Thank you for all your wonderful videos Abbie. I am gradually trying to watch them all! Those huts at Portland Bill took me right back to a childhood holiday there (in the 70s) where every night was disturbed by the fog horn, or so I remember it.
I spent a day in Portland on a cruise ship earlier this year and did the walk until the lighthouse, but had to take a bus back to make it back on time. This is a nice reminder of everything I noticed on the my walk, past the two prisons, the steep wall of Rufus Castle and the lighthouse surrounded beautiful pink spring flowers. Thank you and keep on walking!
Wow! Well, I'm heading down to Dorset next week (the weather's set to be not so great, but never mind!) so have been watching TH-cam videos to get some ideas of what to do while I'm there. I'm SO glad I stumbled across your channel! Your joyful personality, heartfelt appreciation of the natural world and your infectious smile have me hooked. So even if the weather is a bit "British" while I'm there, I'll take a leaf out of your book and just appreciate what's around me, come rain or shine! Thank you. 😊
What a lovely surprise to see our neighbours Andy, Erica and the lovely Monty on your video. They have moved now but many a time I have taken Monty for a walk along those east wears. Don't let the locals hear you say the R word on Portland. They are very superstitious and believe that bunnies' cause cave ins and rock slides and generally bring bad luck when you call them the R word! I always get shouted at by my partner. LOL. If you ever return keep a look out for the wild Portland goats that frequent the firing range that you can see on your video at 14.53 and also adders where you sat on the rock. You should also check out Portland Museum founded by Dr Marie Stopes and the Pirates graveyard both near Church Ope. Thanks for the video, as usual it was very enjoyable, just a shame I missed it last year.
Thank you for another installment of Abbie's world iv very much enjoyed all of your films i've seen so far. I love your enthusiasm and you are so right when you say about being out and doing something like this helps clear the dark spaces within our minds.
Lovely video Abbie glad you got the motivation to do the walk.you are a great inspiration for people to get out there and look what’s around them regardless of where they walk. Well done ! 👍
"Probably shouldn't have done that" (at 30.12 or thereabouts). Nearly wet myself laughing! Great video and some stunning views. Thanks for taking us along.
Enjoyed the video! That was one of my favourite walks, have not been back in years. I used to end off the day with a trip to Rays Fish Shop for a lovely meal of cod and chips. The Isle of Portland once you get away from Portland Harbour never seems to change, almost like going back in time. I certainly enjoy your videos and miss the UK. Greetings from Oregon.
Lovely lovely place. Walked your walk many times. Thanks for the wonderful film and commentary. The ship you saw was RFA Tiderace. The history of POrtland is fascinating. The quarry industry and its history is well worth investigating. Thanks for taking me along - you brought back many superb memories. As an aside, I hope the person who gave you the blackeye, came of worse than you. Superb Abbie!
Great video Abbey I really did enjoy this one, as it is a place that I really want to do some walking myself, but living on the Isle of Wight I still have plenty of walks to do around here, but it is definitely on my list of walks to do. Looking forward to your next walk wherever it is, thanks so much for sharing these walks with us all, it gives everybody some inspiration to get out into the countryside.
I don't often comment on here, but I wanted to say how much I enjoyed your video and particularly your happy, enthusiastic commentary, you are such a positive individual. I'm lucky enough to live on Portland and like to walk our dogs all over it. On your walk for future reference you can have a walk around fields surrounding combefield quarry, you just need to avoid the quarry part. Just keep left on entering through the big entrance gates. I'll be on the lookout for your next video from here on Portland
Great to see another walk on the South Coast. Check out Chichester Harbour some time. Lived there for 20 years in AONB (Chidham). Fabulous walks with views of the natural harbour and South Downs behind. Would love to see a video of this area, as we now live thousands of miles away!
Abbie thanks for your tour today not a place I have visited to date but looks like one to put on a list of to do.Enjoy your geographical notes on risks and landscape as a geographer by my study days now like all outdoors.Portland great place Portland Bill.
We did this exact same hike, had a great day. We stopped at the ‘Jailhouse cafe’ on the way round. Reference the military ship you saw is an old fleet auxiliary ship that the Royal Marines use for training.
Hey Alan, welcome to the tribe! Thanks for checking out my videos and I'm so glad you've been inspired to get out and about - thats what I aim for! Enjoy your adventures!
Thank you a lot for this video! I did this tour several times while we lived in Dorchester mostly runningwise! I've a lot of photos but no video. So now I've one. It's a pity that the weather was a little bit hasy! Otherwise you would have had a much more splendid view. Your description is the best remembrance at my tours! Please more from the Jurassic coast. When you have a look on my photo on the left: It was taken on the top of pulpit rock!
Great video, really enjoyable. I was born and bred on Portland, go back each summer without fail, and love to wander around some of the parts you went through. Just one tip, don’t ever say “rabbit” on Portland! It’s bad luck from back in the old quarrying days!!
Really enjoyed that walk round my fave place Abbie thank you. It's a pity that the closed path means you don't drop down into Chesil Cove as it's a beautiful spot & very popular with divers. Agree with all you say about being outside helping our mental health & contemplating our effect on nature. I don't like all the quarrying & sadly it meant the destruction of a huge burial mound, Kingbarrow & a stone circle! Such a tragedy. I'm moving to Portland very soon I hope.
It took me 5 nights and one morning to get to Inverness, Abbie. West End long stay car park in Ft William after overnight road trip from London then 16.6 miles day day 1, 10.8m day 2, 10.6m day 3, 9.83m day 4, 16.9m day 5 leaving a nice 12.1m stroll into town to catch the 5.30 bus back to Ft William. Those three 10 mile days were really short days because I couldn't pass up spectacular wild camp positions along the high route of Loch Ness and another loch. My video here if you are interested which showcases the backpack and wild camps: th-cam.com/video/ciwH30N2t2Q/w-d-xo.html If you need more info let me know :-)
How long did it take to walk all the way round? Good job by the way 👍 just found this video when searching for stuff on Portland (planning my own little adventure there this summer ☀️)
my home :) There are quite a few hidden sights, have you been to the ghost tunnels? btw I don't think it being a heritage site will change much, thousands of houses have been built over the past decade and more are planning on being built and so on, quite sad because in my grandads time this was a lovely place for outside things like camping and walking, still is, but very little green land compared to that time tbh areas around 20mins are where I went camping last year, quite lovely, lots of wildlife too, adders, lizards etc at 29:30, I can remember when the coastal path was actually there, a lot further out, but erosion takes its toll and that part of the cliff completely fell off during a storm
What a lovely place to live! I haven't been to the ghost tunnels?!?! What are they!? I love that the more time you spend in a place, the more you learn and discover - if only I had more time!! Shame about the building. I guess it is happening everywhere but it gives us even more reason to treasure our wilder areas. Enjoy the sunshine!
It's an old Victorian military place near the Verne, I'm not sure if it's visible from the road or path, worth a visit though. And indeed, there's still things and places I learn about Portland despite living here all my life. I will enjoy the sunshine, thankee
Oh Abbie! You never say the word that you did for that small furry creature! Many Portland families lost loved ones when their burrowing caused collaps in a great quarrying disaster!
I have always wondered Abbie. How are you so good at speaking in front of a camera? How do you remember so much information and facts, and then recite said information and facts. Extremely well spoken, how many takes does these videos take? Or are they all in one take?
Hiya, thanks for watching and the comment. I literally just use my GoPro hero 3+ as it is! I switch between the usual shell housing, or an open case housing, and when it rains I put the waterproof back on so the sound isn't good - its a great piece of kit and very versatile. I don't like spending ages faffing with kit so I do my best to keep it simple and stay in tune with the weather around me.
@@AbbieBarnesWILD I used to live on portland and regularly visit the island, I'd love to do a video with you or come on a walk. Maybe point some things out. I used to live right opposite st peters church. Portland is my play ground. let me know when your next walk is tony.gittins@yahoo.co.uk
YOU! are a breath of fresh air. Thank you for these lovely videos.
I can never get enough of your inspiring videos Abbie. x
During lockdown you have been my guide to the wilds. Thanks so much
I’m so lucky to live on the beautiful Island of Portland. Thanks Abbie for showing how lovely my Island is! Come back and visit us soon!
Thank you for all your wonderful videos Abbie. I am gradually trying to watch them all! Those huts at Portland Bill took me right back to a childhood holiday there (in the 70s) where every night was disturbed by the fog horn, or so I remember it.
Another lovely film, Abbie. Always a pleasure to watch.
for the last 20 years i have been exploring and mapping the extensive caves on portland and still digging today finding new ones all the time
Celebrated my 60th birthday walking around the island, the cream tea at the café I can highly recommend. Another great video.

I just did this walk today, it exceeded expectations!
Thanks for the tour Abbie. Wonderful!

Ah, the Isle of Wight is an amazing place! Must get back there some time. Thanks for watching and the comment. Enjoy your walks!
When I walked the SWCP, there was a training helicopter that kept buzzing above my head the whole route around Portland. Drove me cuckoo !!
Great video. Enjoyed watching my local area ☺

Never had any idea how lovely Portland is,very good video...who gave you the shiner..🙂
Great stuff Abbie, I also used that glorious miracle break in the weather in April to walk and wild camp the Great Glen Way!! 👍
Brilliant!! Even more brilliant since you wild camped! How many days did it take you? Im looking at heading out in early September.
It took me 5 nights and one morning to get to Inverness, Abbie. A few hours really. Just depends how much you stop :)
Nice video Abbie. Wise thoughts about the environment too. Cheers from Arkansas.
Thanks for watching Patrick!
“Beauty is all around us but how many are blind to it! People take little pleasure in the natural and quiet and simple things in life”
Absolutely!
A nice walk Abbie

Brilliant
Oh Abbie! You never say the word that you did for that small furry creature! Many Portland families lost loved ones when their burrowing caused collaps in a great quarrying disaster!
There is a beautiful little chapel on Orkney built by Italian prisoners of war :)
Love the scenes that you passed including the prison. I will google National Trails in the U.K.
Thank you, and please do! They are fantastic!
Just casually mention you've done a marathon and half marathon 😮
Good video. Like the carved animals in the quarry, stunning views, clear shots , what camera do you use?
Thanks for watching! In this video I used a GoPro hero 3+ silver and my phone, which is an android :)
Abbie Barnes | Song Thrush Productions Yeah been thinking about getting a GoPro myself, ATM use my Android but battery's dead by the end of filming!
I have always wondered Abbie. How are you so good at speaking in front of a camera? How do you remember so much information and facts, and then recite said information and facts. Extremely well spoken, how many takes does these videos take? Or are they all in one take?
When you fish you don’t want to see a seal 😂
That "military" boat is an ex RFA Ship now used for training.
Abbie's walks are a million times more engaging than any of those presented by Julia Bradbury.
I would rather have your heat than Southern California. We are at 85 F (29 C). It is a concrete jungle here with few trees and way toooo many cars.
Blimey, thats hot and a real challenge in an urban area! Ill try and make more snow videos to cool you down!!
Cracking videos Abbie. The audio is so clear, especially at it must have been windy. What microphone are you using? #JustCurious

Thanks for your prompt reply. Keep up with the good work Abbie. You are producing some excellent quality content.
Loving your film. I live here.
You can park on my beach and lands anytime.
Best wishes 🙏☀️😊🚐🌍
I love your happy words 😊😊😊
You have a beach on Portland?! Wow! Thank you!
I've got to ask how did you get your black eye ?
07:58 🙏❤👍
just beautiful portland but you go over a bridge to get to the actual isle
Very true :)
Do you think it is a nice area? I'm intrigued by the low property prices there but wondering what the catch is...
I think so! It is certainly diverse.
Every since they began to shut the military base there jobs etc are hard to come by
We treat this world like we have another to go to when we have finished destroying this one....
Sure not wrong there!!
Looks like Gibraltar without the rock
You've missed soo much more interesting stuff on portland you can easily do another video!
Game on!!!!

BOMM!!....Stay Wild!!
Wanted to see Portland, not a continual close - up of you..
this is britain not uk, uk is a corporation not a land.
I think it's a stone hare not a rabbit
did you meet portland bill ??
