1:54 “Trunk or treats” are actually a “safe trick or treating” thing here (exurban USA) where members of a local community (usually a church, but could be anything) get together in their parking lot, invite local families, and hand out candy to kids. It’s almost like a tailgate party, but for trick or treating. They’re pretty benign, and everyone is usually friendly

Fun fact: A common Dutch translation for Trick or Treat is ‘Snoep of Je leven’ which in English means ‘Candy or Your life’ which I think fits the Halloween spirit a lot more.

I'm from a poor neighborhood and we had this one house we avoided because they gave out their religious stuff instead of candy and were kinda mean. One year, they seemed to realize the neighborhood kids wouldn't come to them anymore, so they started walking up to trick or treaters passing by and stopping them to *make* them take their pamphlets. It got so bad that most people stopped trick or treating here and started going to the rich neighborhood, where there was one house that gave out full king sized candy bars.

The angel harp lady reminds me of a neighbor I had in Louisiana. She was a professional orchestral harpist and every year, she'd sit out in her front yard, also dressed as an angel, and play this golden, jewel-detailed harp that was bigger than her. So, I live in Switzerland, so Halloween isn’t very common, but still generally celebrated. We were Trick-Or-Treating and got to an older couples house who were seemingly confused about the whole thing, forcing us to sing Christmas Carols in order to recieve our treat. Our reward? This story of mine belongs to my brother.
Here in Australia, Halloween is a relatively new thing and only a handful of people do it, a few decorated houses here and there, maybe a few people showing up at your door for trick or treating of course if they don’t just skip your house entirely. So a few years ago my brother went out trick or treating with his friends. They went down to a big block of houses that we usually trick or treat at because they have the most houses doing Halloween in our area. My brothers friends forgot about our little rule about ‘only going to decorated houses’ because, yeah, not many do Halloween here. So they decided to go to a few non decorated houses. All went well, most of the houses knew what Halloween was so they gave my brother and friends their candy, except one house. This next house, the person had NO IDEA what Halloween was and probably thought he was getting robbed by a bunch of 13 year olds, so he gave them each some money. My brother and his friends gave back the money and explained what Halloween was, so the man gave them bags of chips instead, and they just left without a word, chips in bag.

So my grandpa's birthday is on Halloween, and one year we were all sat down celebrating his birthday while also handing out candy to the trick or treaters. Everything was great! We were eating cake, watching some spooky movies on tv, and generally having a lovely time. Then this one kid (who was completely alone for some reason???) realized that we had cake on the table, and demanded that we give him a slice rather than some of the candy we were passing out. We refused of course, but he wasn't gonna take "No" for an answer!!! He returns 10 minutes later with another kid, and now they're both insisting that we give them cake. We still won't give it to them and now they're getting really pissed off! About half an hour goes by and the same kid comes back again, this time with his mother. Oh I have a story about the best stuff on Halloween, if anyones interested- a place in my neighborhood alternates every year between s’mores and hotdogs (and a can of soda) but part of the deal is that you can sit down at the fire pit in their front yard to make your dog/s’more and take a little break from trick or treating. The old couple are always out there to watch the fire and help open soda cans and stuff. It’s a really wonderful (and surely expensive as hell) little tradition that probably wouldn’t happen anywhere but a small, tight-knit neighborhood like mine where everyone knows everyone :)

Trunk or treat is a real thing done by some churches and schools. The parents decorate the trunk of their cars and hand out candy to the kids in the parking lot. Faster than walking the whole neighborhood, and you get to see all your friends' costumes.

We gave someone a cat once.
To be honest, though, he came to the door with some trick or treaters and wasn’t theirs, so we checked his tag, found out he was named Milo and lived quite a distance from us, brought him inside and called his human. She said he loved tagging along with trick or treaters, but usually didn’t go very far. Her daughter was in middle school and out trick or treating with friends, so she called her to come get Milo. We put him in a bedroom with kibble, water, and a litter box to wait. Our adult cat was not happy about a strange cat in the house, but it was the kitten’s first Halloween and she was already confused so she just went with it. About a half hour later, the daughter turned up with her friends, a little confused. “Mom says you have our cat?” We sent them on their way with Milo the orange kitty and his two brain cells, and extra Halloween candy.

Not the worst thing I’ve gotten but definitely the strangest.
I was trick or treating with a few friends in another neighborhood. My friends rung the doorbell of an undecorated house. As expected (due to the lack of decorations,) they had no candy for us. But, they did have a huge box of oatmeal cups. We got like 60 oatmeal cups out of this. I loved oatmeal.
Those cups stayed at the friends house for at least 2 years. (I think they actually are still there, but we don’t really talk anymore and I haven’t been there for a while.)

Not really a treat i got but more of an experience: one time (actually last year [never too old to go trick or treating i say]) i was dressed up as a Postal Pirate (came up with it the year prior after looking at pirate hats when i was costume shopping for my Halloween Hodge Podge costume [it's a combined mix of concepts from costumes of Halloweens prior] and an interpretation of a character from a CD Rom trivia game), it's basically someone wearing both a cheap pirate costume and the box it came in.
So there was this lady dressed up as a doctor and she assumed that i was dressed up as lake pollution, when i corrected her and said that i was a postal pirate she not only ignored me but DOUBLED DOWN on her assumption before taking her prop syringe and attempting to vaccinate me.
Now some background on me: i am quite autistic and i really don't like it when i get touched, especially if it's strangers. I'm already quite angry at this lady calling my costume ocean pollution especially after correcting her several times. And when i told her (the calmest i could since i made a deal with my mom to not make a scene when trick or treating) to not touch me; she kept trying to inject me. So my plea quickly turned to me aggressively screaming to not fucking touch me as she was proceeding to touch and mess up my costume (it was raining so i was being EXTRA careful with my costume), she ended up getting it after my mom had to intervene and explain to the lady that i am not only on the spectrum, but i REALLY hated being touched and that i was not trick or treating in character (which she was assuming that me correcting her that i was a postal pirate and my panicked screaming was me acting like ocean pollution).
The lady didn't really apologize, i was however able to keep trick or treating since my mom actually agreed that the lady wasn't respecting my boundaries and even stated that she was pretty mean by assuming that the costume i lovingly made was ocean pollution and that she was indirectly calling my costume trash.
The rest of my Halloween was great (aside from the cold rain against my VERY not waterproof costume), i ended up doing a victory lap when my mom tapped out and completely turned my costume into mush (that was the first Halloween where i didn't keep anything from my costume).
If you're curious: this year i'm going as a biblically accurate angel (i got the idea from last year after looking at some wings while shopping for my postal pirate costume), i'm taking extra steps to waterproof it so i won't have a repeat of last year. It's coming along great and i've recently added a Lolita inspired twist to it since it shared some elements from that style. I'm also planning on salvaging a lot of stuff from it for use in projects since it's already getting pretty expensive. I hope this year i can really wow & dazzle the people giving out candy enough for them to not process the fact that i am quite old to be still trick or treating (it cuts on time allowing for more candy!). I also hope i can sign up for a trick or treating charity so i can help people out (and the fact we have a sort of streak of forgetting the red charity boxes and needing to donate our own money and i really want to experience trick or treating with the red charity box! [and it would fit well with my costume]).
A bit of a long rambling comment, but i really wanted to get this story out because it really bugged me when it happened. Hope y'all have a happy Halloween and that people respect your boundaries when going door to door and/or giving out candy!

When I was 13 me and a friend went on a massive candy hunt. Back in 2003 when a kid could walk threw out the entire city and people stayed open until they ran out of candy and the stores ran out of candy from all the candy runs back when people had the spirit of Halloween flowing in their veins I did my last hurray. We left when school got out early at 1am to my place and put on our costumes. Then we went to so many houses I asked to borrow a Walmart shopping cart from Walmart. Now what we did to that cart is both impressive and horrifying. I used a lot of energy to push that cart. So when coming back to the house the cart was without a doubt in pain. By the time we got the cart to my house because I had a good place ready to be able to sort the stuff and we were staying over at my house at the time well the cart broke from the weight. The metal fully bent and could no longer hold the strain of the weight. Those carts carts are designed to hold at least 2000 pounds of weight but we broke the cart. I had to mostly drag the cart back to the store the next day and apologize about not bringing it back the day before and apologized for breaking it. Turns out the guy saw us pushing and pulling it and was horrified at the amount of candy we had. We filled multiple pillow cases and we went door to door and we had to take turns watching the cart and it took both of us to dam near drag it to the house but when we got to a hill the cart was able to get a bit of speed by still really easy to stop because of all the weight. That was the last hurray and I could have trick or treated a few more years but hell nah I went out with a bank and that cart made a few sounds when it hit the ground when the metal fully snapped. To trick or treat after that would have been an insult to trick or treating because there was no fucking way I was going to come close that amount of candy again and well in truth I had so much candy I was able to pass out candy from it while eating it for 2 years and I still had candy up to September of the 3 year after that last hurray. I was 16 when that candy was finally gone. I was 13 when I got the candy and 16 when it was finally gone.

ZAMN. That’s a lot of candy.
In my area, most people now and days finish giving out candy around 10 AM, and usually start around 6 AM. Less candy too, only one or two that we get to pick out. Go home with only half or a quarter and a half filled bag.
Back in 2010-2012, people started at 5-6 AM, and usually finished around 3 AM because of a devils hour myth about candy being poisoned at 3 AM. Most of the people let us loop around and get more candy from them after an hour or less had passed. Candy was much cheaper to buy back then, so most houses had a crap ton of candy to give, whole hand filled scoops. Go home with a full bag, or two full bags if my mom brought an extra bag.
      I miss those days :(

Dam now I get less than 6 to 20 kids max trick or treating. I use to pack up far later but now its like at 5 to 6 pm at latest. I am going to set up a little table in the dirt lot across the street from (K) but I am not sure how many kids I will get. I am going to pass out toys and otter pops. Both types of otter pops will be the same but 1 box will be frozen solid and the other frozen cold but in liquid form. Fun fact if you freeze otter pops then let them thaw then freeze again then thaw then freeze again all the otter pops will not freeze solid but will be as cold as frozen just not ice.

I got what I initially thought to be a ziplock bag of coffee beans, they turned out to be chocolate covered raisins. Didn't eat any as I was always taught by my parents not to eat anything unwrapped (my mom still swears there was a mass candy poisoning in her area when she was a kid, I think it was proven to be an urban legend but she still insists it happened!) I remember an older woman offering me a bowl with totally unwrapped candy covered..somethings? I almost didn't take any but took one to be polite and another after she goaded me to take more. Looking back I'm more concerned how many kids like, picked their butt before reaching into that bowl and now the surface of that candy is germ-city.
One of my friends got ramen from a group of college guys who ran out of candy and resorted to handing out cup-o-noodles and sporks, she was actually super excited.
My family always throws non-candy goodies in with what we give out to trick-or-treaters, little kids go NUTS for spider rings but usually ignore pencils. High schoolers though are surprisingly very grateful for the pencils.

    • @-..l
      @-..l ปีที่แล้ว

It is possible there could’ve been a mass candy poisoning during her time. It was more common for people to poison candy a long time back (approximately 1980s-1990s)
A while back in 2012 of my area, there was a mass candy poisoning from the milk duds which were boxed candies. Easy to open, and then glue shut. No one died, but there were like 20+ kids who got food poisoning. I don’t know what type of poison was used.
My mom would take out all the milk duds we got, and throw them out. To this day, she still does that. Any candies that could be glued closed, my mom occasionally throws out. Anything that is suspiciously wrapped, she throws out.

i used to love doing trunk or treats (only did them to give out candy)!! one year our trunk was bob ross themed, i was dressed as bob ross and pretending to paint on a printed out bob ross painting. we gave out animal crackers and regular candy and while the kids didnt all understand, the parents loved it. the next year i was beetlejuice and had my parents be adam and barbara (but only my dad was readable as adam, mom didnt have anything that looked like barbaras clothes 😔). my dog was meant to be lydia in her wedding costume (a red tutu), but it got rained out and my puppy wasnt allowed inside so we had to leave him at home. i danced to jump in the line and day-o for about three hours while giving kids candy and plastic bugs. again, not many kids understood, but the parents were having fun. id probably do trunk or treat again, but preferably not at a church, maybe for a school or community thing :-)

where i'm from in western europe we don't have halloween traditions except for stores selling decorations, it's almost purely a commercial thing. even so we've had kids come to our house trick-or-treating, only without costumes. they demand candy

My favorite Halloween experience so far was because one year we decided to go to every house, regardless of how long/dark the driveway, so we went down this one house that we had never been down before, it had a light on so we knew there were people, and once we got there a slightly confused guy in his early 30s I think opened the door, once they realized what day it was they seemed to get excited? I'm not really sure because I was little and that's what I remember, and they went through there cupboards looking for snacks to give us because we were the first kids to trick or treat there for a good number of years, I think 10+ but again I was little, 7-8 years ago so I can't remember everything well. When I say I was little I mean it was long enough to go for me to not remember well enough, so in some cases 2 years ago would be when I was little, lol

Unrelated, but my dad is in the US Army and every year his fort (where he’s stationed at) hosts a Trunk or Treat and makes the bed of his lorry look like the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars. Lights, decorations, ambiance, and music and everything.
    Every. Year.
    I love my dad sometimes

My neighbor has a lime tree so he always has way too many limes. On Halloween he gives out a small piece of candy for every five limes that you pick.
