    My grandfather was a designer for the Dash 8, the Dash 7, and Twin Otter (DH6). I know little--if anything--about aviation. but I do remember him always telling me about these three planes. I have a room full of scale models he would always bring me. These planes and De Havilland in general have a special place in my heart as my grandfather was there for 40+ years...so in a way, it's part of my life. God I miss him.

      That's an awesome story! I grew up flying these planes to visit my grandparents every year since I was born, so I also feel a special connection to these planes. Your grandfather was definitely a very talented designer for making these beautiful planes!

    Major respect for not playing music during takeoff/climbout/approach/landing, love hearing the music of the PW-123A. The Dash 8/Q-series is the sexiest turboprop in existence. I've been on two Dash 8-300s and two Q400s, and I prefer flying on those over a jet. Yeah, they're _that_ good.

    Hey AlexB, the newer Q200, Q300s as well as the Q400s have the "NVS" system, which electronically cancels out a lot of the noise. (GM has it in their trucks now.)
    I retired a few years ago from Bombardier as a "Flight Service Engineer" doing many ground runs on those aircraft.
    One issue that an older [person has is 'Tinnitis" which is a constant ringing or drone in one's ears.
    If you want to listen to what I'm hearing all the time, just listen to the Dash-8 at Idle. (785 RPM.) That's what I hear constantly.

    Caribbean Airlines had these aircrafts and replaced them with ATR's. I can't tell you how much I hate it. The Q300 in particular had a distinct engine sound that I'll surly miss. The ATR is just plain boring to ride. As an aviation enthusiast I prefer the loud cabin and sounds of these engines. The Q400 is just as quiet as the ATR I love this video and the quality of the audio. keep it up😎

    Shortly after landing the captain lets go of the control wheel to place his hand on the steering tiller, I can only assume but I'd say the aircraft is still travelling at 90 to 100kts and for about 4 seconds no one is holding to control column? I am a dash 8 operator in Aus and to me that seems odd, anyone have any thoughts on that? Or had experience with certain operators where this is normal? I'm not having a go at them, just curious.

    • @ArcticPilot
      @ArcticPilot  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the procedure is that the FO takes over the controls around that speed so the captain can control the tiller, but if he's supposed to hold the control column or not I don't know.. What I know for sure is that these pilots also operate the 100-series into some of the worlds most challenging short-field airports, so they sure have a lot of experience!

    • @arinpilot577
      @arinpilot577 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes ur right . At that speed the Captain should control the aircraft with rudder pedals as at high speeds the nose wheel moves 7 left and right with the rudder . So should not use the nose wheel steering ,can cause damage to it.

    • @fsx2100
      @fsx2100 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hector Zambrano yip. The power lever controls the manifold pressure. The prop lever controls the RPM. In GA plane Blue handle - RPM and Black- manifold. But if there is no blue handle black controls RPM. Unless it is computerized

    • @hectorzambrano4092
      @hectorzambrano4092 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      johann botes No wonder why the turboprop airliners always sound idle while taxing and starting up.

    • @Bartonovich52
      @Bartonovich52 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a bit complicated. Power levers control engine torque in Alpha range and blade angle in Beta range. The prop levers will set governed RPM in the governing range, flight or ground idle, feather, and finally fuel cutoff when pulled back. No intake manifold in turbine engines, so no manifold pressure.

      94mafar Man, is it common to disengage the AP so late, like in the footage? I'm mean, clear of clouds, perhaps some turbulence on final, but not significant reason to do so, is it part of SOP?? and late flare ?! And did he miss the touchdown point?

    • @ArcticPilot
      @ArcticPilot  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Helio Macedo Not common i believe.. Widerøe pilots do a lot of hand flying, so not SOP but I guess he just didn't want to hand fly this early in the morning, who knows.. The -300 like the Q400 hardly flares on touchdown so perfectly normal there. About the touchdown point Widerøe pilots often ask for long landings on larger airports to exit the runway faster via the best suited taxiway.

    • @HeliowJuca
      @HeliowJuca 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      94mafar I didn't know about the hard flaring of Q400, that's interesting...And about the hand flying, I asked because I've seen some videos from a brazilian pilot who likes (own preference) to disengage the AP only with runway insight and landing clearance, when the weather allow him to do so, wich is most of the times. Thanks and best regards from Brazil, fly safe ! ;)

Not only that IMO music never can beat the noise in a cockpit and the sounds of the engines, but also, since people have so many different musical tastes you will probably always only please a minority. I'm pretty sure this will be for the costs of likes. Anyway you have got a like from me, for the pictures, not for the music. :-)

      Feather is a position of the propeller blade which has minimum drag e.g parallel to the flow of wind . So that the wind can easily pass through the blades causing minimum drag . Feather position is usually used at starting engine and mainly during engine failure to reduce drag on one engine.
