  • I compare a 2021 Tesla Model 3 dual motor long-range to a 2019 with the same trim. I find 25 changes, most of which are improvements, and one body flaw that seems to be occurring on all new 2021 Model 3's.
    This video is powered by Qmerit, North America’s leading provider of installation services for EV charging, home energy storage, and other electrification technologies.
    See how Qmerit is making the energy transition easy for home and business owners: qmerit.com/ev/charge/
    *Edit: #21 is the heated steering wheel. After talking with a few Model 3 owners, I believe I got that one wrong. I'm replacing it with a change that I missed: For 2021 the TPS sensors are now BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy), previous model years are rf. You can only get them from Tesla and cost $75 ea.
    The 25 changes:
    @1:32 #1 New Aero Wheels & Cover
    @2:50 #2 Chrome Delete
    @3:15 #3 Smaller Frunk
    @3:35 #4 Hood Easier To Close
    @4:12 #5 Double Pane Glass On Front Windows

    @5:53 #7 Automatic Opening & Closing Trunk
    @6:30 Trunk Alignment Issue

    @8:02 #9 Trunk Opens 3” Less Than Before
    @8:46 #10 Center Console Redesign
    @9:13 #11 Wireless Charging Pads
    @9:21 #12 Accent Stitching On Console Trim
    @9:38 #13 Armrest Tray No Longer Included
    @9:56 #14 USB-C Ports Replace USB-A In Center Console
    @10:34 #15 Formatted USB Drive Included & Mounted In Glove Box
    @11:27 #16 USB-C Ports replace USB-A In Rear Seating area
    @11:35 #17 Metal Scroll Wheel On Steering Wheel
    @11:59 #18 Graphite Colored Paint Used On Power Seat Controls
    @12:12 #19 Magnetic Sun Visor Clips
    @12:32 #20 New Graphic On Door Release Buttons
    @12:56 New Black Door Sills (Included in Chrome Delete Change)
    @13:12 #21 Heated Steering Wheel (*Edit: I think I'm wrong on this one!)
    @13:54 #22 Heat Pump System
    @15:25 #23 Improved Battery Cells / More Capacity
    @16:25 #24 Increased Range
    @17:21 #25 Improved Efficiency

    The things that really make a difference to me:
    1. Automatic rear closing trunk

      You got it all wrong. The order from most important to least is:
      1. Battery range improvement
      2. Heat pump
      3. Power trunk

    That trunk panel gap is unbelievable it’s the worst I’ve seen on a Model 3 and more like a crevice! Don’t think I would have accepted the car if it was me. The components inside are going to be weathered so quickly, hope it gets fixed for you in the next few weeks.

    • @manueldavid7369

      Tesla used to focus on safety and function much more than obtical things, but even optical things are improving extremely fast, visible every year. I've had my trunk adjusted right a week after receiving the 2021 Model. It was done free of charge and looks perfect now. It was done in Winterthur Tesla Service Switzerland. I was given another 2021 Model 3 whilst it was in service and it was done in just an afternoon. I think as well that it has to do with the manufacturing process not being 100% adjusted to the power opening yet. As far as I know Tesla, such things are always done free of charge if booking a service on the app and explaining the problem in detail with photographs on the app. I therefore am 100% sure they will adjust manufacturing very quickly.

    Best comprehensive overview of all the changes I've seen. Thankfully I don't have FOMO after watching your video. I have a 4/19 build LR RWD, among the last built before it went off menu. Hopefully my car can become a Robotaxi in a few years. I'm looking forward to a Y or 3 out of Austin with single castings and 4680's. I spent a lot of time working out the kinks on my 3 so I hate to think of going through it all again. I was disappointed to hear the noise was not any better. I've taken all my door panels off and adjusted the windows to where the wind noise is pretty well minimized. I've noticed road noise is dependent on the road surface and the 3 is highly susceptible to cross winds for increased wind noise. Heated steering wheel is nice in our other cars, but don't miss it as much as I thought I would in the Tesla.

    Yes, I’m having the seal problems on both sides of my 2021 Model 3. The wind noise is not just bad for an EV, it’s bad for anything. I certainly didn’t have that problem on any of my previously non-Tesla cars. In general, I love the car though, but there are still some of these cosmetic fit and finish issues they need to address. Another recent change. The car stores panic videos on onboard memory, so it remains unclear if stealing the USB drive would even hide the intrusion.

Now if only the headliner could be dark. So far I will stick with my plans to get a less efficient Mach-E GT. If the YP gets gets a display in front of the steering wheel and dark headliner before then, I may consider it.

    Measuring the trunk opening from the ground doesn't provide an accurate measurement difference. You'd have to measure from the bottom of the trunk opening to the top. Using the ground takes into account the vehicle stance which may be different on a model 3 with 19" low-profile tires and, potentially, older suspension that's sitting lower.

Truly like the style of your reviews, very honest and show it as it is .. like that about you allot! .. watching this video really made me feel a bit better about Tesla knowing they have really improved the model 3 over the older one I got ..
    Tom, if you can get 323 miles of range out of the 353 EPA numbers going avg. 70 mph.. that would truly restore my confidence in Tesla EPA numbers .. with my previous model X and current model 3 I just don’t get close to the amazing EPA numbers that I truly want to experience ..

    Hi Tom really nicely done, but I wonder are these LG cells or Panasonic, Bjron Nylan noticed the Model 3 AWD in Europe was using LG cells while only the Performance had the Pana cells. Noticeably different in state of charge handling especially at lower charge levels (LG seemed to handle cold weather, Panasonic seems to baby the cells but maybe the BMS will be updated when Tesla become more confident in the new Panasonic cells). Look forward to some cold weather range reviews!

    The double glass doesn't make a difference to the cabin noise in the tests I've seen but it does make a noticable difference with heat insulation. Regarding wind noise, you might need to recalibrate your windows. Check the manual on how to do it, I had the same issue when I got my M3LR a few weeks back. And a Tesla SC should be able to fix the trunk gap, I've seen it on other new M3's but I don't have it on mine.

    #22 Worth noting: The heat pump in Model 3 is implemented a little bit differently than in the competition. It does not leech heat from the environment directly, but from the battery (through the coolant). That means you’re cooling your battery by heating up your cabin. Under normal driving conditions, that is fine, as the battery will almost always be warmer than the environment, but when the car is still cold, you’re cooling your battery even further, reducing performance until it warms up. Since the battery is warmed up by heating up the motor stators (resistive heating), that means that when it’s very cold, or the car wasn’t preheated, you’re essentially heating the cabin with resistive heating.
