This episode is exactly what I needed to know when I begin building my post frame house in the next 6 months. I am using a concrete wall basement on two sides, then a two-story post on the north and east walls. This method allows me to put those floor joists exactly at the correct height from front to back. I'm sure you must feel very proud (powerful) when you look back at what you have and can create-it's really amazing what humans can accomplish.
What I keep thinking about is: if imperfect humans can be able to reach such great heights in terms of creativity and intellectual ability, what if we actually were perfect, what would we then fail to accomplish (taking into consideration all modern day technological advancements, i.e, the tools at your disposal that enable you to be precise and work efficiently)

This building is awesome! The cell foam insulation is costly but will save money in the long run. Not to mention the comfort. 👍👍
Ive always felt like board insulation with canned foam and flashing tape is a better solution per dollar, but spray foam is always guaranteed to give insane r-value.

Im a carpenter and work for a builder ai told him what you do with the bottom plates and he laughed and said he would never do or trust that and I agree. We have never had an issue with treated wood bottom plates and have been building for 25+ years on the coast of lake michigan.

Kyle, in the future when ordering your LVL’s order LVL’s used for bottom cord trusses. They are manufactured to 1-1/2” to match dimensional. Safe some time.

Great content as I plan to get my shop built this spring with a second story and these tricks will come in handy.
Kyle take it from a older Electrician use knee pads on the old concrete. When your older you'll be feeling it. Just a suggestion. by the way your videos are great . I would like to see some of the electrical and plumbing work that's done in your buildings
I always throw them on when doing a home or auto repair
I’m 31 and my dad has taught me construction for 15 years and my dad told me everyday “wear knee pads” and now I wish I would have listened. My knees get sore all the time sometimes just from sitting in the car for 45 minutes. Flooring jobs kill me and I’m perfectly healthy, I have no diseases or physical ailments and my knees are just telling me already to slow down and protect them.
I'm 65, almost 66, and I finally started using knee pads last year; a bit late, I know, but I really haven't had any problems with my knees, for the most part. They sure do make a difference, and I should have used them, years ago! lol
I agree. Should have used them years ago, so uncomfortable and rashes sweating under them... Better than knee problems now.
Yea old carpenter / Builder here with Double knee replacement. I’m surprised to see the young guys with hearing protection we never did and should have. But jumping down just off of trucks short scaffolds , carry heavy stuff will ruin your knees by 50 then you pretty much have to hobble around until your 65 to afford keen replacement surgery.

Thank you so much for this video! I have been trying to learn more about framing in a Post Frame structure. I am a timber frame designer and I see a lot of hybrid timber frame and stick frame designs. I would like to build a hybrid timber/post frame myself.
I am a structural engineer, and I will always choose a bearing connection over relying on shear capacity of fasteners if possible. Every day. All year.
When using the router against a straight edge use the round side .. if you twist the flat side the cut will be wavy. .. the round edge is the same if you twist a little.

Screw an ear (just a scrap of plywood the same width as the LVL) on the top edge of LVL that you haven't attached to the structure yet. Set the ear on top of the attached LVL now you only need to lift and hold one end of the LVL, then Greg could just be making sure the eared LVL doesn't slip off the attached LVL. You could in a pinch do this by yourself if in conjunction with the ear technique you put a standout at another attachment point (just a 16d nail for the LVL to rest on) now your hands free and the weights off the LVL and you can use your screw gun and, retrieve screw at your leisure.

3:40 since you have an inch to the inside here, would hanger brackets be better than toenailing? Great series!
The strength in a beam is the height^3 so removing a little thickness has a small effect on the bending strength. Ixx
bending modulus = width*height^3/12 for a rectangle cross-section. Better not to count on shear only for fasteners good idea to block it for good measure.

I look at your videos as synonymous with sitcoms and the average length of sitcoms is ~22 minutes. What will be the finish clear height of the first floor with flooring and drywall installed?

In theory, yes it will transfer the load to the floor.... practically, at least where I'm at, things dry out during and after construction. Meaning all of your horizontal members will likely shrink to the point where they only carry themselves, and whatever is directly attached to them. Which is probably also fine, as long as that LVL and the block directly underneath are tied in to those posts well and good. Otherwise you'd need a king stud underneath to carry it, to make sure you had full transfer. That is the benefit of regular platform framing - not a whole lot of vertical shrinkage of any visible significance, same as your posts, but as soon as you throw members on the flat or on edge in the mix, it's a different story. In the platform framing, everything just settles, tied to a post, they pull apart, to where they're attached. And there's nothing wrong with that either, just so long as one keeps it in mind.

You put blocking in under the lvl, which blocked off an electrical chase. The exact advantage you showed in the beginning. I would have reached out to an engineer and found out how many GRKs and what pattern to use to secure it if I were you.

Using a construction adhesive like PL Premium Max on those LVL joints would mean you could confidently skip the blocking to save time/materials. Depending on fit, each one of those full width joints would realistically gain over 50,000 pounds of compression sheer force just from the PL Max, based on it's ASTM rating.

A tip from an amateur woodworker. Never use the flat side of the router against a stop. If it twists while routing, the bit will move off the line. If you cut against the circular part, if it twists, the bit will still be in a straight line.
