    Hey everyone! Today we'll be checking out the Samyang 50mm f1.4 II for photo on the Sony A7IV and A7III and video on the A7sIII. Oh boy, I definitely have some mixed feelings for this lens as we test out the autofocus accuracy. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

      Julia, I did end up purchasing this lens a few weeks ago, despite your excellent review and demonstrated concerns. While it was slower to find focus initially on each set up than my rokinon 85mm, it did lock autofocus after the initial 1-2 shot lag and I got 99% tack sharp on the iris images with both me and my model moving around a moderate amount, while she turned her head towards and away from the lens. I wasn't doing a real stress test like you do here or challenging myself as much - I am happy I made the purchase because of the relative cost of this lens vs the Sony 50mm GM. For me, its perfect and for the casual photographer its not a complete AVOID.
      You continue to be my go-to creator on youtube for all things photography and I can't tell you how much I appreciate your excellent content.

      I’m confused. If it has a massive focus issue then it’s absolutely lacking in quality so how is it the best choice? It’s a cheap 50/1.4. If budget is your primary concern then maybe you can live with a 1/10 hit rate.

      Samyang lenses often tend to have a slight front or back focus. There are some few methods to test your lens here on TH-cam. I was able to fix my 35mm with the Samyang lens station and now it works fine!
      Edit: nevermind. I have just seen that you already mentioned this 😅

    • @acouragefann
      @acouragefann 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vinceedward9572 A lot of other reviewers did not find the focus issue to the same degree and all my other samyang lenses are performing fine for portrait and even some action - I've shot small birds with the 85mm 1.4 and it nailed the eye plenty of times. So I'm hoping this is just a fault of an early copy or can be remedied with firmware (as has been the case in the past with fx their 35mm)

    It's fascinating to realize that I approach the idea of focus very differently from, I suppose, a lot of other photographers. I exclusively use manual focus lenses, and "in focus" for me is quite a broad range. So I thought every photo you showed was actually spot on. I totally see what you're saying, but it's just funny to realize how two photographers can feel so differently about such a key idea.

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yep I agree! To be honest depending on the $ of the lens, I also have my own opinion on what is considered sharp/good focus accuracy as I understand a more budget lens is not going to focus the same as GM glass. But yeah this right here is another reason I like to share as many unedited photos as possible in my videos. I share my opinions, but you also get to look at the footage to decide if it’s good enough for you.

    • @x_jaydn
      @x_jaydn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can totally get behind this 😂
      I shoot MF all the time, both in daylight, studio light, and low light 😎
      I've formed the opinion that i would only need AF for vlog and/or talking head video

    • @papsny
      @papsny 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      So you buy lenses in the thousands and shoot MF with it or do you use MF on cheap lenses? Good luck shooting manual focus on high paced use cases like weddings and events.

    • @x_jaydn
      @x_jaydn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@papsny I would say that is a bit of an overgeneralized, straw-man argument, but I can definitely understand where you're coming from. 👌🏻
      What I'd say in response is:
      Doing one's due diligence and research on which lenses are good and which lenses are bad - inclusive of both AF and MF lenses; purchase/rent/borrow/bring the correct lens(es) and/or equipment based-on the needs of the shoot.
      ======
      Some shoots needs AF; some shoots don't need AF.
      Some shoots need wide apertures; some shoots don't need wide apertures.
      Some lenses and/or bodies struggle with AF in low light - at which point you'd be forced to use MF mode; some lenses and/or bodies don't struggle with AF in low light. (I shoot low-light photo and video ALOT, and I find that AF can be too unpredictable and hit-or-miss in many of those situations)
      =======
      As for weddings and/or events, it simply comes down to lens choice and event type. Sports photography and bird photography could definitely benefit from a good AF lens, but I still don't think it's 100% necessary.
      For example, I'm sure any well-informed photographer would decide against using a 50mm F1.8 or F1.4 or F1.2 or F0.95 in these situations - regardless of whether it's MF or AF.
      Yes, they'd get good Bokeh and/or background separation, but, I'm sure you know, they'd absolutely interrupt the event with how close they'd be standing.
      Instead, they'd probably want to use an 85mm, 135mm, 150mm, 200mm, 300mm, or 500mm to get further away from the action as to avoid any physical interaction.
      At those focal lengths, you can still get amazing Bokeh and/or background separation even from F2.0 to F8.0 depending on the focal length and the subject's distance from the background behind them, and, of course, if you're shooting that narrow of an aperture, depth-of-field is more forgiving, sharpness increases, and vignetting and/or chromatic distortions decrease. You wouldn't need AF at these apertures.
      As for the exposure triangle, we can compensate with shutter speed and/or, ISO (if not on all bodies, at least on newer bodies like the a7iv with features like Dual Native ISO).
      Alternatively, if they're simply shooting just the pre-wedding/pre-event photos, then any focal length and aperture combination is fair game. 👍🏻
      ======
      I own both AF and MF lenses, but I only find myself using AF lenses when I really, really need it. To add, when I first started shooting, it was strictly with AF lenses, but, in attempting low-light photo and video, it struggled so much. I tried switching to MF mode on these AF lenses, but these electronic MF modes lacked a lot of tactility and responsiveness - leaving me frequently frustrated.
      Eventually, I decided to take it into my own hands and invest in some good MF Potrait/Tele glass (only after having an epiphany/breakthrough following a good experience from buying ultra-wide MF lenses for real-estate photo/video).
      Focusing in MF with a real, tactile, MF lens becomes fast and second-nature (with the caveat being as long as you use the viewfinder and Peaking assist).
      TBH, I now sometimes feel more optimistic I can get the compositions I want - knowing that I can carrying more MF lenses for the same weight and performance as only an even fewer amount of AF lenses.
      Additionally, some MF lenses and body combinations are legitimately just awesome to experience.
      The SAMYANG 85mm F1.4 MF (SONY) definitely claps. I shoot wide-open both high-light and low-light. I am, however, also considering to purchase the AF version (CANON) because I want the optical stabilization and XMF information to be automatically populated rather than manually-inputted, and I want the ability to use rear-of-lens CPLs and/or VNDs.
      I've recently purchased a superb condition, Soviet Union MC Helios 77 M4 50mm F1.8 with an M42 to EF adapter and an AF confirmation chip for only $155 US - the swirly Bokeh is a cool novelty, and, combined with a blue streak filter, it emulates the anamorphic look incredibly well.
      I've also dived-down deep into the rabbit hole recently with industrial lenses and CCTV lenses. I have a modified Insta360 ONE R 4K Module (1/2.3" Sensor) that accepts M12, C, and CS mount lenses.
      I've found so many interesting but, nevertheless, capable lenses ranging from 5g to 300g, with focal lengths anywhere from ultra-wide to ultra-telephoto Full Frame equivalents, some with crazy-wide apertures like F0.95 (which is like F5.0 or F6.0 Full-frame Bokeh but still the exposure of F0.95 lowlight). Many are advertising and actually performing with great sharpness, low spatial distortion, and low chromatic distortions.
      The kicker is that most of these lenses are dirt cheap - $5 to $40 USD for prime lenses ($10 USD on average) and $10 to $120 USD for Zoom lenses. 🔥
      =====
      I'm not claiming that MF is the only choice or the "correct choice". I'm just saying that there are pros and cons to both - whether it be necessity, pragmatism, or, even, novelty. 😎

    I recently bought this lens and found it produces really wonderful images and has ok autofocus. Autofocus is very accurate but It does get odd misses occasionally and struggles noticeable with wide open shooting with close subjects that are moving. Medium distant subjects it can actually track rather well. I don’t think the af is horrible but for close up portraits of anything moving such as children, there’s gonna be some misses. More hits than misses but if you are accustomed to any good focusing glass it’s going to be somewhat annoying. I got mine from rokinon direct for $449 which makes the af issues somewhat bearable. Other issue with af is that in stills mode it is quiet but makes a noticeable clicking noise /vibration when focusing and holding focus. It sounds like a hard drive softly clicking. Never had a modern lens sound like this and it makes the af experience a bit clunky. My Samyang 135mm 1.8 doesn’t do this. I’ve never been so torn with a lens because the images are really nice and the price is right on sale but the lens comes with more compromises than I prefer.

    Also, a 50mm lens comparison would be good as well. Take the 50 1.2gm or 1.4 planar or even the 55mm zeiss. Even if just for the hit rate since the topic mostly discussed is about the AF hit or miss.

    Finally somebody to test this lens :). I am very curious about the version I vs II comparison because I have some expectations now. Also I am very disappointed about the AF of the new one. When I tested the Samyang 45 1.8 I thought - OMG they finally did it and all newer lenses will be able to focus but ... turns out that is not the case.
    The old 50 1.4 which I own for a long time now has this hunting problem with the newer cameras like A7III and A7rIII that started from 2.0 firmware of the cameras. It makes the AF a 50:50 game. Before that - it worked perfectly. I use it only on my old A7rII because the AF there works flawlessly.
    Something else that I noticed in this video, you mentioned that it is harder to focus with those lenses wide open, my experience is different. A7III and A7rIII has difficulties when I focus closed down especially in low light. And the Samyang 50 1.4 AF ver 1 was making it worse because the aperture was slow and it was not able to close down fast enough creating even one more problem - not consistent exposure.

    I wonder if its solely to do with the motor being slow/inconsistent? I have a zeiss 55 1.8 which has the same type of motor, and I had a recent shoot where the camera followed the eye but ended up being focused on the eyebrow or other area of the face. The results looked a lot like this shoot. I was shooting on an a7iv too! I suspect the motor speed might not be fast enough to keep up with the a7iv's new quick focusing system. Additionally, i suspect that the stabilisation can sometimes have a detriment on the picture at very high shutter speeds (all mine were 1/3200 or above). id love to know your thoughts...

      My guess is the "testing/review" done isn't going to answer your question. Waiting on more specific testing on the a7iv myself to know what to make of the upgrades. Also, firmware on both pieces of equipment in this video are definitely in early stages so who knows what we see as bad lens/firmware/camera body.
      Also you're right, some would say to turn off IBIS at those high shutter speeds.

    I don't know how you're so patient with all these people critiquing you without even watching the video. Hundreds of comments from people who suggest you do exactly what you did in the video lol. Your work is stellar with no focus issues using other lenses. You use this lens, focus issues. Sooooo... lens is obviously the problem.
    Solid review, though. I really wanted to get this lens, but I don't think they've got F1.4 down yet. Guess I'll go for the 55/1.8 ZA- tried and true. Unless Sigma surprises us all with the 50/1.4 DG DN that's gotta be coming.

    I have had the lens for a couple of weeks now and had similar autofocus issues at first. For me it was vastly improved when I set the AF sensitivity to 5 (on A7R IIIa), which is the highest setting available. Now it's fine for my purposes, including an erratically moving baby in low light. Still probably a native lens would have better performance here.

      I had mine set to 5 responsive as well. Also just to get back to some of these other comments, I understand this isn’t an expensive, high end lens. When I review more affordable lenses I review them in relativity to the price. I’ve uploaded plenty of affordable lens reviews where there are some missed focus photos but it’s still a good ratio. This lens was a very different experience for me in terms of that vs other lenses in a similar price range.

      Hey Julia, I just took some test shots outside yesterday. I was being very nitpicky about critical focus and found that focus missed 5 out of 60 times, which I consider absolutely acceptable for a second party lens. Maybe you got a bad copy in some way? I got mine about 3 weeks ago and it’s really good. Just as good as my 35 & 85 f1.4 Samyang lenses. It must be the quality control not being as good for all the lenses. Because mine just focuses awesome. I took photos of a ballerina and use my Sony a9 and a7riv and it did great on both of my cameras. And the ballerina was moving all around jumping in the air. You don’t always have to shoot at F1.4 either. But using high speed sync and a fast enough shutter speed it work great. Interesting! I recently ordered this lens for my A7IV which is my first full frame and noticed the same things. Auto focus is hit or miss. When it works it takes really good photos when it doesn’t it can be annoying especially for its price. The focus being slow is also something I noticed in video, it’s trying to be cinematic and reduce focus breathing but sometimes you just want that quick focus and it never gives it to you.
    Now I’m considering returning it for the zeiss 55mm 1.8 which you can now get for the same price as this Samyang lens

      @@ficklampa There wasn’t a firmware update available when I got it but updating the firmware would mean buying a dock which is like 70 euro here to do so. If I buy a lens I expect it work out of the box and not have to pay for an accessory to download a firmware update. Just a waste of time and money. I ended up exchanging the samyang lens for the zeiss and it’s amazing, photos are much sharper than the Samyang, bokeh is great, autofocus is consistent and fast, it’s smaller and lighter and you can get it second hand for much cheaper than the Samyang or the same price if you buy it brand new. I have a feeling that the focus accuracy might be more related to the camera (specifically a7iv) than the lens. My business partner has had 4 copies of the a7iv and has been having problems with the focus accuracy even on native lenses. Images are noticeably soft. We tested each of the the a7iv’s against my 2 a7iii’s and a7siii and the focus accuracy was much more accurate on the a7iii and a7siii. I think there is a problem with the A7iv eye auto focus that hasn’t been very widely reported on. Sony has not had the greatest response in our attempts to address the issue with support. Any one else have similar findings?

    The eye should be in focus is a generally agreed point. Whether eyelashes or retina is open to discussion. My goal as an amateur is to place the focusso that it looks good. Might be a point which does not necessitate too much make-up and editing! Does that make sense to anybody??
    Coordination between body and lens is a challenge to any third party lens. So your reservation about the AF performance seems most plausibel. I would not exclude that the "good" 85mm Samyang might show the same AF problems on other bodies - again a theory open to discussion
