  • Why do prayers for unbelieving friends and family members seem so ineffective, and where do I find the hope and stamina to keep on praying for someone else when nothing seems to be happening? The understanding and practice of contending and travail, pictured in the life of the prophet Elijah, gives us both the inspiration and method for praying for the lost.
Tyler Staton is the Lead Pastor of Bridgetown Church in Portland, Oregon, and the National Director of 24-7 Prayer USA. He is passionate about pursuing prayer-communion and conversation with God-while living deeply, poetically, wildly, and freely in the honest and gritty realities of day-to-day life.

Wow, the sincerity of their hearts towards God, and what they've walked in the secret place, shone through like brilliant light. I found it incredibly moving. The oil is just dripping from this conversation. What a blessing. Thank you to all involved.

My daughter was hit by a motorcycle and almost died….. The day before…The Lord called me and my praying women at my church to A shut-in!!! This crying out to God and laboring experience girded me with Moses strength to handle the unknown that still has visible side effects for my daughter since 2014. The medic asked me, “Are you really the mother? He stated I was too much in control! Thank you JT for bringing our Black experience blessing from slavery: you have been
used by God to transfer this experience. It is not just for our culture… It is for all. You have encouraged me to plan for another shut in!!!!!
From my Catholic experiences where I learned discipline to my praying experiences in Accra Ghana where the beat of the drums led believers in a 48 hour call to Physically present prayer ( Prayer-Jama). We are soooo blessed to experience creativity in our walk with the Lord!!!! Wow!!!!!!! This is Real- Talk Y’all!!!!

I’m so moved by this clip and the book praying like monks. I want to pray like this and be consistent in my prayers because I’m in a desperate place. Thank you so so so much for sharing all this and writing such an amazing book on prayer for the world to read and learn from. Thank you.

In the older Christian Mystical tradition, this type of prayer is well known as the prayer of quiet or contemplative prayer, this deep "heart speaks to Heart" non verbal communication of deep suffering be it the suffering of emotion or the suffering of waiting or even sometimes the suffering of overwhelming Love, joy etc.

Thank you for discussing travailing. This kind of praying was foundational in my youth, as I came up in church. I remember forgiveness being a huge part of prayer- forgiving all the wrongs and leaving it at the Cross, believing in a just and righteous Savior that would work all things for the good. And what a wonderful gift to receive more of the presence of the Lord in exchange for forgiving all the wrongs. It took away the hate and kept us in the light to align with how the Lord would carry out justice.

This “travailing” in prayer happens to me - sobbing - so deeply - but I’ve never been taught this from anyone - it frequently happens when praying for lost loved ones, for friends who have serious health issues.

It was good to hear this. I often feel like a fish out of water, wondering where others are that feel and experience this. Please pray I will lean into this and spread the same to others around within our church.

This is wonderful! Young men, I must say, after delivering 4 babies without an epidural, ever! We do not forget the PAIN but do keep having babies in spite of what we know we'll face again after baby #1. Does this concept apply to anyone in comparison to how we go through pain of life and stick with God? I will but want to hear thoughts.

Just listened to Tyler on another podcast, they were talking about using prayer to reach God’s rest and having prayer come from that rest. Then someone said we still need to labor in prayer, I wrote myself a note like labor/giving birth can’t do it on my own. We can’t will ourselves to give birth, the labor comes from a place beyond our will.
