    I just love that it features total badasses regularly ugly-crying for all kinds of different reasons. In most media, men aren't allowed to cry outside of the most extreme circumstances, like losing a child, and even then it can only be one single tear dripping down their otherwise stoic and determined face. In one piece, a good man will cry when his loved ones die, but he'll also cry because he's moved by a sad story, or something his friends did for him, or because he's reuniting with those friends. And then he'll turn around and knock the stuffing out of some bad guys. Wearing your heart on your sleeve and being vulnerable with those you care about is seen as a good thing which not only doesn't make you any less badass, but it helps you to accomplish your goals and be even MORE badass than if you'd hidden everything away. The series can get repetitive with its formula, but godDAMN does it do masculinity so well.

    One thing I've noticed is that despite Big Mom's big dream of making her people into one big family, she's only really turned it into a business.
    In a family, you would never be ashamed to show your face, even if you got laughed at. Because those are your younger siblings, you love them, even if they're being goofs or assholes. In a family, you would never have to become the pillar for your peers, or act like everything is business. In a family, you don't have to be ashamed of losing when there are sisters and brothers to wipe your wounds and lift you up.

  • @rileycyrus5065
    @rileycyrus5065 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    I'd like to think a large part of katakuri's insecurities were a result of big mom's parenting. She claims to love all races of their world yet was disgusted when she noticed pudding's third eye. Also When her youngest children would chase each other with weapons she cheered them on. The pressure from that type of environment as well as the incident with his sister likely became what could've given early rise to his dysphoria, causing him to not be able to develop bonds with his family. Choosing to become a black sheep instead.

    One Piece drestoys the myth of masculinity being something that is inherently toxic and broken in the first issue. True masculinity. Where Shanks shrugs off some Bro who wants to fight because he is so bad ass. Yes Shanks is the true masculin hero here. And he does everything that is counter to so called masculinity and shows what real confidence and self esteem is. It’s what’s great about this show.

    I find it so sad that masculinity, and just being a man and manly is often condemned as a whole in large parts of the modern world. Toxic masculinity is a thing, but masculinity in itself is not bad(same with femininity, and toxic femininity). There is a reason we add an extra word when we refer negatively towards masculinity.
    I have seen with my own eyes young boys taking to Andrew Tate and people like him, and learning and living by his views because he is one of the few that does not talk down on masculinity, and the concept of manly men.
    It's quite sad, and quite uncomfortable for me as a female when young guys I care about suddenly started expressing those degrading views toward my gender(I live in a country where men and woman is nothing but equal. We have our differences, but not because one is looked at or treated as less. Of course, it's not perfect, but I might be pessimistic when I doubt perfection is possible. So talk like that is quite uncommon).
    I know they do not have cruel intentions, but a lot of bullshit has been spunged into their brains, and I have had to have a talk with some of them because of this.
    I remember being taken aback when Luffy expressed not wanting frills on his clothes because it was girly and that he didn't want the others to laugh at him. I took him as someone that simply would not care if something was "girly" or not. But then it makes sense because a lot of men in One Piece are all about the "honor of a man", and the responsibilities and codes they live by because of this. Luffy is no exception. And I had to wonder if it was a bad thing that Luffy did not want to wear "girly" things.
    Some would call it toxicity. But it's really not.
    It's not like he looks down on those girly things or anyone that likes that. Luffy is the furthest thing from toxic. He just doesn't want to wear them himself.
    Because I was taken aback that Luffy was not okay with wearing girly things, I had to consider why. And realized masculinity is treated quite badly when it should not. Instead, we should embrace that masculinity and femininity exist. Neither is inherently bad.
    Girls being shamed for being "too feminine", and boys being told they are inherently toxic for being masculine or even just a man is bad and unhealthy.
    One Piece masculinity is something that should be more normal to see in media I think. Big, cool, manly men expressing their emotions, living their lives to the fullest with all their hardships and joys, and following their honor codes is badass as hell.
    At least that is my perspective as a female.

    • @wesleywallace4426
      @wesleywallace4426 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I think Luffy is perfectly fine to not want to wear frills, I think people have the right to have preferences, likes, and dislikes. People don't have the right to be unnecessarily rude, but I don't think people making themselves uncomfortable in order to be seen as politically correct is the right way.

    • @kunilsen2519
      @kunilsen2519 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@wesleywallace4426 Completely agree with you. This is why I found it strange that I was taken aback when Luffy was unhappy with the frills.
      I was more or less unconsciously thinking that gender clothes/preferences are not ideal. But I honestly think as long as people are comfortable and happy with what they are wearing it really doesn't matter. There is nothing wrong with Luffy not wanting to wear more feminine clothes.

    This was basically a Luffy vs katakuri analysis. But I wanted to make longer videos so I ended up forcing an anthology. It’s hardly about masculinity I just couldn’t think of a better word to string these common themes together. In hindsight I should have framed it as Luffy vs Katakuri and sprinkle in how these themes were used elsewhere.

      @mohamedrawadali7938 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      No I think you were right. I actually would have liked if you made a conclusion that would tie things neatly into a final commentary about masculinity.
      I don't know if you planned on it but you actually made a good dissection of what toxic masculinity is through your analysis of Katakuri. Katakuri and big mom's family is the embodiment of just how harmful the burden put on boys to perform can be. In any cases, I'm happy that somebody finally made a video about that topic because it's something that I always saw in one piece and really appreciated. The way oda, through goofiness and absurd, manages to deconstruct steretipical masculinity and create male characters that are badass and endearing at the same time.

    Okay I agree with your point regarding Oden. The thing is, he would’ve killed Kaido in their battle if he was not tricked. Kaido even knew it. It’s why he became suicidal. He yearns for the death that he deserved. Kaido hoped the Akayaza samurai would kill him, to gain the satisfaction of death at the hands of the Kozuki inheriting Oden’s will. great video on the topic of masculinity, I feel the term "toxic masculinity" has been thrown around too haphazardly and without any real understanding of what is means, to the point any display of a typically masculine trait/act is seen as "toxic masculinity". masculinity has never been the problem, the real problem is when you take something to an extreme, any trait taken to it's extreme (or the extreme of the total lack of said quality) can become toxic/detrimental to a person. your video did a great job at displaying how One piece shows these traits in there most noble forms and there dangerous forms in a very smart and thought out way.
    additionally, your section on katakuri was specifically really amazing. in my life I have often felt like katakuri/had to act in a similar vain and as a result made some of the same mistakes/flaws that came as a result. so the way you analyzed that section was not only more in depth than other katakuri analysis but also really thought provoking to me and I find that commendable

    This whole thing where Katakuri is afraid people will make fun of him for his mouth, makes no sense given the context of One Piece. There are so many weird looking characters and they are considered normal by their surrounding characters. Fat, skinny, tall, short, monstrous, ugly etc. So the concept of Katakuri being considered weird for having that mouth just doesn't add up. It's like a talking animal being considered strange in Bugs Bunny where there are so many other talking animals.

    I never understood Luffy as a man and I never undersood why when he first went Snakeman and go slapped down he loudly said HURTTTS AND said weird things. He was showing Katakuri the difference beween the type of men hey are.

    Gotta disagree on the Marineford point. Luffy was the only reason the white beard pirates got so far, he just couldn't handle the big guys but literally no white beard pirate did. I agree with everything else though

    What about whitebeard is he a man since he never had injuries on his back cause he never ran from a fight or whitebeard is like ace he never ran to protect his family
