For the most part, I feel like it's mostly a handful of teams that can legitimately contend each year. for example, in the middle of last decade, most people thought Cleveland or the warriors would win and MAYBE a couple other teams and they wouldn't be wrong. NBA parity has been notoriously bad.

Miami heat is the living proof that you can't predict who's gonna win the championship just based on pure stats and numbers,determination is a factor,hunger is a factor,adjustments are a factor,stars performance are a factor
All of these things that you consider to be factors are included in numbers just the same. If 'determination', 'stars performances', etc, are factors, then this reflects on the numbers. Or doesn't Jimmy Butler score more points as a result of this 'hunger'?
The real problem with this analysis, which was honestly quite useless because anyone's eye test would have named Celtics and Bucks as top contenders anyway and be just as wrong, is that it knows neither what to look at nor how to look at it.
The first, because the game evolves and what determines success might be changing frequently, and the second, because you can't just blindly trust regular season data in a time when franchises engage in load management, conduct massive trades halfway through the season, etc. I mean, how can you not take into account for example that the current Lakers or Suns are just not the teams that you have stats for? If a team completely changes its make-up halfway through the year, then your data is useless...
When we see the nuggets win it all it will prove the stats are pretty right in the end.

More realistically, you'll probably become a data analyst for a couple years. I've also learned that a math degree (specifically statistics) typically prepares you best for a career in data science. Sure, you might not have a background in coding, but it's not super hard to pick up and you'll set yourself apart with a much better understanding of everything else you do

As a warrior fan last year who watched the series with my good friend who is a celtics fan, I told him from the tip of that series till the end of it that boston was winning it next year. They needed that run in order to be dominant for this years run, building off the knowledge learned from making it last year. Really hope they stay healthy, the ECF should be a hell of a series.
I thought the same after the series. Felt they needed experience in the loss to reach the next level. Hopefully they will be more poised in the tough match-ups this run.

great video! only thing missing in these stats is the major trades... I think the Clippers, Suns, and Lakers all got better at the trade deadline, making them tougher to evaluate on a regular season basis. The Suns are especially hard to evaluate because of the KD injury. The deeper they make it in the playoffs, the more dangerous they'll become as they figure out their chemistry more and more. KD has shown an ability to plug in to almost every system he's played in and I think they might surprise.

@@hepersopon4459 Absolutely not. Unless they can trade find a Klay type of piece (ie: 2 way wing that's an relentless sniper). Mobley also needs to expand his offensive game big time and move to the 5 fulltime. Allen/Mobley isn't a sustainable long term experiment on the offensive end.
I am not a Cavs fan I am a Celtics fan so I can say this without bias. I think the Cavs core is very promising. Mitchell is 26, Garland 23, Mobley 21 and Allen is 24. That is a core of 4 awesome players who compliment each other's skills nicely and are all on the same timeline. Unfortunately trading for Mitchell has cost them some depth that I think will hold them back this year and possibly next year. If they can get a 3+D wing to fill that last starting spot and add a few bench pieces they are 100% a title contender. I also think Mobley will improve each season. If I were their GM I would target guys like Jerami Grant, Sahdiq Bey, Miles Bridges (if he ever plays again), or Kyle Kuzma. Bridges and Kuzma add a vertical threat and are great transition players whereas Grant and Bey are more steady shooters with some iso game. Either route could put this team over the top.
You're right at maintaining their core. If only they have the patience for it which is the problem now in NBA it seems that teams are always in a rush trading their core in exchange of superstars who won't guarantee them an instant chip just like what Dallas did.

I really appreciate what you do season after season, putting math into the game of basketball trying to find the model to predict the unpredictable is a noble crusade.
