7:10 - I have the Samyang and to be fair, that orange/blue aberration can get heavy at times, and hard to remove if you have blue/orange colored elements in the scene. Thanks for the great review.
These two seem really close to each other in performance and image quality. Thought reading comments here from owners, the Samyang has issues with AF. I have the Samyang 35, 75mm and 135 lenses and honestly they focus well. Maybe a tick slower than my Sony lenses but my style of shooting, not an issue at all. This 50mm is tempting as the price is very attractive currently.
Just a heads up I bought the Sony at Digidirect for $1784. Absolutely loving it after having the Zeiss 55 1.8. I sold it & the 135 1.8 GM since that became redundant after purchasing the 70-200 GMII earlier in the year.
I bought thte Rokinon 50mm f1.4 series II for less than $450 US. Its a great lens even if it was 3 times the price which is what the Sony is costing. I cant see why anyone would dump $1300 for the f1.4 of $2000 for the 1.2 when the Samyang/Rokinon gices you 98% of what the Sony gives you. I updated the firmware and use this lens on a Sony A7RV and A7IV and it never misses focus for me. I havent experienced any AF issues, so Im not sure what the others are referring to.
As an owner of the samyang 50mm 1.4 ii lens, i must say these are my main issues with af and the lens in general 1) slow auto focus for photo and worse autofocus for video 2) unreliable af for video, its a hit and miss 3) lens loses focus in video and then completely stops trying to auto focus 4) lens occasionally hangs the camera The is currently no firmware update for the lens
In my case, samyang at 1.4 its very soft and seems like blur for far object like 5 meter or more and AF slow and sometimes hunting even when i tried on A7siii. The tracking sometimes missed
@samuelalexander321 the lens dock you can micro adjust the af. Incase it is off centre. It happened with one of the samyang lenses so I adjusted it so it is centred and the image is sharper
Lately I've been finding the Samyang lens struggling with AF of moving subjects so am back to considering the GM lenses despite the cat eye bokeh. I'd love it if you could do a review comparing the f1.4 gm to the f1.2 gm, especially the bokeh such as the example of the action figure and fairy lights in this video. It would also be great if you can compare with both lenses wide open, and then again with both lenses at f1.4 as I think stopping down the f1.2 to f1.4 will reduce some of the cat eye bokeh.
I just bought a Sony 50 1.4GM and randomly put an image captured by that lens into a shutter count software, then it reads out as a Samyang AF 50 1.4 FE...... WTH???
@@HRImages call it however you like. its faulty. check 10:05min - you should never have a corner like this on f8 with 50mm on a plane image-field. it may not concern you while shooting portraits ofc..
I agree, very noticeable on the "full body" example. I think I'll ben keeping my Samyang, to a large part the minor difference in sharpness can be recovered in post (I don't concern myself with the edge sharpness on lenses like this as the subject is usually more central) but you can't affect rendering.
@@Snerkler1 the Samyang has slightly more chromatic aberration. That's perhaps one con that may be visible in real life scenario, but barring that, it's great.

Very interesting comparsion, thanks! I especially like that you have included low light testing & comparsions, very important for me. Cheers!

Thank you 😊

The is currently no firmware update for the lens
For video work I have been relying on the new V-AF lenses. For firmware I am pretty sure there was one.
Mine doesn't have slow AF for stills, maybe it's Samyang's infamous QC?
Yeah you probably got a bad copy. I've never had these issues
No issues with my Sony 50mm 1.4 GM. It’s why I invested in it for pro work
It depends how you use the lens
You can't remove LoCA buddy 7:40 Lateral CA is very easy to fix on the other hand. Sony has camera corrections for LoCA that's why we pay premium
Great Samyang lens...thank you!

Huh? You brought the 50mm GM and the software reads samyang 50mm? Which software?
@@HRImages I was shocked too! It’s called ‘shutter count for camera’ and it’s on a Mac
@xiaoqiu4946 what about when you have it in lightroom to see the exif data

Skintones from Samyang better , GM a bit sharper
your samyang is decentered.. this corner at f8 is very unlikely.

Sony has more cats eyes perhaps because it has a smaller diameter.
