Hi Paul. Thanks very much for your video to Portland on a very hot day. We stayed on the Island in February 2018 and it was very cold but we did get some lovely photos on a sunny day when we went to Portland Bill, saw the lighthouse and had a drink and snack in the café there. It really is a very strange landscape with all those quarries and huge pieces of Portland stone lying about. I loved the blue sea and sky, the views over Chesil Beach and the yachts in the distance near Weymouth. Thanks again for showing us about :)
Thank you so much Cathy! Yes, I will be back there again - so much to see on the island, but, like you say, a strange landscape. Thanks again take care Paul 🙂👍
You keep going to all the locations that l visited in my youth fantastic to see them again though your lense well done Paul yet another beautiful vlog 😎😎😎hope the suntan is not to bad
Ah, no suntan! I always wear long sleeved t-shirts and factor 50 everywhere. Glad you enjoyed the video John. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍 Cheers Paul 🙂
Some people might be bored with the camera placed on a moving vehicle. I love it. I watch many such videos on the front of trains or canal barges. There is so much to see that is not normally photographed. I also echo the other comments. I have fond memories of sleeping the night overlooking Chesil Beach. Magical!
Thanks John! Yes, when I was editing this, I noticed things that I didn't when I was looking through the bus's windows. It is indeed fascinating! Glad you liked it. Take care, Paul 🙂👍
Yes everything is yellow in the south hams too paul, love the crane to move the stone.yes i hate heat walks,my fav is jan to march and sept to jan =less people.loved this video paul .and have a lovely week.@stay safe debs xx ps love the colour changeing you have done debs xx ps love the fossil's and the photo montarge you and roy should get together your both amazing at photograph's.
Yes, the yellow colour seems to be permeating the whole of the South West at the moment. I did a 'Cotswold Walk ' today - was cooler than it has been and had a bit of rain but nowhere near enough! Thanks again debs, take care, Paul 👍🙂
Paul, as you mentioned, a fascinating place, with a great history. I was last on Portland just before the Olympics; the sailing teams were all out practicing in Weymouth Bay which made for a spectacular colourful views. I’ve fond memories of Chesil Beach too, stretching back to that equally hot summer of 1976. I was based up the road at Chickerell Army Camp with the Glosters Army Cadets that summer. I had a great time swimming and Kayaking from the beach. No time for ice cream 😁 I must congratulate you on the quality of your vlog production. It’s improved to an amazing level. Great work. I’m sure you’ll be hitting the 1k subscribers milestone very soon. Des
Thank you Des, that's an excellent comment, and some great memories there! Glad you got to see them prectising for the Olympics - must have been quite a spectacle! Thanks for watching and commenting, take care, Paul.
Another fantastic and well presented video Mr Paul! Great to see Portland, never been and would absolutely love too! Wow, what a sunny day for an explore, mind you, it gets abit too hot especially with plenty of people! What a bustling seaside town! Chesil beach looks beautiful! that battery and military quarry is really interesting! Lovely tour Paul, thank you!!
Thank you! Glad you liked the video - I really enjoyed my day there. I hope to revisit to explore more of the island, not least if which because it has at least two castles and an abandoned church as well as a lovely cove. Thanks again for watching and commenting. Take care, Paul 👍🙂
Thank you David! Yes, I remember holidaying in Weymouth as a child and hearing about this mysterious island called Portland. Well, I thought, many, many years later, I'd find out! I was not dissapointed, and I would very much like to go back again to explore more (when it is cooler though!). Thanks again, Paul.
Superb video Paul! I loved the Olympic Rings, fossil, tramway, tunnel and all the dramatic scenery aswell as the fabulous views from the bus. I have wanted to go to Weymouth and Portland for ages, but want to go even more now!
Thank you Louise for a lovely comment ☺️Yes, it is well worth the trip. I have only just scratched the surface of the island 🏝️ - plenty more to see! I will revisit it again in the autumn. Thanks again, Paul 👍🙂
Hello Paul - greetings from Poland A magnificent video! Fabulous photography, wonderful commentary and great historical information. Please can we go back again for a further visit nearer the lighthouse? The panaramic scenery from Portland is incredible too. Chesil Beach at its very best, Thank you so much for taking us there.
Enjoyable video! Portland is my fave place & I go at least once a fornight, I live just over an hour away. I'm sorry you didn't see any of the sculptures in Tout quarry! They are worth seeing, maybe if you go back, start at Tout then get the bus down to Portland Bill. Portland has 3 castles though one is not so old, 2 windmills and a really interesting museum near one of the castles overlooking the bay reknowned to be where the Vikings first landed in England. It may be only 4 miles long but you'd need a few days walking to see all the 'sights' ;)
Yes, I definitely intend to return to Portland Island. I think it is far better than Weymouth. I don't understand why this island gets such a bad press - maybe the prisons, or the abandoned Olympic architecture? For me though, it is infinitely more interesting than its urban neighbour. I will wait until the summer is over, and the weather improves (i.e. cooler and dryer!). Thanks for the additional information. Take care, Paul 🙂👍
thanks Paul for that video, I visited Weymouth and Portland about 20 years ago. when my parents lived in Poole. Of course the tramway tracks along the front in Weymouth were still there, my digital camera battery ran out and I was forced to buy a cheap APS film camera in a camera shop , the results were not too good!
Hi Michael - I have tried to avoid covering the former railway to Weymouth Quay in my videos simply because it has been covered so many times before on TH-cam, but you can still see the tracks to the quay in situ (and a signal that still is lit!) to the side of the station by B&Q. Sad that your camera battery ran out. I hope to explore more of the former railway on the Isle of Portland. Thanks again, Cheers, Paul 👍🙂
Very brave filming in this crazy heat, your views from the bus were really good, not sure you would have had much better from the open top. You had parts of Portland to yourself, unlike Weymouth.
Thank you! Yes, Portland is much quieter as long as you are away from the main road. There is so much more to explore here, including an abandoned church, at least two castles, another fort, a hidden cove, and, of course, the lighthouse! I'll be back! Thanks again, Paul 🙂👍
Thank you Richard! First visit for me, but I want to return soon! So much more to see on the island. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Paul 👍🙂
Watching now with my hot chocolate!,are trains expensive paul, havent been ages and thinking getting one across europe next year debs.Looks hot there paul in weymouth,I love weymouth but there is alot things like jubilee clock ect i dont know about.love the view of chisel beach think i done a quick covid one year ago there, love dorset, love choclate chip.still watching debs
Hi debs - thank you for contacting your sister, re: subscribing. That's very kind of you 😊. Yes, Weymouth and Portland both lovely places. Re: train fares. They can be expensive, but I always travel after 8.30am (saves a fortune), and I have a Veterans Railcard (I was in the armed forces) - saved 1/3rd off. There are loads of other Railcars - like 2 for 1 (2 people traveling - one pays half fare) I also use an app called Trainpal which is excellent and saves even more - you get reward tokens too. I think you can use Trainpal right across Europe. Hope this helps! Take care, Paul 👍🙂
Yes, lots of prisoners have gone along that road, the only one that connects Portland to the mainland, although previously some would have arrived by secure ship in the 19th C. Cheers, Paul
