Mercedes actually made a rotary car, the Mercedes C111, so a rotary in a Mercedes is not unheard of, so Mercedes does infact have their own Rotary engine. Infact it was a mid mounted three rotor direct fuel injected engine in 1969, and in the 70's they did a four rotor one.
Even I think that Mercedes engine would be great in a '32 Ford or '49 Mercury. The one in the film could have the V8 fitted with a centrifugal supercharger and it could make a great sleeper, even a 60's style super stocker.
The kid in the MB has ability, but I'm beside myself at the engine choice. He could have easily and cheaply slapped in a modern MB turbodiesel and tuned it. That would have outgunned most cars on the road today.

correct mercedes was also the first to make a 6rotor rotary engine (no bs my teacher has a vintage magazine of it)
@alna1287 I agree... to an extent. if modding it like that was his goal, he should've stuck with Honda DNA and fitted in the F20/22C engine
I heard you can get about 5-700 BHP out of the Mercedes V8, so I'd investigate putting a supercharger on that.
