Also, something worth noticing is that all of the Pyro's primary weapons, with the exception of the Phlog and the Dragon's Breath, which are explicitly said to have been given to him, are all made out of random assorted crap, which kind of implies that Pyro's got a pretty decent grasp of mechanical engineering, which may explain how he can do more damage to the sentries and destroy sappers with the Homewrecker, since he realizes how to hit them in the right place, as well as his friendship with Engie.
Hell, if you want to get technical (Apart from the shotguns, obviously, which the other classes can also use, so I'm guessing those are just standard issue for all mercs, and the Manmelter, which was given to him) Pyro's secondaries and melee weapons aren't actually weapons, but household instruments and tools he somehow managed to put to very good use at killing people, if he wasn't so goddamn insane, I'd imagine he'd actually be a pretty smart guy, which the comics do allude to.
And no, a fire axe is not a weapon, it's made to carve doors in, not skulls.
I like that half of his tertiaries are just stuff she picked off the ground.

Quick correction. At one point in A Cold Day in Hell (in the main comic series), Pyro is actually shown to have knowledge that they are holding an axe, and that it does not good things to bears. So they know what they're doing, but willfully ignore it, and probably often forget about it entirely.
Also, from a death screenshot of Pyro, where your various body parts are labeled as "Your arm!" or "Your heart!" there is one part that is labeled as "Your womb!" However, that could just be a baboon uterus Medic put in there, like he did with the classic team. So still ambiguous sex.
Now that's the closest to evidence I've seen, actual in game organs, pure genius, however It could be medic's doing for all we know

I like the concept of Pyro not really having a specified gender/ character look. I like the mysterious side of him paired with the danger/childish part just makes him up to however interpretation.

Story time:
When I was real young, my dad used to have this big collection of computer games on a rack, and he used to let me look at the cases. He had the Orange Box (‘cause he’s awesome like that), and the TF2 portion always interested me the most. Due to the picture being low quality (and me having not-great eyes), I thought the pyro was a sapient monkey in a suit with a flamethrower. And that’s still my head canon. Ya gotta love imagination.
Well i mean poopy joe was evidently smart enough to be able to fly a rocket and use a sword, so a chimp or something like that putting on a fireproof suit and dicking around with a flame thrower fits pretty nicely into canon

Seeing as Pyro made up a scenario in which attacking a cute (but in reality a life-threatening) bear would be justified, I believe he does have a better idea about what the world looks like than we think, and she somewhat knows Pyroland is made up. It seems that her mind is just trying to make all the violence feel fun and non-scary, shielding them from any trauma, maybe after living through some nasty stuff. And since TF2 universe is kinda non-angsty, this would probably stay untouched, just as whatever Medic did during the WWII.

Some speculation about "Pyrovision" or just Pyro's POV. The visuals we see in "Meet the Pyro" are not actually what Pyro sees, they are meerly a representation of Pyro's mind, like when a child plays with a toy gun, they percieve it differently than we do. Namely, Pyro's association with fire is skewed into a good thing, rather than a bad one. Pyro is a competent fighter and knows to use fire to defend itself, as seen in "Expiration Date", where the Pyro can be seen dodging a tentacle and then blasting the monster with fire at the last moment, saving himself from getting chomped. He knows pain, and he knows to protect himself from threats, but his mentality is that it is all fun and games when it comes to fire. Fire good, other violence bad.
Idea: Many old gas mask filters contained asbestos, which is known to cause cancer. Pyro wears that mask constantly, and so it is possible he has inhaled asbestos from the gas mask filter and got lung cancer, and the cancer spread to his brain, where the tumours have led to severe hallucinations.
I believe Pyro was experimented on by The Medic into being an abomination which worsened his/her insanity.

Theory: Pyro used to work in a biological threat containment unit, and wore a giant face mask that sprayed chemicals every so often to "pacify" him/her and make it much easier to deal with the horrors of bio-weaponry, especially in this universe. However, during a particularly rigorous mission involving some very toxic adhesive chemicals that may or may not have necromantic properties, one of them somehow managed to get the chemical on the borders of the face mask, but the mask was enough to save the poor Pyro. Unfortunately, this was an ADHESIVE chemical, so it stuck the mask to his face and wreaked havoc on the controlled-release pacification chems. Thus, he left, and now he looks for anything that will keep him occupied and not want to kill himself before the adhesive eventually wears off, hence the participation in the gravel wars.
9:43 I love how Pyro looks so sad in the submarine. I have always envisioned Pyro as a man due to the weapons they make, in that they are not just homemade but also comical in proportions. It just seems like something a man would be more likely to due.
(Also, I am well aware of Pyrovision. However, I took a look at his voice lines and found that they all suggest Pyro can see outside the goggles, which I know is not true, but that's why I put this here. To show that I am aware of the vision thingy)

Just because normally Pyro doesn't know that they're killing doesn't mean that they're completely harmless though. In one of the Mann Co No More Comics, where they try to recruit Heavy back into the team. Pyro delusions a grizzly bear attacking them as Smokey The Bear telling them that fire is bad and shouldn't be played with, they took that advice poorly and decided that smokey needed to die by pulling out a fire axe (mind you this is in their imagination land) and massacred the bear
Theory: Pyro was an arsonist that suffered from severe trauma, and to cope with it, was given the pyrovision mask. The illusions backfired in that Pyro became much more deranged from an outside perspective, while viewing the world as very happy and colorful.

My theory is that the Pyro is of Asian descent, due to Pyro seeing the world in a stereotypical cutesy pastel world, similar to the early 60's Kawaii movement in Japan.
The Pyro has dozens of cosmetics that are directly connected to Japanese or Chinese culture, such as a cat-eared hood, neon lights over their gasmask. They also have cosmetics made specifically as references to popular characters from Asian companies, like Ryu from Street Fighter or the Black/Red Mages from Final Fantasy.

Theory on the pyrovision I've always had since I've had to work in respirators and masks before is that he see that stuff because of oxygen deprivation or contaminated filters. I'm very sure that Mrs Pauling or at least the Administrator knows the Pyro's identity. They don't seem like the type to not keep tabs on their employees

@@KalleBerendijk The medic acces the heart by partially destroying the ribcage, and reaching under the remaining ribcage. The entire rib cage is not destroyed in meet the medic.
Personally I always thought that pyro was Danish because to me the mumbles he make sounded a lot like actual Danish words, so therefore as a kid I really related a lot to her, then again it was probably just my brain trying to connect the dots and therefore the mumbles sounded like Danish to me, but in any regard until we get anything cannon then pyro will always be Danish in my mind

I remember in 2010, I joked that Pyro was an elderly Japanese man with no teeth. Standing by it lol
here is his background info "Pyro started as a fighter pilot in WWII, then became a firefighter and the owner of a fast food restaurant. After losing his family in a house fire, he drives himself insane, taking out the anger and pain of losing his family by becoming an mercenary".

Alright, here’s a few theories I’ve found on what’s going on with pyro and at the end I’ll offer my own:
Insane human... that’s it.
Insane alien... that’s it.
Government experiment that managed to somehow break out and make the homemade flamethrower, having either becoming a mercenary or just walking onto the battlefield.
Government experiment meant to become one of the greatest weapons for the United States military, it’s currently on loan...
And lastly, my theory:
The Pyro started out as a standard human, although, not from the main TF2 reality. See, I think that Pyro might have originated from the same alternate reality as the space weapons, having been a soldier that had been experimented by some aliens and having escaped by falling through a rift similar to the same ones that the weapons fell through. Pyro eventually was captured by the government of whatever country they landed in, having become an insane lunatic that would attack anything in sight, and were subject to more experiments and some questioning (though not in that order). One day, the government realizes that they can’t really do anything with Pyro, and place them into a thick, almost completely unremovable fire-retardant suit and a mask meant to augment the viewer’s perception of reality, hoping to calm the bloodthirsty wreck of a so-called “human” the Pyro was at that point. And for a little while, it worked. The Pyro was satisfied with this new, though absolutely dull, reality, their mental faculties having been greatly reduced by this point... and then they discovered fire... this spark (yes, it’s a pun) lit up Pyro’s current reality with something new and exciting. So, the Pyro managed to escape their confines and pieced together their own flamethrower, running far away from the government and spread what it saw as happiness and joy.
I don’t really know though, this is just a random thought I had. I’m open to criticism.

Here's my small theory on pyro:
Pyro, wether female or male, was involved in a government experiment. The experiment would be the mask in which he/she wears. The mask, would hijack the brains visual percepors, and project a much less threatening image, when in a threatening situation. The theory being, that this would make it easier to deal with the consequences of combat.
However, during the experiment, something goes wrong. And the mask gets stuck to his/her face, leading to eventual insanity. Knowing what they see isn't what's actually happening, but being able to do nothing about it, would drive them insane. Never knowing what's real and what isn't. Thus, a short time later, (likely a week later) they would escape the facility, in a fluster and rage, and go on about life. Lost, confused, and certifiably insane.
Until one day, a "kind" person, would come along, and offer them a job, something interesting to do.
And that's pyro. Wether male or female. :D
