If you've never been to Boulder, understand that there is a short thunderstorm there almost every summer afternoon. As children, we would swim in the community pool each afternoon but were trained to run home whenever we saw someone's hair begin to lift up from the electric charge --which was often. Our lifeguard had herself had a near miss with lightning and we were always aware of the danger even as very small children. These thunderstorms are remarkable for their regularity --often happening at the same time of day each day and only bringing rain and lightning for a few minutes. This weather is part of why the National Center for Atmospheric Research is located in Boulder.
Eagles, being very large, need large expanses of land, without people bugging 'em, to find food. Oh, and clean water, too, if we're talking about bald eagles. They eat fish.

Chances are one in a million and has never been seen before. But the other news anchor starts off with "this is just one of many challenges these eagles are facing right now" as if eagles being stuck by lightening is a regular common occurance.
Being a wild bird of prey isn't easy. You have to catch almost everything you put in your beak, unless you're lucky enough to find a dead thing that is still edible. As for live things, most of the time the bird of prey will miss. Bummer when you know your family, back at the nest, is hungry and waiting for you.
