Greetings from Scotland! This was Diana at 18yo. She is 20yo currently but I've been following her career since she was around 13yo. Diana is a natural Dramatic Contralto so the lower registers are her comfort zone but she has increased her range even more since this. She also naturally sings with polyphonic overtones so it sounds like many voices at the same time! Any song, any genre, in any language, Diana can sing it and improve it! You need a little back story to understand what helped "create" this unique phenomenon:-
Diana's birthmother had multiple miscarriages but when Diana came along, she seemed to hate her. She verbally and physically abused her, trying to drown her and belittle her. It all culminated when (at 3yo) a passing relative found her in her home with a broken collarbone and several other injuries. She went for the authorities who removed Diana from her birthmothers care and placed her in an orphanage. For almost 2 years Diana never gave up hope and she knew that she was meant for something better. (This story is in her Wikipedia entry) Finally her new mother (Irina Ponik, who worked as a masseuse there occasionally) Signed her adoption papers and took her home. She vowed to pay Irina back for her kindness. Irina had a real struggle because Diana had obviously been badly affected by the experiences and at 5yo, she had a very bad stammer. It was recommended that she be taken for singing lessons to help this and immediately it was recognised that Diana had perfect pitch and an excellent ear for music and songs. 1 year later, at 6yo, Diana was performing solo on stage!
This young unique phenomenon sang everywhere and anywhere she could, working constantly to earn money for the family who rescued her. She was already winning every contest in Russia and other countries that she could get to. Then at 14yo Diana took part in an amazing Russian project "You're Super!" for abandoned/disadvantaged children (because Diana spent time in an orphanage) The 1st song she performed shocked the judges and audience so much, it went viral. I’ve hear this cover about a trillion times, especially reactions by professional singers and each time I see how brilliant is this girl and her teachers as I realize each note has been studied and deliberately worked to achieve a specific effect.

I agree that professional opera singers have a particularly developed sense of harmony and know what a large symphony orchestra can produce. A while ago I joked that Diana had swallowed a synthesizer. In addition to the incomparable dramatic contralto with pronounced polyphony, which goes from unimaginable power to velvety softness, Diana already has a pure soprano, and with this arsenal, she works wonders! Added to all this, the huge soul, human kindness and sense of humor, we have a unique artist who spoils the audience and is loved by millions around the world. Great reaction, great comment! I discovered Diana just late last year, on a TH-cam short that piqued my curiosity. It specifically highlighted the final belted section here. I was not prepared for just how much depth she has with her tone, which totally blew me away. In no time I was checking out as many vids and performances as I could find. And far as I know she is the first Dramatic Contralto I have ever heard. The general consensus is that simply no one else has a voice like she does.

This song was my first experience of this vocal phenomenon. She completely blew me away and since has easily become my all time favorite vocalist and have been listening to her and following her since. Just an amazing and breathtaking and unique natural born artist, and that vocal instrament she possesses - there is nothing else like it.

One of her greatest performances on a talent show called YOU ARE SUPPER is a song called RECHENKA. It is so different from anything else I have ever heard. She was 14 years old at the time. RECHENKA is an ancient Russian folk song. Amazing for someone so talented at such a young age. She also did a great job on WICKED GAME also.

These are "Wicked Games", "Dornier Dance", "Rechenka", "Human". If you want to dig into her work further after that, it's easy to find 10-20 songs from a later period.

Really enjoying your analyses of the singers, Dimash, Diana and others. I remember being in choirs and music camps as a kid and the same thing, if you didn't have a pencil you were desperately trying to figure out the next time what the changes/directions were. You should check out Faouzia (Foe-zee-ah) She was self taught vocally, but classically trained with piano, violin and guitar. Her stripped versions are great as they are usually just her and a piano, her 'signature' song is Tears of Gold, but she just released a song called Fur Elise not too long ago (live version has the embellishments). Again, really enjoying the analyses❤❤❤
