Thanks for the informative video Tim, I've loved Portland since my first holiday here in the fifties. The industrial history is amazing. I live in Somerset but often visit and always do a bit of exploring.

Cheers Andy - appreciated! I’m a Dorset bod myself but based up north; found myself with my parents for six months helping them through lockdowns, so, walks from Weymouth helped get me through those times, too. I’ll do another 15 fascinating things on Portland when I get a suitable moment there again!

I remember when I was working for the Royal Navy at Verne Receiver Station (now Fancys Farm) and the Transmitter Station near Portland Bill by the Coast Guard Lookout. I use to have a drink or two in Fortuneswell even though I was a relative poorper.
I’m looking forward to getting back to Portland and making a further video - a fine place to have memories of!

Yeah I know the feeling! Lucky to grow up there and keep being able to go back... but usually live many miles away. But always in my heart!
Very interesting place but unfortunately the museum wasn't open when I was there last May. Next time, a mine visit will be in the programme!
Excellent Tim, I enjoyed this. The Portland Giant was new for me, looking at the screen from a distance I reckon I spotted it very quickly. Amazed you managed to narrow it down to 15.
Thanks Jim; these were what I could include within the limits of my own energy, time and phone memory - I do have a growing list of further fascinating things on Portland! I don’t think I’ll be able to do them with my time in Dorset on this extended stay drawing to a close - but I have many videos in progress from the ridgeway, and hope to make a further video around Wareham and also Dorchester.
I’ve seen a video on the ‘forbidden city’ in Portland, I found it fascinating and would be interested in finding out more about it. Great video

I’ll do another Portland video probably later in the year when I get back to the area; I’ll certainly be thinking about this location (though unlikely try to visit). Such an interesting place. It is many years since I visited Dorset but I must make a visit before too long.
Thanks for your comment - I don't live there but think of returning whenever I can, especially as my parents are still there. I'll do a follow up video for Portland when I can, too.
Great vid, was in Portland the other day and wished I'd known about many of these places.
There was also a railway line that ran along the eastern edge of the island into Easton, apparently you can still walk much of the old route and it has the most spectacular views.
Thanks very much! Yes, I didn’t point it out, but where I’m looking at the Portland Giant, that’s part of the old train line trail along there. Opens up a whole new vibe along that side of Portland. Much later in the year I’ll likely make a Fifteen Further Fascinating Things video, there will be some along that way!
My mom use to ride the train from Portland to Weymouth to go to school and later work, but it closed down in April 1965.

@@TimPrevett it was beautiful! The battery was pretty spooky even on this lovely day, we weren’t brave enough to venture into the very dark tunnel lol. We also managed to see the church ruins and the cove, so windy too, it was brilliant.

Have a great trip - there’s a lot more of Portland I’d like to see. Running out of time for my extended lockdown stay here. I may make another Portland video In the future - but a lot more of southwest Dorset to come In the weeks ahead. I filmed a lot these last few months.

I'm surprised you didn't go see Jack Mantles grave, he was a hero in WWII. Next time perhaps, leave a flower for him from me please.
I will do; it was a short visit at the end of a long day at walking. I don’t live near usually, but hopefully I’ll get to make another Portland video later in the autumn when I’m next in the area and will keep that in mind. Thanks for watching and responding
Thanks for a great vid Tim. We had such a great time on Portland thanks to your video, we would have missed most of these treats otherwise. We noticed that no4, the line of stones, align perfectly with a church steeple, I think St. George’s?

Been living on Portland (Fraggle Rock.....old pun, don't worry) for all of my 46 years, but was sadly born in Wyke, unlike my brother, mother and her sister.
Yes I am still a Portlander as I was only away from the Isle for less than 24hrs.
Any how there are many areas of Portland that tourists do not know about and lately many islanders do not know about, which is a real shame.
The Cow Fields - The Torpedo Tunnels - The Underground Hospital to name but a few.
Its a fascinating place to explore, but you'll need more than one day to explore all of the isles areas.
Many tourists just follow the paths and do not explore the vast wild areas of Portland, which I did as a child and in to young adult hood..............the fun stopped after I was injured and can no longer explore the areas I enjoyed whilst growing up.
Will never leave the Island.
Yes we call it an Island and say Islanders, although it is a Isle not a Island, but it use to be an Island once upon a time and one needed a ferry to get to the main land.
Did you know that Portland was the first place (not Weymouth) to house people (those early settlers) mainly because most of Weymouth 4000+ years ago was mash land.
Thanks for your reply! Yes, I visited the Culverwell Mesolithic site quite a few years back. Fascinating stuff, right up my street. Pre-Roman history, prehistory, I particularly love.
I live way up north now, but when I have enough time on a visit back to the Dorset coast, I’ll make another Portland video. Helps me carry the place in my heart and mind more readily.

Sadly, I don’t live there - I come from the area and I had an extended time there seeing my parents through lockdowns. I’m usually much further north!

There is a grave of a titanic passenger from Portland in st Georges churchyard
Thankyou - yes there are so many graves with fascinating stories behind them. I’d love to spend more time in the churchyard when I can visit against, do one of the tours too
@@TimPrevett I could never find the grave because it was always overgrown but they've sorted it out last year and moved graves around to look like it would've after the bomb exploded
A few trees would be nice-- all the old ones are fossilised much like the locals --- LOL 😅😅😅😅
Had a girlfriend lived there circa 1988--- i can honestly say it was the biggest crap hole ive ever visited-- she dumped me -- so lucky escape!!!😅

What narrative have they made up who built the prison
The Verne is Victorian originally, but not a prison until 1949, as far as I know. Do you have another angle? What’s the narrative you know?
