  • Working with our friends at QS Motor and Fardrive controller, we are introduce this hub motor kit to convert a Kawasaki KX65 to electric. After minor modifications to the swingarm (cutting slots at the end of the swingarm, and cut off the chain slider mount), this kit would bolt on directly to it, providing a great basis for an electric KX65 conversion. The kit also contains a rear brake caliper mounting bracket, making it convenient to set up a rear brake system.
    With some additional components (battery pack, wiring, tires, rear brake caliper etc.), the result of the project is a great play bike / mini motard / moped. It's a lot of fun and very versatile.

    Can you do a more in depth video about the Fardriver controller and how it performs as there's not really much out there at the moment? I'm mainly wondering what the startup torque is like...

    Around 1:11 mark I can see that the rear wheel jumps a lot even on small bumps and at low speeds. I'm guessing it caused by the weight of the rear wheel? Or is it due to a busted/poorly adjusted shock?

    • @leitian7328
      @leitian7328  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The shock can use some fine tuning -- also, the cracks on the pavement are kinda significant. A third factor, the unsprung weight of the hub motor does make it a little worse on bumps like that.

    • @leitian7328
      @leitian7328  ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not familiar with KTM 65. But I think in general the stock forks, with spring replaced, and some work to increase dampening, would work just fine

  • @skywalker859
    @skywalker859 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What kind of rear shock are you using? Stock front forks? And where did you find that seat? Thanks 🙏

    • @leitian7328
      @leitian7328  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, the shock is a FZ-09 shock. With a little modification it fits, and works pretty well. For the forks, the dampen rods were modified -- the big holes were sealed up, leaving only the smaller holes, to increase damping; also 15w fork oil was used. I didn’t change the fork springs, they are still pretty soft -- but it’s fine for playing around.

    • @leitian7328

      The seat is from Ebay, you can search “kx65 tall seat” and find some good options

    Lei Tian, thank you for making this video I am very interested in using some of your electrify items you used in your kx65 conversion.I want to change an older 150CC Vespa ET4 to be electric. Do you have any ideas for me as far as hub motor and battery makeup? I'm looking for a few things... the stock rear tire is 10 but may be upgraded to 11-12 inches. the battery capacity needs to get me 60 to 80 miles (street riding mostly 35-45mph with a top speed of somewhere around 60-65 MPH... I believe the Vespa is the best choice certainly because of the volume of storage located on the vespa for batteries etc. Thank you for any ideas you may have. -Mike

      @leitian7328  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, if you want to convert a specific vehicle, please note that swingarm structure varies a lot in different vehicles. The point of the kit I used, is to (almost) directly drop in to the swingarm of that specific bike. So by targeting a Vespa which I do not know of an existing kit out there, you are on your own to make things fit --- it's quite a bit of work, but of course anything is doable with custom fabrication work

    There are two main problem with hub motors:
    1. They cause heavy unsprung weight
    2. They're slow
    If these two problems don't exist (at least #1) it will be interesting to build 2 wheel drive dirt bike

    • @leitian7328
      @leitian7328  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are not wrong! I don't think hub motor in dirt will ever work, rims get bent way too easily with the unsprung weight.

    • @leitian7328

      Unfortunately, the volumes would be too low for QS to make a kit for a specific dirt bike. The only reason this kit existed, was my buddy and me paying QS some money, and working with our friends there, to make this custom batch. It was a money losing proposition but it was fun anyways haha.

    • @leitian7328
      @leitian7328  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Leonn_. well the general guidelines on hub motor vs mid drive all apply. Advantages: quieter without chain noise; smoother without chain jerks; mechanically simpler; cheaper to build; more room in the middle of the bike for the battery. Disadvantages: huge unsprung weight; can’t use stock rear brakes; can’t do gearing modifications; kinda inconvenient to change the rear tire.

      @leitian7328  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Ahmad Ghani It depends on many factors. Three major ones are: how big the battery is, how long the straights are, and how much power you allow the motor to consume. The build shown here, with a small pack (1kWh), and the track being super demanding with a long straightway, it only last 1 session if you allow 10hp; 4 to 5 sessions if at "low" setting at 3hp. It takes anywhere between 1 to 4 hours to charge it up, depends on the charger size / setting and whether the battery is cool to accept high charge current. It is regular AC charger.
