I'm from a Land Down Under, so have no clue about "FAMOUS 56". I'm a latecomer to YCDTI, and VERY gradually working my way through the clips '66 to '69. Loving some of the characters I'm discovering: John Pollard (my 17 YO granddaughter calls him Mr. Smoothex, or "The Dapper Doctor John Pollard")🤩 Frank Vanderpuil (RIP)🤩 Dancer Don, 🤩Famous,🤩 the Wagonner sisters Peggy & Donna🤩😍, Rob Molinelli, 🤩Dave Cortez, 🤩Kathy McInerny😍. I went on the show in 1968 and 1969. I will never forget the great time I had. They taped four shows on Sunday. The dance floor was kind of small but it was easy to dance on their set. My friend Mark and I lived in Fullerton, CA. and took the train into LA and then a bus to the studio. The ABC studio was on Prospect Ave back then. They had the Iron Butterfly on one show and Tim Buckley, and Mary Lee Rush to name a few acts.

      @YCDTI  6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Hi William Armijo! It’s always cool talking with people who were actually there. I have the “Iron Butterfly” episode and I found you on it answering the “question of the day”. I think your friend Mark (Kominsky or something like that) went right before you and then you answered. I wonder if you remember the question, as it was one of the most interesting questions I’ve seen, and very relevant today? Maybe I can post that if you’re interested. Anyways, thanks for stopping by!

      While not the lighting speed he could have done more (i.e interracial dance couples etc.)Dick Clark said in 1 of his final TV interviews to the Larry King show on CNN(I think 2007-'08 someone can confirm the date)that he *gradually* brought on Black dancers/studio member in the later years of it's Philly based tapings and later by the early '70's Hispanic teen dancers. This was done to the show without a dramatic change and causing an outrage among mainly the Southern Viewers. Mr. Clark said that by the time AB had relocated it's tapings/studios to LA the change of adding more dancers of color had been complete.

    I might get some flack for this, but I grew to prefer this show to Soul Train as a kid; for many black kids of this period (the 1970's in my case) AB was the only show that showcased Top 40 music (this was the height of the "crossover" period, after all). Besides, due to ST's need to showcase the barely broad gamut of R&B, by the early 1980's the show began to appeal to parents than to kids--anyone else ever notice the sheer number of borderline middle-age dancers still appearing on that show?

      My older sister who was born as the last of the so called baby boomer era in 1961 and as a teen in the '70's and early 80's she loved both shows. She said the same thing that Ms. Devore said ST for dancing and AB for the variety of music i.e Rock/Pop, Soul and even sometimes Country.
      Off topic as i was not born until 1972 lol. I thought almost all TV shows in America by 1967 was in color. Why is this still in Black & White?

He always seemed a little more sophisticated than the other young guys, & sometimes, he would be by himself & he would ask a young lady from the crowd to dance. I just wondered what EVER happened to him, as well as ALL these bright, lovely young ladies & men. "Those were the days, my friends, we thought they'ed NEVER end".

    Famous and June were a terrific pair. Before they were a couple he used to dance with Lori Montgomery. Then in 1966 a Bandstand edict came down that everyone had to come with a partner and no mixed race couples were allowed. Everyone was pissed that Famous and Lori had to be broken up!

    • @americangiant1003
      @americangiant1003 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Interesting info Peggy about that show. I strongly disagree with the concept of that suspected edict of no interracial dance couple allowed. With that said, I understand why Dick Clark had that unwritten rule though to appease some viewers especially in the South. This edict being done to appease a few Viewers who were just then barely accepting Black Dance Couples/Audience Members in 1967 on National TV in America. Especially since the so called Jim Crow era had only ended about 4 years earlier. Plus I am sure the phones would have blown up if AB allowed Black/Latinos to have White Dance Partners then. Shows despite the problems we still have in 2018, how far we progressed on race in the USA.
      And a question for those who know the answer? Pardon me if I am wrong guys but i only remember watching AB in the last few years of it's amazing run in the mid/late '80's but I swear I saw Mixed couple i.e White Lady and a Black Guy and a Latina Woman/Young White Man as Dancers. Maybe someone here on TH-cam can confirm if Dick Clark and the powers at ABC ended that edict by the time this show wrapped up by around I think 1988-'89?
