Each row of teeth is a quarter thousandth or so bigger than the last, going more and more into the corners, and it is usually pushed in a press, There are also rotary broaches that are deliberately misaligned with the hole they are broaching, and as the part and the tool are turned in the lathe, successive corners receive pressure in turn and are cut. That's one way to make socket head screws in the home workshop. The most liberating skill of all, for the home machinist, is the making of specialized tools for special purposes. With a little high carbon steel and your imagination, you can make the stuff you need to make just about anything else.

I made it to open up handles for tools and knives. It is a good tool for making a hidden tang knife slot (something I plan on doing in the future).
