- In response to last year's Gaza conflict, the Israeli government announced the construction of further settlements in the West Bank - a move condemned by the international community for escalating tensions that were already highly fraught.
The expansion of the settlements has consumed privately owned Palestinian land, causing the destruction of Palestinian homes, produce, and livelihoods. Despite Israeli settlements taking up only one percent of land in the West Bank, they now exert control over 42 percent, with settlement boundaries often 10 times larger than the settlements themselves.
VICE News traveled to the West Bank to speak to displaced Palestinians and activists who are trying desperately to address the grievances that boiled over with such horrific consequences in 2014.

A lot of comments here disgust me. They are written by people who have never set foot in Israel / Palestine / Jerusalem, and who think they know all. The situation is extremely complex, and certainly not black and white. I was somewhat pro-Israeli before moving to Jerusalem, but then my views changed as I was confronted with the reality of the situation, and ultimately it is a very natural feeling to support the people who are being oppressed - the underdog. I want a two state solution, and I support the Palestinians in their struggle for their rights and their land. Long live Palestine.

The "who was here first" argument is an extremely weak one. If its to be used, then you have to also apply it elsewhere meaning that every single nation in the Americas founded by Europeans is to be handed back to the the people who were there. And I'm sure before the Europeans there were many lands taken among the natives themselves. This starts a cycle that goes back all the way to small villages in Africa. We must look at the situation in regards to recent events and international agreements. The damage was done decades ago, yes, and borders were established. Today, these borders are being ignored by Israel. This is the root cause of the endless violence. (Well, frankly the root cause is religion all together, but that's a more difficult issue to address)

It says that Israel is forbidden to forcfully relocate people to the conquered territory, which they dont do. I know it sounds stupid but technically they dont break laws regarding relocation. East Jerusalem is recognized by the international community as still part of the palestinian west bank? How could that be--before Israel took control, it was Jordanian (who were occupying it illegally themselves).

However, Israeli citizens are moving into Palestinian lands and building small settlements there, and the Israeli Defence Force protects them. Now, tell me what would you do if your people are becoming extinct? What you do if every year, your country is losing more and more of its land? Would you wait until they reach your house and then demolish your home? Or would you try and push them back to the borders the United Nations set.

I've been an American my entire life. And if Americans were under the constant encroachment and enforcement that the palastinian people have endured...we here in the U.S. would be far more vicious and underhanded than any Israeli or palastinian ever could be. We seek violence and brutality for mere daily entertainment. Our prime time and highest rated television series even involve brutality and flesh eating. It is wise to keep us sedated.
It's difficult to judge those who stand where we would never even consider ourselves to be. But if we were generations born around confict, ruins and blood, we(american citizens) would be one of the most ruthless tribes on the planet.

In 2000 at Camp David 2, they were going to get 93% of West Bank back, and back then there were a lot less settlements. Arafat refused and started an Intifada, hoping to trigger another Arab Israeli War.
What happened in Gaza? Israel completely ended the occupation, and even destroyed all their settlements there. After they left the Palestinians to self govern themselves, they elected Hamas, a group that has vowed the destruction of Israel.

Also, pay attention to the discrepancy of technology available to the belligerents in the vid... I think that says a lot about who is in control, and who the aggressor/oppressor is in the situation as a whole. Israel is encroaching into UN designated Palestinian zones, breaking international law. The rock throwing is _retaliation_ in this case. It's difficult to claim any sort of moral high ground when actions like this are being taken, don't you think?
