This is such a great video. Getting a chance to see and hear how a master gathers information about the fish/water, processes that information into a plan of attack, and then executes is a treat. It also teaches that you can approach the water with a plan (fish close to bank), but then be flexible to adapt to conditions makes it even better. And that Mr. Galloup misses fish just like me (and doesn't edit out the misses) makes it all the more human and relatable. What a gift of a video!
Truth. I caught my first ten or 200 fish with a beat down aluminum rod and vintage reel Not sure why I ever bought shiny new graphite high molecular Superman krypton ultra fast doo-hickey rods. I need to go find some older “tech” again and be more pure. Or humble. Or something
One of the best videos in recent memory. We all have days the fish beat us - the fact that Kelly Galloup doesn't edit out the misses (like 99% of the phony experts do) tells me all I need to know about him - I've been a fan of his, And I love the rod and reel set up - talk about old school. This video when contrasted to most others is a shining light. Great shots of actual trout feeding. I basically no longer enjoy dry fly videos because it's usually an amateur that knows less than i knew 20 years ago- they barely ever film "the take"......and then you're forced to watch some idiot with a bend in his rod fight a fish for 10 minutes while he hoots and hollers Thank you Mr. Galloup - you made my day with this video. A True legend !
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. It shows real fly fishing!! I get tired of watching guys catching one right after another (mostly through creative editing) because it doesn't help us figure out what to do when reality strikes. Please keep doing what you are doing. I, for one, greatly appreciate it. As a 70 year old, life long fly fisher, there is still plenty for me to learn.
Fenwick and Pflueger! Doesn't get more old school than that. That's why I love watching this guy's videos. My Fenwick is a pack rod from the early 60s.
Best video of 2024 so far. How it's 95% of the time while on the river. Kelly is one of a kind and doesn't hold back!! Was awesome to meet him in person at the Grand opening last summer in Ennis.
One of the best fly fishing videos ever...for contemplative sorts. Having fished the Madison for 35 years I will attest that a day like this is what aspiration is all about. If one thinks that actually catching and landing a quantity of fish is what success or failure is measured by, one would be missing the point.
This was a real joy to watch! Anyone who has fly fished for any length of time has experienced the same kind of day, and the only thing you can do is have a good chuckle about it. I learn more from a day like that then if you caught every fish you through to. Really fun to watch!
One of best videos ever. Kelly is world class fisherman who shares great knowledge, his love of fishing and lets you know it is not just about catching but we all need to enjoy the time with a rod in your hand and the process. Thanks for another fantastic video.
Great video. This is the kind of stuff I would recommend to new fly anglers, who still need to learn how fish feed and behave, what they eat in different conditions, and the struggles that even experienced anglers have when out on the water, and most importantly the reminder that fishing isn't always about putting as many fish in the net but rather an appreciation for time out in nature. Winter is an incredibly humbling time to fish, and it teaches you a lot, just because it's cold and the banks are bare, doesn't mean the river isn't full of life.
Kelly, I have watched I think all your videos, fishing or tying. For fishing, I think this one has been the most enjoyable. Your enthusiasm for the sport of Flyfishing, appreciation for the trout we love, always comes through. But in this video, your passion for the purest form of Flyfishing for trout really came through. Really well done man. Thank you for all you do. Oh, and I have my original Phlueger reel I started with on the Bois Brule and I have the same Patagonia vest.
Such a relatable video. Excellent explanation of everything as always. PLEASE more dry fly videos in the future. Nothing like the feel of slower vintage glass to sling a dry fly.
Please, keep these videos going. I don't care so much about a video showing a bunch a fish being caught. I'm learning from your commentary, observations and tactics. I've been frustrated many times in similar conditions. Thank you, Kelly.
A man after my own heart, glass and a Medalist reel. It worked for a long time, ain't no reason it won't work now. Been there, done that, Kelly. I was on the Current River in Missouri about 40 years ago. There were fish stacked up like cord wood in this big bend of the river and I couldn't get one to eat anything. I even literally konked a couple of them on the head with a lure and they simply would not bite. I enjoyed the video. Ya know what they say, a bad day fishing is still better than the best day at work. Keep the good stuff coming.
Not sure I’ve seen another show a show featuring failure. Fished a couple of weeks ago and didn’t have a single take. Hadn’t happen in a very long time so this made me feel so much better. Binge watched them all and loved the actual reality of it. Thank you!!
LOVED this video. The frustration is def still real, esp. when you get rejected, but that downstream hookset haunts me, esp. when I'm fishing the Ranch! Awesome vid!
Was up and couldn’t sleep reading some Dave Whitlock. Then I opened up TH-cam and what did I find. Oh my gosh, what a beautiful place. Glad I got to visit and I enjoy watching and learning from you. Your content is always interesting real fishing. As always I could watch for hours 👍
Awesome video, just goes to show that even the greatest anglers can struggle against nature, and shows just how fun sight casting dry flies can be as well!
Hell yeah man! Love it. Tell Jonny, the guy that called today and asked about "how to get streamers to run hooks up like a belly bumper", got his first trout on his own fly after him and I chatted on the phone. Nice little wild Brown. Thanks to you, and probably Jonny too. You guys are a bunch of badasses. Just bought the vise from you guys. Study all the videos. Hooked for life now. Thanks again 🤘🏼🤪🤘🏼
Kelly man. Thank you. All these other fishing videos are little snippets of trout after trout. Not what really happens evverytime. This is real. I love this too. I understand every feeling you were having on this river man. I'm from Helena Mt. N even have history in the Mason, Holt, Lansing MI area from summers at my fathers. Its cool wayching you work. One of my all time favorites for some reason. Lol. Been following you for a long time. Hope to meet u in your new shop someday. Stay warm buddy. Im glad i seen this today. Kinda humbles a guy knowing even our heros have tough days on the river n not everyday it is rainbows n unicorns 😂.
Great views and place to fish. Quake lake is a perfect place to be humbled. Sparsely tied spinner or griffin gnat have worked in the past to get a fish bite. Thanks again for bring us a long for a good day of fishing.
Great video. We've fished that very spot seeing essentially the same fish and with the same results -- a beautifully frustrating experience. And like others mentioned, its compelling to see one of the greats deal with same issues as us enthusiasts. Finally, really appreciate that you don't push that money can buy you fly fishing expertise.
Great information and great video. It also shows that you can have the perfect plan but the fish can veto it. While I would never wish for people to not catch fish, I do appreciate the honesty when someone I consider a master in their field shows that not every trip to the river is a 20 fish day. I can tend to think that a thorough skunking is something that only happens to me , but only occasionally ; )
This was very familiar. Romanticize about fishing my favorite rod (that is too soft set a hook with), plan on stalking and keeping it close. Wade to the middle and haul reach cast a soft rod across two currents to try for the big one, only to have eat it and then I can’t set the hook due to the above mentioned predicament. Great day of fishing for a guy that doesn’t need to catch another 15” trout his whole life to be more or less satisfied with a nice day on the water. Love your videos ! Thanks
Kelly I liked this insightful video no matter you did not catch, it was an honest experience on the river those days and sometimes like life you learn more from those days that less succesful.
I really enjoyed the dry fly video!!! Great work with the camera!!! Keep them coming!!! I actually have a Fenwick given to me from my father in law!!! Casts a great line
More videos like this one would be great. Love the Dry fly action. I’ve had many a day like the one you just had in the Yosemite Valley when it was open in the winter. “Days gone by”
Think you should do more dry fly vids showing off the rivers around your area and the scenery! loved watching you explaining technique but the scenery is stunning also your s natural story teller!! Fantastic
Fun to watch . I like to say that some days you think about selling all your gear ; the next time out is more su cessful and you think you should write a book ! Love your take on all aspects ts of the sport . Thanks for sharing .

Great video guys!! Looks amazing. I love that spot. Great series!!
Another great video. Too many TH-camrs only show the highlights, without explanation or realism. This is what it's like sometimes, and anyone who fishes with seriousness knows it (except, maybe, briggs13a, who sounds more like a bad politician than a trout fisherman). Great photography, illuminating commentary, beautiful scenery... thanks for taking us along.
Great video. I have a similar Fenwick woodstream and Pflueger 1494 setup that I purchased In Idaho Falls back in 79. Still use it, although I have other newer rods and reels I still like to fish with the fenwick. Good info and production.
I think changing flies, lengthening the leader, sizing down, and trying to employ a reach cast are what I would have systematically attempted in this situation. So frustrating! What a backdrop though, and the fish were coming up, what more can you ask for? Thanks for the tips!
I had the same thing happen to me a couple weeks ago. Little fish on a BWO hatch that didn’t last long. It’s still great when it’s a nice day and you’re on the river.
Outstanding, I love dry fly and I would have loved to be there, even if they kick my ass 😅. Maybe you did not have enough line speed to hook properly, as you said that rod is only good for short cast. Please do a second part! Get revenge 😊
I've never fished that spot when the water was low enough to be able to wade out. Those fish get a lot of pressure, so that you got so many eats is cool.
I got the same rod, and it is real, too. It's nice to see a legend have one of those. The only fish you are going to get is the one you buy at the fishmonger. I had and will continue to have such days. Oh, some of my fishless days were my best days on the stream. I would bet a # 22 Griffiths Gnat would have picked up a fish or two for you under those conditions. It just about always will get me at least one fish when I try everything else.
This is such a great video. Getting a chance to see and hear how a master gathers information about the fish/water, processes that information into a plan of attack, and then executes is a treat. And that Mr. Galloup misses fish just like me (and doesn't edit out the misses) makes it all the more human and relatable. What a gift of a video!
Now that was REAL fishing!! So enjoyable and relatable. Fly fishing is not just unhooking fish. Love the old school equipment, too. Great video.
Truth. I caught my first ten or 200 fish with a beat down aluminum rod and vintage reel
Not sure why I ever bought shiny new graphite high molecular Superman krypton ultra fast doo-hickey rods. I need to go find some older “tech” again and be more pure. Or humble. Or something
The moment he’s watching the pair moving around. True angler. More than content; even joyful to just watch some fish.
One of the best videos in recent memory. I absolutely loved it when Kelly flat out states that the dry fly is where it's at! The ultimate deal indeed!
LOVED this. Awesome stuff. Could listen to Kelly all day.
This was awesome. Please do more like this where you just go fishing and deal with the challenges live like so many of us can relate to. Thank you.
Perfect remedy for the coldest day of winter . . . So far. Keep em coming. Thanks!
The fact you posted this (honorable) skunking says a lot about you. Got a new fan, cheers.
That rod and reel combo was the gold standard. Everyone in the 70s had that outfit. I still have mine
“I have no idea of what’s going on.” Spoken by a living legend in the fly fishing world. This is what makes Kelly so relatable. Great video.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. It shows real fly fishing!! Drinking my morning coffee and watching this....a morning can't start better! Thank you!!

Your enthusiasm was contagious. You’re the type of person one hopes to meet on the water. Thanks for sharing your love for the sport.
Mega Thx Kelly for showing folks that the experience out there fishing is just as important and enjoyable whether you catch anything or not
Hey Kelly!!!
Class act, you always make us remember that we do this for fun.
Kindest regards from South Africa
Great video. Fantastic to see a master be flexible and do everything right, but still have a challenging time out--great show! Please keep them coming!
Love it. I never get tired of listening to Kelly talk
This is amazing. It's fun to see such a legend go through all the same mid-hatch struggles as the rest of us. Makes him even more of a legend!
Better than watching a video of people, just playing fish. All the insights and observations of a wise angler.

Today, I feel like a great fisherman. I've had so many days like this. Thanks for your video.
Looks like most of my days on the water! Thanks for sharing that. Not every “expert” is willing to show defeat let alone laugh about it.
This is great....make you feel everyone's human. Enjoyed being with you.
Love the videos Kelly, talk all you want. I enjoy the knowledge you share
Please, keep these videos going. I don't care so much about a video showing a bunch a fish being caught. I'm learning from your commentary, observations and tactics. I've been frustrated many times in similar conditions. Thank you, Kelly.
My favorite video of the series. Learned so much and it was great to see Kelly's approach. Loved it!!!
Absolutely excellent video!! This is real surface fishing reality, thanks!!
That is the best C&R film I have watched in a long time - loved it Thanks
Need to see you more on the dry fly rod, Kelly thanks a lot!

Kelly is a no bullshit dude. It's awesome. Always learn a lot in a short period of time.
Thanks! I needed that…Brings back lots of memories on that river in winter.
Awesome video, just goes to show that even the greatest anglers can struggle against nature, and shows just how fun sight casting dry flies can be as well!
My favorite so far! The stoke despite the frustration is what fishing is all about. Also love fishing that spot.
Really fun to get to go along with you. Enjoyed the best thing about dry fly fishing, stalking and figuring it out…Thanks for the ride.👍
I am so happy this video went this way. I feel terrible every time I get skunked and its so great to see it happens to the best too.
Sometimes they just won't take what you give them. Beautiful scenery, excellent video. Always enjoy your content.
Hell yeah man! Love it. New to fly fishing, and listening to your knowledge and all the different flys is so overwhelming for me 😂
Thanks for the explanation of why, how and when. Keep up the great work!
Great views and place to fish. Quake lake is a perfect place to be humbled. Sparsely tied spinner or griffin gnat have worked in the past to get a fish bite. Thanks again for bring us a long for a good day of fishing.
Great stuff Kelly. Sometimes the beatings can be the best days and the ones we remember.
humbling isn't it sometimes...😂.. good to see it can still happen to an old-timer too... great vid.. awesome film work..

Thanks for taking the time to do these videos. Can't wait to get back out there to the Slide Inn.
My favorite fishing video this year, got so excited watching! Glass rod, Baetis, it’s ok you didn’t land them. So jealous!
Kelly I liked this insightful video no matter you did not catch, it was an honest experience on the river those days and sometimes like life you learn more from those days that less succesful.

One of my favorite places to fish small dries with glass as well. I love early spring when there is a few feet of snow still.
Great video. I have a similar Fenwick woodstream and Pflueger 1494 setup that I purchased In Idaho Falls back in 79. Still use it, although I have other newer rods and reels I still like to fish with the fenwick. Good info and production.
one of the best videos I've seen very informative
Great video, made my day. Thanks for posting................. ! ! ! ! !
I hate to admit it....but it makes me feel better to see Kelly Galloup get skunked! Great vid, as always.
Great video. The explanation thru 20 minutes is cool
Great video. More instructional than anything filmed in a studio
That was the best no fish caught video i ever seen 'good job' Kelly
thanks as always. lessons to grow by.
I think changing flies, lengthening the leader, sizing down, and trying to employ a reach cast are what I would have systematically attempted in this situation. So frustrating! What a backdrop though, and the fish were coming up, what more can you ask for? Thanks for the tips!
Loving the new series
So heartening to see him miss fish just like the rest of us. 😁 #20 Mole fly woulda been your ticket, Kelly 😊
I had the same thing happen to me a couple weeks ago. Little fish on a BWO hatch that didn’t last long. It’s still great when it’s a nice day and you’re on the river.
Ouch. I thought only I get beat up like that. Great video!
Would love to see ya try and pick apart the Harriman ranch this summer! Cheers!
Awesome vid, best one yet. I would like to see you bring a $1,000 rod vs old school to see a comparison. And also some size #20 next time lol
He did a vid on $1,000 rods.
Well that answers my questions about whether they get any easier to catch when the pressure’s off.
sweet video, great camera work
In this episode
Trout 1 - and Kelley 0 😂
Love it. Look forward to the next one 🍻🍻
Great video. Plus, I now feel much better about myself as an angler...
“Ate it on the first cast” Yep. Fun video.
Outstanding, I love dry fly and I would have loved to be there, even if they kick my ass 😅. Maybe you did not have enough line speed to hook properly, as you said that rod is only good for short cast. Please do a second part! Get revenge 😊
Love fishing vintage fenwick!!!!
“I have no idea what’s happening”. Yep. I love that shit.
I've never fished that spot when the water was low enough to be able to wade out. Those fish get a lot of pressure, so that you got so many eats is cool.
just wonderful.
It’s like watching myself fish - so many eats, just sleeping and set it toooo late
Kelly must have been using that new fly; the in-n-out bugger!
Hopefully he reads this for next time😂
what is length of that glass rod? ...and what is weight class?
Wow. I believe I have almost the exact same rod/reel that my Dad gave me a few weeks ago!
