Hell, if you want to get technical (Apart from the shotguns, obviously, which the other classes can also use, so I'm guessing those are just standard issue for all mercs, and the Manmelter, which was given to him) Pyro's secondaries and melee weapons aren't actually weapons, but household instruments and tools he somehow managed to put to very good use at killing people, if he wasn't so goddamn insane, I'd imagine he'd actually be a pretty smart guy, which the comics do allude to. And no, a fire axe is not a weapon, it's made to carve doors in, not skulls.

Theory on the pyrovision I've always had since I've had to work in respirators and masks before is that he see that stuff because of oxygen deprivation or contaminated filters. Like if you are in suit or on air tank too long you start to get kind of delirious and some people start to see things that arent there.
Quick correction. At one point in A Cold Day in Hell (in the main comic series), Pyro is actually shown to have knowledge that they are holding an axe, and that it does not good things to bears. So they know what they're doing, but willfully ignore it, and probably often forget about it entirely. Also, from a death screenshot of Pyro, where your various body parts are labeled as "Your arm!" or "Your heart!" there is one part that is labeled as "Your womb!" However, that could just be a baboon uterus Medic put in there, like he did with the classic team. So still ambiguous sex.

I was actually quite the pyromaniac as a child. I loved setting things on fire. So did my brother, actually. I feel like there is a very pure and childlike element of being fascinated by fire.
I mean i can see it happen in the tf2 universe I would think that to raise an insane madman to kill you don't have to bioengineer it just give it goggles that obsecure his vision making him think he is doing good instead of killing them

Today's episode of the life of Pyro: Mom said I had to do something that required covering people in sparkly rainbows. Then I had to give all of them lollipops. Today was a good day.
Imagine: the year is 20XX, The final major tf2 update is being released. A 5 minute cinematic drops, and the comments are disabled. It's just pyro staring at the camera, breathing, until the very end, when he slowly and dramatically takes off his mask, revealing... Gaben himself. "After X years, hopefully it was worth the wait"... Fans rejoice at a famous mystery being solved, and tf2 is never updated again.
I like the concept of Pyro not really having a specified gender/ character look. I like the mysterious side of him paired with the danger/childish part just makes him up to however interpretation.
All I know about Pyro is that they're a kid in a mann's body, likes fire, sees the world in a much mote wholesome light than expected, makes the fearless afraid, and has definitely been rewarded candy after missions.
I'm very sure that Mrs Pauling or at least the Administrator knows the Pyro's identity. They don't seem like the type to not keep tabs on their employees

Story time: When I was real young, my dad used to have this big collection of computer games on a rack, and he used to let me look at the cases. He had the Orange Box (‘cause he’s awesome like that), and the TF2 portion always interested me the most. Due to the picture being low quality (and me having not-great eyes), I thought the pyro was a sapient monkey in a suit with a flamethrower. And that’s still my head canon. Ya gotta love imagination.
Well i mean poopy joe was evidently smart enough to be able to fly a rocket and use a sword, so a chimp or something like that putting on a fireproof suit and dicking around with a flame thrower fits pretty nicely into canon
Here's my small theory on pyro: Pyro, wether female or male, was involved in a government experiment. The experiment would be the mask in which he/she wears. The mask, would hijack the brains visual percepors, and project a much less threatening image, when in a threatening situation. The theory being, that this would make it easier to deal with the consequences of combat. However, during the experiment, something goes wrong. And the mask gets stuck to his/her face, leading to eventual insanity. Knowing what they see isn't what's actually happening, but being able to do nothing about it, would drive them insane. Never knowing what's real and what isn't. Thus, a short time later, (likely a week later) they would escape the facility, in a fluster and rage, and go on about life. Lost, confused, and certifiably insane. Until one day, a "kind" person, would come along, and offer them a job, something interesting to do. And that's pyro. Wether male or female. :D
Seeing as Pyro made up a scenario in which attacking a cute (but in reality a life-threatening) bear would be justified, I believe he does have a better idea about what the world looks like than we think, and she somewhat knows Pyroland is made up. It seems that her mind is just trying to make all the violence feel fun and non-scary, shielding them from any trauma, maybe after living through some nasty stuff. And since TF2 universe is kinda non-angsty, this would probably stay untouched, just as whatever Medic did during the WWII.

Why? To be a sniper you have to be a trained cold hearted killer with heavy discipline. Him shooting a girl in the overies just shows me more of his cold hearted professionalism. His intro is literally him meticulously hunting every one down as a payed hitman. (I hate edgelords, but they are drawn to sniper for a reason)
Some speculation about "Pyrovision" or just Pyro's POV. The visuals we see in "Meet the Pyro" are not actually what Pyro sees, they are meerly a representation of Pyro's mind, like when a child plays with a toy gun, they percieve it differently than we do. Namely, Pyro's association with fire is skewed into a good thing, rather than a bad one. Pyro is a competent fighter and knows to use fire to defend itself, as seen in "Expiration Date", where the Pyro can be seen dodging a tentacle and then blasting the monster with fire at the last moment, saving himself from getting chomped. He knows pain, and he knows to protect himself from threats, but his mentality is that it is all fun and games when it comes to fire. Fire good, other violence bad.

Engineer made the goggles so it doesn't see the real world anymore 2: (something else that happened after it got hurt) Engineer developed the goggles so other people could try to understand Pyro but most (except Pauling) refused because they didnt want to see what he sees. Except probably medic who doesn't care because hes already mad. 3: medic experimented on Pyro and thats what caused him to act like that. Or the reason he needs the goggles. Nobody knows except Engineer and obviously Pauling. Pauling because she is on both teams and watches them to make sure the announcers plan works. Engineer because he is "close" with the medic as shown in the "teleporting bread scene" and probably where the Medic's gear comes from. Also engineer is close with the announcer. He is the reason she still is alive.
Pyro in the meet the pyro video makes pyro seem like a cold blooded murderer but in the comics pyro acts and looks like a child i mean just look at it! Sooo cuute! Also in the expiration date pyro chases the little bread monster like it's a dog.
Idea: Many old gas mask filters contained asbestos, which is known to cause cancer. Pyro wears that mask constantly, and so it is possible he has inhaled asbestos from the gas mask filter and got lung cancer, and the cancer spread to his brain, where the tumours have led to severe hallucinations.

I have the headcanon that whatever they are, Pyro isnt exactly human. I like the radiation idea, hence the gas mask. A demon is also plausable. Also fun fact: Pyros flamethrower is just a leafblower attached to a propane tank which is why he can also airdry people in game :0
My theory is that he is some guy who got disfigured as a child, probably because of accidents with fire and yeah he got ptsd and his parents got him the mask to help him overcome his fear of fire, which he now loves.
Man the Pyro is just so loveable in the lore, but in the game... Not many people like him. Also I find it funny that the 2 most hated classes are voiced by the same guy.
Theory: Pyro used to work in a biological threat containment unit, and wore a giant face mask that sprayed chemicals every so often to "pacify" him/her and make it much easier to deal with the horrors of bio-weaponry, especially in this universe. However, during a particularly rigorous mission involving some very toxic adhesive chemicals that may or may not have necromantic properties, one of them somehow managed to get the chemical on the borders of the face mask, but the mask was enough to save the poor Pyro. Unfortunately, this was an ADHESIVE chemical, so it stuck the mask to his face and wreaked havoc on the controlled-release pacification chems. Thus, he left, and now he looks for anything that will keep him occupied and not want to kill himself before the adhesive eventually wears off, hence the participation in the gravel wars.
I have a theory that the Pyro is actually an alien of some kind (or maybe from another dimension). There are a few hints about it, though they're purely speculation, nothing actually concrete. 1: It uses both male and female cosmetics (as an alien, probably having no understanding of gender roles or differences 2: It has many space themed cosmetics and even items (yes the other mercs have some too, but the pyro has quite a bit more than the others, and many of them were made even before any space themed updates) 3: Probably the biggest hint is that during the comic introducing the space themed weapons (Dr. Grordbort's Landing and True Meaning), Engineer asks if Pyro had been writing mail to other dimensions. Probably meant that as a slight joke, but still, wouldn't surprise me if Pyro was in contact with other worldly parties. . . Again, these are all just speculation. None of this is actually "proof", but I think it's a nice little theory that could fit in the TF2 universe.
2. It's probably because he has a mask, that means you can put literally.. Anything on it, and it looks awesome. It would be weird to put some alien heads on other mercenaries (except maybe Scout). I mean, look at Pyro's cosmetics and say they are not awesome and cool looking 3. Engineer said after Pyro's response "Naw, me neither" which means Pyro said probably he didn't.
I always assumed Pyro is fully aware of what's going on since most of his flamethrowers are home made, also I like to think the Pyrovision goggles are something pyro made himself to make his job easier

Story time:
When I was real young, my dad used to have this big collection of computer games on a rack, and he used to let me look at the cases. He had the Orange Box (‘cause he’s awesome like that), and the TF2 portion always interested me the most. Due to the picture being low quality (and me having not-great eyes), I thought the pyro was a sapient monkey in a suit with a flamethrower. And that’s still my head canon. Ya gotta love imagination.
Well i mean poopy joe was evidently smart enough to be able to fly a rocket and use a sword, so a chimp or something like that putting on a fireproof suit and dicking around with a flame thrower fits pretty nicely into canon

Here's my small theory on pyro:
Pyro, wether female or male, was involved in a government experiment. The experiment would be the mask in which he/she wears. The mask, would hijack the brains visual percepors, and project a much less threatening image, when in a threatening situation. The theory being, that this would make it easier to deal with the consequences of combat.
However, during the experiment, something goes wrong. And the mask gets stuck to his/her face, leading to eventual insanity. Knowing what they see isn't what's actually happening, but being able to do nothing about it, would drive them insane. Never knowing what's real and what isn't. Thus, a short time later, (likely a week later) they would escape the facility, in a fluster and rage, and go on about life. Lost, confused, and certifiably insane.
Until one day, a "kind" person, would come along, and offer them a job, something interesting to do.
And that's pyro. Wether male or female. :D

Seeing as Pyro made up a scenario in which attacking a cute (but in reality a life-threatening) bear would be justified, I believe he does have a better idea about what the world looks like than we think, and she somewhat knows Pyroland is made up. It seems that her mind is just trying to make all the violence feel fun and non-scary, shielding them from any trauma, maybe after living through some nasty stuff. And since TF2 universe is kinda non-angsty, this would probably stay untouched, just as whatever Medic did during the WWII.

Some speculation about "Pyrovision" or just Pyro's POV. The visuals we see in "Meet the Pyro" are not actually what Pyro sees, they are meerly a representation of Pyro's mind, like when a child plays with a toy gun, they percieve it differently than we do. Namely, Pyro's association with fire is skewed into a good thing, rather than a bad one. Pyro is a competent fighter and knows to use fire to defend itself, as seen in "Expiration Date", where the Pyro can be seen dodging a tentacle and then blasting the monster with fire at the last moment, saving himself from getting chomped. He knows pain, and he knows to protect himself from threats, but his mentality is that it is all fun and games when it comes to fire. Fire good, other violence bad.

1: pyro was severely burned or harmed in and accident causing pyro to have the mental capacity of a child. Engineer made the goggles so it doesn't see the real world anymore
2: (something else that happened after it got hurt) Engineer developed the goggles so other people could try to understand Pyro but most (except Pauling) refused because they didnt want to see what he sees. Except probably medic who doesn't care because hes already mad.
3: medic experimented on Pyro and thats what caused him to act like that. Or the reason he needs the goggles. Nobody knows except Engineer and obviously Pauling. Pauling because she is on both teams and watches them to make sure the announcers plan works. Engineer because he is "close" with the medic as shown in the "teleporting bread scene" and probably where the Medic's gear comes from. Also engineer is close with the announcer. He is the reason she still is alive.

Idea: Many old gas mask filters contained asbestos, which is known to cause cancer. Pyro wears that mask constantly, and so it is possible he has inhaled asbestos from the gas mask filter and got lung cancer, and the cancer spread to his brain, where the tumours have led to severe hallucinations.

Theory: Pyro used to work in a biological threat containment unit, and wore a giant face mask that sprayed chemicals every so often to "pacify" him/her and make it much easier to deal with the horrors of bio-weaponry, especially in this universe. However, during a particularly rigorous mission involving some very toxic adhesive chemicals that may or may not have necromantic properties, one of them somehow managed to get the chemical on the borders of the face mask, but the mask was enough to save the poor Pyro. Unfortunately, this was an ADHESIVE chemical, so it stuck the mask to his face and wreaked havoc on the controlled-release pacification chems. Thus, he left, and now he looks for anything that will keep him occupied and not want to kill himself before the adhesive eventually wears off, hence the participation in the gravel wars.

I have a theory that the Pyro is actually an alien of some kind (or maybe from another dimension). There are a few hints about it, though they're purely speculation, nothing actually concrete.
1: It uses both male and female cosmetics (as an alien, probably having no understanding of gender roles or differences
2: It has many space themed cosmetics and even items (yes the other mercs have some too, but the pyro has quite a bit more than the others, and many of them were made even before any space themed updates)
3: Probably the biggest hint is that during the comic introducing the space themed weapons (Dr. Grordbort's Landing and True Meaning), Engineer asks if Pyro had been writing mail to other dimensions. Probably meant that as a slight joke, but still, wouldn't surprise me if Pyro was in contact with other worldly parties. . .
Again, these are all just speculation. None of this is actually "proof", but I think it's a nice little theory that could fit in the TF2 universe.

2. It's probably because he has a mask, that means you can put literally.. Anything on it, and it looks awesome. It would be weird to put some alien heads on other mercenaries (except maybe Scout). I mean, look at Pyro's cosmetics and say they are not awesome and cool looking
3. Engineer said after Pyro's response "Naw, me neither" which means Pyro said probably he didn't.
pyro is my favorite class to play, the best backstory imo, and i heavily relate to the very vague nature of the pyro's gender and overall vagueness
