Please don't compare a western artist to kpop. Billie Eilish is lucky to be born in the other part of the world, if she had been born in Korea they would destroy her. In Korea, beauty standards are TOO high and talent doesn't earn as much as beauty. A Korean girl once told me that at family gatherings there will always be someone to point out if you are overweight (if they see you "fat"), even if it's the least bit, if you don't meet those beauty expectations they will criticize you.

Shindong has an old school sense of "humor" that teeter-totters between rude and just toxic and it hasn't changed. If you watch the reaction video to Taemin's Advice MV he makes a few "jokes" about Taemin's appearance and basically admits that he was one of the people who used to tease Taemin for his appearance for being pretty or "looking like a woman", saying how it was always like that as if it were a cute story - when most of us knows how that used to really bother Taemin until he decided to own the concept of being both masculine and feminine.
Jonghyun saw Taemin's struggle and wrote Pretty Boy, basically an f-you anthem of the stereotypes people have of what a man is or should be, that being sensitive or a pretty boy somehow doesn't make you a man.
As for weight, rhe focus should be on being healthy not the number on a scale. Idols need a better support system that suit their needs for all of the hard work they do and energy they burn. It make me so angry when an idol says they've not eaten or all they've eaten for whole week was ONE piece of grilled chicken and sweet potatoes. Literally, just water and freaking sweet potatoes and half of the time not even a whole potato the entire day. How in the hell can one maintain a healthy mind and body on just sweet potatoes when you burn more calories in one day than you intake all week!?

But what kind of nonsense are you talking about do you even know Korean ? Or know SHINee X SuJu relationship??
When he said that he actually was talking about the concept that the very own Taemin as you said choose in that MV; furthermore He was being funny when he talked about it, he was talking from a director point of view, another thing Shindong is the SuJu that never use aegyo or talks in a cute way; but he used that cute and sweet tone while talking about Taemin, that’s mean he was actually praising and adoring his concept. Super Junior is one of the groups that always been there for SHINee, even when they were traines Suju take care of them specially Jinki, Minho and Taemin; hi search how SHINee loves SuJu to the moon and back how SuJu is always there when they were struggling, when they have hard times; SuJu was there; when they have his glory days SuJu was there; they know them even more than the fans do cos they all grow up together and Super Junior have always treated SHINee as their precious little brothers when SHINee got sick was SuJu who covered for them even if they don’t know the chorro they did their best for SHINee, of course like brothers the love to tease each other; Minho have bashed Eunhyuk in the past and you don see jewels ( his own fandom ) coming for him; because we understand that they are that close that the tease each other like that !!

    • @SerenityWicked
      @SerenityWicked 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@johysjofdj There is something that should be clarified here - I never said anything bad about Super Junior. I am very aware of how close Super Junior is with SHINee and how they support them. If I'm not mistaken, Shindong was the one who directed one of Taemin's live performances before his enlistment. I'm also aware of how much support there was for them when they lost Jonghyun. The only thing I addressed in my post was my opinion of Shindong's sense of humor; nothing more, nothing less.
I personally like Super Junior. They were one of the first set of groups I've listened to since 2007. However, Shindong does have an old school sense of humor that ebbs into those territories at times - as do many other idols, actors, and comedians. Just because it's commonplace does not mean I have to like, enjoy, or agree to it on a personal level.
For contextual sake, I will say this: people in general who make certain types of jokes, I don't find humor in anymore for very specific and personal reasons. Be it a celebrity, a friend, or my own family.
It's easy to write something off as just a joke if your only looking at one side of it. Everyone always thinks of how to make others laugh, but never how that punchline may make someone feel if there is a specific target. I grew up with this sort of "humor", and to make a long and tragic story short, have lost a close family friend to suicide because of of a topic like this.
My brother found him. Our mom found his journals. In his journals, he wrote every heartbreaking detail of how others made him feel. Every joke, every comment, every outright insult. He was a kind and sensitive man and a devoted father of 3 kids, yet was aways made fun of for "not being man enough" and people always "joking" about him on a personal level because he did not fit a macho stereotype. When what you think is a light hearted joke with good intentions results in something like that - it changes your prospective forever.
We all tease people we like or care about but at some point there is a line that should be drawn to what is considered funny versus potentially harmful. It's up to you where you draw that line, and what consequences may result from it. For idols, we only see a small spectrum of their lives and personalities through a lense. Taemin for example may have developed a thicker skin, but that doesn't mean other people have and in the long run, helping someone in a situation doesn't constitute bad jokes.
No one has to agree with me or like my opinion. That's all it is, an opinion. I'm not an anti throwing hate or shade to another group or fandom (I like Super Junior) nor am I unaware of Korean or Asian culture in general (I'm part, my mom is half) I'm just someone with my own personal experiences that addressed a bothering topic.

I've been bullied for being chubby my whole life and seeing someone else getting bullied or shamed for how they look (skinny or fat) is very painful for me even if it's someone I hate because I know what it feels like to be hungry and wanting to eat but remembering "what if I get fat after eating this? What if people start hating me again?" I've been through that and I had lost so much weight and passed out during our P.E. class then I had to stay at a hospital for 5 months I used to eat only vegetables, chicken and liquid food and I used to vomit right after eating so I was pretty much surviving on water and the little bits of what I ate and I still have that food phobia kinda thing I still eat very little

He was just saying what almost all Koreans thought and still think for many. They are obsessed by beauty and standardisation. Once you get that, you can hope for their mentality to change little by little but you can't blame just one man raised in this society to tell what this society think. He knew because he was fat shamed since his debut (and had to do a lot of diets too); he was just saying that woman need to look beautiful if they want to be well accepted in Korea and it was and still is unfortunately a fact that beauty with really strict standards are the norm in Korea. Blame almost all Koreans for that. They constantly speak or joke about beauty/look in tv shows and in real life, when they say hello. It takes time to change this kind of mentality in a country where living out of the norm is not accepted.

For those who don't hate blindly and are intellectually honest, here's the truth about Shindong's case: He was actually defending the woman!
Those are bad translations and out of context. What happened was the girl told about her situation and Shindong said those things like a social critic. He was saying fat men would say stuff like that to women and then they would say it was ok for them to be fat because they are men. Like that's how society treats people, and it's even worse with women. He was actually defending the woman!
Then it was asked if he thought idol women should be fat and he said no, because they would suffer too much. He was "a man" and still people hated on him and he suffered a lot, but people would be even worse with women and call them lazy and ask why they didn't take care of themselves and stuff like that and he never wanted a girl to go through what he went through and much worse.
Same applies with the other members. Social critics taken out of context to make it look like it was their opinions and not them defending others.

The complete irony that people say “you need to be healthy and take care of yourself … ok now go starve yourself to be bone skinny” like wtf?
And fun fact, it’s actually easier and quicker to die from anorexia than to die from obesity. People act like hating fat is due to health reasons but in reality, they just hate it because of beauty standards. People just like to use “health” as an excuse. It’s never about health, it’s about looking like a goddamn Barbie doll.

The saddest thing with this is that even if there may be some ppl who are not obsessed with how idols bodies looks like, majority of fans actually do care about it. Many idols (especially females) even quit because of the hate they received. And sometimes it wasn't only the direct hate but just a different treatment or less popularity. I remember the video from Pristin fanmeeting when literally nobody was paying attention to Kyla when she posed. It wasn't a direct hate towards her but imagine how she probably felt that time... Also in different survival shows ppl tend tp vote more for trainees with ideal figure. They mostly vote not based on their actual talent but visual. That's why as i absolutely hate fat shaming i understand companies point of views to some degree. Sometimes it may be better for an idol to go on a diet than be constantly criticized - as long as it not too dreadful ofc.

Although what he said was extremely upsetting it is true in many societies, women are expected to look top notch while the men are praised or not looked down upon as much as women for merely being average. His whole career he has always been that "big" member but he still remained that way even with the constant criticism I mean look at the female idols on the list they were told couple of times that they were "fat" and they lost an insane amount of weight in a short span of time, like Momo wouldn't even have performed if she didn't lose 7kg in a week while Shindong had a decade and they were still no changes to his weight.Although what he said was harsh it is sadly the reality that most women have to go through and we all know it.

Lots of female idols gets criticized for gaining/losing weight! Secret's Hyosung also had a similar case as Ailee, people kept telling her to lose weight and when she did they would criticize her for losing weight saying she was "prettier" before.
Also Jihyo in SIXTEEN was criticized by the judge panel in their photoshoot mission (if i remember correctly it was the photographer) and she was disrespectful towards jihyo while taking the pictures and after when the judges were talking about which member was the best model.
I wanna also mention Hyuna who was criticized for posting picture of her weight that indicated she was 45kg i guess or something like that, and people said she was encouraging an unhealthy weight for younger fans when in reality she was struggling into gaining weight and actually was getting healthier and wanted to show people that she was gaining weight.
In conclusion, people love body shaming idols whether it be for gaining or losing weight and sometimes it's so disgusting!
