I love mine as well. Sure, my other cameras (from Canon, Sony, etc.) are more modern and may have better specs, but the E-M10 II is still so much fun to use! And it's tiny!

The E-M10 also has anti-shock mode to eliminate shutter shock. With the E-M10 II, you get silent mode, 5-axis stabilisation and a much brighter OLED EVF, making it super tempting when you find one for a good price used! Both the E-M5 and E-M10 are pretty unmatched when it comes to features for the money.

I second this Emily! I've got the E-M10 II. Such powerhouse. It's got all the bells and whistles of the E-M5, but waaaay improved, minus the weather sealing.
I sold it to get an E-M1 MkII, immediately regretted it. As my partner also had an E-M10 II, I bought a second E-M1 II in exchange of the E-M10 II.

The Em10ii is still one of my go to cameras today, the focus peaking with older prime lenses is brilliant, and the flip down screen for macro focusing is so useful. I have images printed 35" wide from this little gem of a body, great to see our beloved old tech getting a review all these years after their release

Still using the OG E-M5 and I absolutelly love it! It weighs nothing image quality is perfect for even an A2 format. And because of weight I can carry the G85 for the video. Love m43 format.

to me the ABSOLUTE sweetspot in the Olympus range right now is the E-M5 mark II...
It's basically all the advantages the E-M10 has over the E-M5... in a body that has all the advantages of the E-M5 over the E-M10... with a couple more things that in my opinion make it a better EDC !
The first thing to me is that it's a camera that is full of controls. There's buttons everywhere, meaning that you can really set the camera the way you want to and never have to enter a menu again. It has the nice little mode 1 and 2 lever switch that you can customize that is also common in later Olympus cameras (I think it was introduced with the first E-M1 before the E-M5ii?), and it's a really nice addition. I set mine to the stills / video switch that way I can switch to video with only one hand.
Second is the fact that it has a fully articulating screen, which allows for an articulating scren shooting vertical photos, but also to protect the screen from scratches (especially since it's a glass touchscreen) when you throw it in a bag : an absolute must for an every day carry for me
Third is a rather minor detail, but it's the fact that it has a 2.36M dot viewfinder instead of the 1.44M dot that is in the E-M5. Meaning it's detailed enough for you not to care about it, when the 1.44M dot panels are really showing their age.
Price wise, it's obviously more expensive than the original E-M5 or E-M10, but I think it's much more than worth it considering the feature set and build quality. And if you search long enough, you can pick one up for not too much money, I paid mine (which is a Titanium limited endition mind you, not exactly the cheapest E-M5ii around) 500€, coming with a Lumix 14mm f/2.5 and Lumix 25mm f/1.7. Considering the 14mm is worth about 140€, and the 25mm about 90€, I got my E-M5ii body only for right around 270€ (£224) which I think is an absolute steal and absolutely worth it.
Looking at the build quality, I have no itention on getting any other Olympus camera besides the E-M1 line or the Pen-F either ! It was the last full metal E-M5 and they really went all-in with it.
Bonus points for the vertical grip option which shares the power unit (HLD-6P) with the original E-M5, so you don't have to buy the vertical grip twice !
(Edit : the E-M5ii has the "collage" feature on its mode dial as well !)

Totally agree, I had the original EM-5 back in 2012 and upgraded to the MK II however I missed the flip up LCD and the articulating screen actually came apart in my hands, so I had to send back for repair... the prompted my move to the Panasonic GX8 then GX9, which I both sold only to buy the EM-5 II again brand new for £250 in 2020 - totally love the buttons, dials and build quality plus functionality. And yes! It also has all those extra features. The golden nugget of the E-M5 and E-M10 range and it's actually Olympus not OM sushi makers!

Hey Emily - thanks so much for the EM-10 from the competition!
I haven’t managed to get it out yet but I’ve had a play around the house and I genuinely can’t believe how well built and featured that they are (and how tiny they are!!).
I know that everyone raves over Fuji jpgs, but having used a lot of Olympus bridge cameras when I was younger, their jpg engine is 👌
As you say Olympus are definitely filling a gap here with the size of the form factor and as many features packed in.

Hi Emily, I love these kinds of videos... I still want to thank you for suggesting the EM-5 last year. It's the best little camera and has been my EDC since (and I own Nikon full frame if that tells you how much I value small cameras). However, since then I scored an amazing deal on MPB for the E-P2. A little history: In 2005 I started my street photography with a Nikon D50, followed by a D300 and in time, I was of course frustrated because they were way too big. I went to a local shop and I was recommended an Olympus E-P2. I didn't know what I was doing with it back then, so I "upgraded" to a Ricoh GR and that was great for a while ...until the dust issues, faulty lens retraction and abysmal battery life on 3 versions did it for me. I switched to Fujifilm for a long time. Then one day after purchasing the EM-5, I started looking through my catalog. Going back to 2011-ish, I was blown away by the sensor of the E-P2. I had forgotten all about these images. I found the amazing deal on MPB about a month ago and after over 12 years, purchased it again and wow. I'm having a lot of fun!! Olympus has picked up where all other cameras have left me in some way. Between the EM-5 and E-P2, my photography has been invigorated. And these are OLD cameras! I just wanted to share how your videos do impact us in subtle but important ways!

The M10 was the first camera that I really fell in love with due to the ergonomics and ability to make so many adjustments with the camera up to my eye. I replaced it with the M10 Mark II and it is still in use along with my M1 Mark II. I'm considering getting either a M1 Mark III or M5 Mark III, but i won't part with the M10 Mark II! I consider that camera to be a great choice for anyone looking for a great camera on a low budget!

I moved from Olympus to Cuji a while back but I found the Fuji camera/lens combos just too bulky and heavy. Earlier this year I was packing a day pack for a mountain trip and picked up the X-T4 with whatever lens was attached and just thought: I don’t want to spend a day carrying this. Long story short, sold most of my Fuji gear (kept an X-T20 with a manual prime) and spend the last few months buying back the Olympus gear. I always buy 2nd hand so basically paid the same as I had sold it for. Hiking in Montana during the summer made me realise how much I appreciate the Oly set up: compact, light, image quality all it needs to be and a lot of very helpful computational features like the scene modes as well as IBIS. Now using an EM10 ii and an EM 5 ii. Splashed out on a couple of the pro lenses which are definitely worth the extra. Basically I just love Olympus.

Other than being vaguely aware that there is some sort of gradient between EM1, 5, and 10 in terms of premiumness, and the different marks being less or more recent, I've never really understood where the Olympus/OM models sit in comparison to the various Lumix models. At least I'm a bit more aware of the differences between Olympus models.

An excellent to the point comparison. I had the original EM5 and the EM10ii together for a while. I'd say the '10' is clearly a 'better' camera for most people. It has some compelling extra features and I was surprised how much smaller than the '5' the '10' feels in the hand, much more than the close dimensions suggest. Plus, you're right, the jpg's are nicer out of camera, a 'better' camera all round. So naturally I sold the '10' and kept the '5'. I found I didn't need the extra features and the weather sealing was a big plus for me. Somehow the size and shape of the '5' always felt better in my hand and it became an old friend, a highly subjective point. Better may indeed be the enemy of good, but both are excellent cameras.

I think there is quite a jump from the E-M5 and the OM5, have you ever had a try of the E-M5 II? On paper it seems to offer the best both the E-M5 and E-M10 ii for not a lot more money. An articulating screen is a killer for me so all the later E-M's are a no go. A very nice comparison of these old but still very capable cameras. I own both of these cameras (along with an E-M5.3 and E-M1.3) and still use both. While the E-M5 is built a bit better than the E-M10, I prefer the ergonomics on the E-M10. The buttons are spaced better and have a better feel. One additional feature on the E-M10 that you missed was a first curtain electronic shutter which helps mitigate shutter shock. One thing I do like better on the E-M5 is the side mounted memory card door. I hate the bottom mounted memory card access on the E-M10. Image quality wise, I can't really tell any difference between the two. As you noted, both represent an excellent value in today's market and would be great for anyone on a budget or someone who is looking for a small but feature packed everyday carry camera.

Back when the EM5 came out I went to a launch event in Berlin where you could borrow it and shoot in this old factory full of weird installations, stuff with colour and light. One display had an old grammophone too, it was a really fun event. Back then I was shooting an E-PL3 and wished I could afford the EM5 because the viewfinder and the dials made such a big difference. Well, after watching your video last night I ordered an EM10 MK III which is pretty much an EM5 with 4K video. I have a GX80 which is very well matched spec wise but the viewfinder on that is kinda meh and I can't reliably focus manually on it. They will fit in different use case scenarios I think and the Olympus is just so much prettier!

I loved my E-M5 but I just found something you missed out of your top cameras video that made me switch… I just picked up an original E-M1 with a battery grip for £250 from LCE… pristine condition with a sub 7½ K shutter count… I’m over the moon with it. Oh yeah and it also has collage mode!

I love a hiden functionality on EM10 (perhaps EM5 also): we can assign the custom modes to the different positions, like Art or i-Auto that we hardly use, on the dial (up to 3). Love my EM10. Do you think that a purchase of EM10 II is worth?

I bought a used E-M10 i to be a travel camera in 2015 ish but it soon became my main camera up until 2020 when I bought a used E-M1 ii. I did buy a used E-M10 iii at a later date but compared to the first version it felt like they had put in more automation at the expense of everything else so that got traded in last month. I still have the v1 though and it may get brought out of retirement!

When the E-M5 Mk1 came out, their selling point was their IBIS and processor/sensor, which in today's line-up is not much to brag about. I've owned my E-M10 Mk1 for almost 8 years now and I have not been the most gracious of owner. It's lost a lot of rubber parts eg the connector port flap and thumb grip, the screen is fading out at the corners, and the faux leather definitely needs replacement soon and yet the performance of this little guy has not dulled much, except for the LCD screen. If I were to buy a replacement for my E-M10, I'd most likely buy the same exact model or the Mk2. That's how much I love it. 😁

OM Systems still sell the EM10 IV but haven’t changed the name from Olympus. At least in the US we get the EM10 but not any of the current PEN series. I could see OM dropping the EM10 but providing the PEN P series world wide. I currently have the EM10 II and while I did look at the EM5 at the time the price of the EM5 I was very similar to the EM10 II which had some features that I wanted that the EM5 I didn’t have. Great video as always 😊

I got EM5III for about $400 equivallent barely used. Great camera especially with 14-150 or mighty 12-100/4. When I want to stay small, I just grab EPL-6 (with EVF in hotshoe if needed) and small 14-42/3.5-5.6 or 12-50/3.5-6.3.

I love my E-M5: we go on such adventures (with a 25mm f/1.8 Olympus prime thanks for asking). Worth saying it has fast auto focus with 35 focusing points: compare that to a Canon 6D released the same year which has, well, one decent autofocus point. Very much ahead of its time (I love the 6D too).

Hi Emily and everyone! I just got my first camera, a used E-M5 II. I'm new to serious photography and I am having 2 big problems from the get go. The shutter button has a very soft, 'squishy' feel to it. Makes me feel like I am having to 'push' it to take the picture, causing camera movement while I take the pic.. Could the camera be defective? And all the screens time out too fast for me. I need them to stay on longer while I am learning how to use the camera. Is there a way for me to set them to stay on until I decide to change them? Thank you for your help.

The E-M5 mk II brought me to the system, and it has everything the M10 has and plenty for serious photography. They are ridiculously undervalued in the used market. I got an OM-5 (basically for free), and it has a few annoyingly crippled features (can’t tie custom settings to the useless dial positions like you can in the mk II) and the build quality is way lower. Terrible battery life. But it has the 20 MPixel sensor. I wouldn’t recommend it at the price for most people. Mk II or all the way to OM-1.

Olympus menus were really a problem in this period of time : so many options but a real lack of logic. The Panasonic GX7 was a great competitor, the brand had a better vision of an accessible and understandable camera, full of options and customization.

The stabilization mechanism works the same in both cameras, but the difference is in the sensors to detect movement: 3-axis only has a gyroscope, whereas 5-axis has both a gyroscope and accelerometers.

I think I read recently that OM had resumed production of the E-M10 IV. It must be selling. Perhaps the much lower price than the OM-5 has something to do with it? I think the 10 range makes sense. There should be a starter camera that is lower than 800 dollars. Fuji just proved me right... 😉

I became aware of the EM5 when I'd just upgraded my DSLR and couldn't justify changing ecosystems. It was close, though. A digital camera with all the bells and whistles that basically recapitulates the old Olympus film cameras in appearance? Oh man, it was close. But the Pentax system already had weather sealing, IBIS and focus peaking, and a HUGE system of lenses going all the way back to the 70s, so there wasn't quite enough to tempt me away from it.

The only thing with the OIympus cameras that always bugs me is the placement of the power switch. Some have them on the left hand side (which is crazy and impractical if you ask me) and some have them down to the right. I have a Fuji and I just love that I don't have to cramp up my hand just to turn the camera on :D It's just a flick with my index finger. Doing it with my thumb seems kind of uncomfortable.

I had the E-M5 and the GX7 back in the days, and I lked both of them for different reasons. I have to admit that Panasonic did a great job with this one, it was super convenient to use and had plenty of useful features. The E-M5 was (is) prettier, had a tiny advantage when it came to high iso, and felt more robust in hands. The thing that made me prefer the GX7 as an EDC camera was this one hand manipulation that you mention, and then the menus that were more logical and easy to understand compared with the Olympus. But both cameras were solid mirroless options, and I don't know why but I miss the image rendition of micro 4/3 sensors.

I owned the EMD5 and loved the vibrant color output. I donated it to a coworker who wanted to get started in photography. I’ve moved on to LUMIX, especially the G9, GX85 & 9. Then found an EMD1Mii at a good price. It isn’t fair to compare this model to the two models you compared in this video. For a relatively small amount of money it is possible to get a significantly better camera. As is true for any brand, it all depends on your budget and needs.
I miss my EMD5 and am sad I gave it away. To get the same features as my EMD1Mii I’d have to buy an EMD5Miii. That camera costs more than the 1Mii. I love having an EVF and the IBIS on my Olympus is the best implementation of any manufacturer. The OM implementation of new technology has been slow to manifest. Very disappointing. A side note and very minor. The on/off switch on the 1Mii is on the left hand side of the top plate. That is oddly annoying.
There is no doubting that the early iterations of the Olympus line are inexpensive for the feature set they provide. They are also highly performant and a great value for their ridiculously low prices. One can do just about anything photographically with these bodies. The video is only HD as is to be expected. That being said it still looks pretty good. People typically don’t buy Olympus bodies for video.
These Olympus bodies are like the New York Giant’s performance vs The Seattle Seahawks last Sunday.
