    We harvested 15 cantaloupe from the garden this year. Freeze drying it was a bonus. So good freeze dried.

      I envy you! I did save the seeds from one of these, I am going to try and grow a few in pots, TH-cam says it can be done

      Good luck, we have 1 peach tree that was started by seed. Hasn't produced yet given it's only 2 years old. Can't wait for it to produce.@@JohnInBibs

    I just ordered my freeze dryer and have been binge watching your channel. I can’t wait to get started, I’m moving to Florida in December so I should get a good stock built up before all the storms hit next year and we lose power

    I’ll have to try that. The other day I was freeze drying different things and I had some space left so I looked in my freezer and I had sliced okra from my garden. So I FD it and it was a real treat, I was so surprised

      I haven't really done okra but I hear it comes out real well!

    What freeze setting did you use? The ones we tried didn't keep their shape. They look a bit more like dehydrated cantaloupe.

    • @JohnInBibs
      @JohnInBibs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have never changed my FD settings. I use factory settings and always pre freeze my loads in the freezer for 24 hours.

      @@JohnInBibs thank ya! Thought that's what I did, but double checked and the extra freeze time had been changed to 0. Maybe that is the issue. Thanks again.

    "Ripe" cantaloupe always 'SMELLS like ripe cantaloupe before its cut open. However, I get mine from my garden.

  • @sinclairpages
    @sinclairpages ปีที่แล้ว +1

    To make sure your cantaloupe is ripe, pick one that have NO green on them.

  • @bettybradley8369

    Bananas are the same way. They are much better if they are really ripe, in my opinion.

    • @JohnInBibs
      @JohnInBibs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John In Bibs LOVES sweets, but I find with my bananas that I like to do them when they are bright yellow before any brown spots. For me once the bananas start to spot then the FD bananas seem too sweet (if there is even such a thing, LOL)

      For sure, especially banana nut bread. Freeze dried, even better. Don't be fooled by color.

    @John, I came across fruit, eggs, & cheese that I did in March. I ran out OAs and in meantime just rolled the bags tight-- then forgot about these when O2 As came.
    Would they still be ok to add O2As and seal?

    • @JohnInBibs
      @JohnInBibs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anything I say in this reply is only my opinion. I would not trust the eggs. I would taste the fruit and see if it is still crispy. I would test the cheese to see if it is still dry and then taste a small bit of it to see if it is rancid (I would probably toss the cheese though)

    John is it possible to reconstitute cantaloupe?

      I don't know, it might turn to mush

    I freeze dried a batch of cantaloupe. I ran the process for 46 hours and even though the fruit is crispy, crunchy and quite delicious, it is also a bit sticky. Is this normal with cantaloupe? Should I have dried the fruit longer?
    Thank you in advance to anyone that answers my questions.

      Mine was, and just a few days later it had gone soft in the mylar bag (no good anymore). So be warned I guess?

    I would be afraid it has too much sugar in it.
