    When you listen to Pedro talk about pitching, you realize that while he had plenty of God-given talent, he also was constantly studying and perfecting his craft. He found a way to dominate games after he lost the high-90s heat.

      @@tomcooper6108 you could put in the same amount of work and not achieve the same result.
      It does not diminish an athlete’s accomplishment to acknowledge that he is born with a talent most humans are not.
      Hard work doesn’t give you a 95 mph fastball or a change up like that. Talent does. And talent combined with hard work adds up to a great career.

    Young baseball players now a days are so lucky to have these videos available to learn all these things. Back when I played it was so much experimentation. It would have been great to have all these pitching videos back then.

      Is the best way to learn, for a beginner, to watch youtube videos?

    • @mspionage1743
      @mspionage1743 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nofurtherwest3474 I would say a mixture of both experimentation and watching grips/motion videos. Each player is different as far as hand size and so on, so for any Coach or former player to say there is one sure fire/best way is just folly in my opinion as a former player. If pitching is your goal, you will need to recognize which grips work best for you personally. For example, I threw my curve as a knucklecurve which is rare whereas most pitchers throw it the traditional way. It's just, for me personally, it fit my hand the best to grip it that way. So you have to first learn the basics, probably best from former pros on these modern videos, and then experiment on your own in bullpen sessions to find what works best for you.

      @@mspionage1743 Thanks, my kid is 9 so it is more about him. I played a bit but never pitcher. But he's prob too young to worry about curve balls.
      But in this vid or another one the guy said kids under 12 should only be throwing fast balls and change-ups, so I was looking up what change-up is.
      I'll probably learn these two pitches myself then try to teach my kid. I don't think he has the patience to sit through the videos, but maybe.
      what do you think a 9 yr old should throw - what grip? Their hands are small

    • @mspionage1743
      @mspionage1743 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nofurtherwest3474 At 9 I would say he doesn't exactly need to learn how to throw a changeup but he should learn how to change speeds if that makes sense. There isn't much chance he will be able to throw a circle changeup at 9, however, he can change his speeds with the exact same pitching motion that delivers his fastball, that is key and that is one of the first lessons he should learn in my opinion.

    Do you hold it softer or harder when it’s in your hand or when you release it?

    • @mastod0n1
      @mastod0n1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I pitched in high school I didn't have a great changeup but I'd hold my fastball grip a little softer so that my fingertips could do more work and I'd hold my changeup a little harder so that the base of my fingers and my palm got more involved. Fastball speed comes mostly from the legs, hips, arm and elbow working in sync so gripping it super hard would reduce some of that energy transfer. But with a changeup you want the rest of your body to move the exact same way as when you're throwing a fastball so you have to find other ways to reduce velocity and that comes from the grip. Maybe a little from rotating your arm slightly, depending on what kind of changeup you're going for.
