    Great stuff as always. I converted a small keyhole saw to a very thin broach, but need to make a thicker one. Think that'll be a forging project rather than use up bar stock on it. As always though, got some great tips. It's a joy to watch you work.

    You may find it easier for the coke bottle shape, by using an 8 inch or 10 inch contact wheel for the back to palm shape. Just a thought.

      @@RedBeardOps I use minimal power tools, an 8" and a 6" bench grinder and a 1" and a 6" belt sander. But I have made some tools. My leather punch and a few small chisels. I have some old screwdrivers, I think I will use one of them for a broach

  • @MrSoloun
    @MrSoloun 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good video and good tool. Doesn't having 2 teeth at the front so close increase the likely hood that you will have materials jammed between requiring you stop and clean it as you shown? Or does 1 tooth leave the material inside the hole? I wouldn't know, I'm just curious.

    • @RedBeardOps
      @RedBeardOps  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Man I don't know. No science to going with two teeth. For what it's worth Kyle Royer's only has one tooth! It made decently fast work of the handle I tested it on though!

  • @MVCompassRose
    @MVCompassRose 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What is a good thickness material to use? Most of my knives are either 3/16 or 5/32 so anything smaller than the 5/32?? Or should I use that same size as you thinned the stock behind the cutting head?
    Thx!

    • @RedBeardOps
      @RedBeardOps  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Man I'm probably not the best person to ask for hidden tang knives. I've only made a handful. I'll say that I think smaller would be better. You want to be able to get the broach into the holes you drilled and start clearing out material. If it's too big you'll get stuck a lot. In reality I think it would be best to have a few different sizes...

    Fun project! Really nice job! Question: I've made a few, but not nearly as nice, but they only have one tooth. I noticed in the video the wood gets caught between the two teeth, and at the angle you are pulling it, it seems only the furthest tooth is engaging. On my single tooth ones, the shaving just form a curl that drops out of the hole. Do you find the two teeth helpful, or do you have to stop and clean the shavings, etc.?

    • @RedBeardOps
      @RedBeardOps  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Daniel, I'm not sure, but I think the 1 tooth design may be slightly better. There was no thought out reason I went with two. Have a great week!
