Very detailed and thorough video, well done! 3.9 Open diff to an 86/BRZ 4.1 Torsen LSD on my Toyota Crown made a world of difference, can't imagine 3.26 to 3.76! Anything shorter would be ridiculous on the GS400
Thanks! I know a few guys that went 3.92 and they claim it isn’t that bad. I felt like my chances of finding a diff in great condition and with low mileage were much better going JDM 3.77.
Your attention to detail and organization while working through each job are really impressive. 💯 This looks like it's gonna be a PITA on jack stands but I think I can do it. 😁 Really like your direction with this build. Its the right mix of practicality, sportiness, and conscious budget IMO.
Awesome step-by-step video on swapping diff's on a GS400! I've done this in my driveway more times than I'd prefer, and I have nothing much to add. When I bought my $300 junkyard rear diff (came of an LS400), I opened her up and measured the backlash and runout, and found they were within factory specs. Not that I would've done anything different if the measurements were a little off. I love how an old, dirty gear box can look so clean and shiny on the inside! Watching your clean, meticulous video was exciting, and I'll try to not write another book! I'm glad you didn't forget any of the companion flange bolts too, lol! Driving my GS with all 6 bolts in the front flange (versus 5) has been quite nice, as all of the nasty vibration modes and odd tapping noises are gone. I recently installed a dual electric exhaust cutout system, located in the bend in front of the mufflers. When they are "open", the cutouts are not as loud (nor sweet) as when there were only cutouts (no mufflers at all; how it was when I bought the car). Probably b/c the electric cutouts only open the shorter route, but they don't close the longer path, so some of the pressure still goes through the mufflers. I may install shorter resonators like you did, to compensate for this problem. I also have the same grey/tan interior as your GS, and I'm lucky that mine came in a similar super-clean condition! My GS came with the ancient Nakamichi touchscreen navigation system, which also controls the HVAC. I discovered that I could pull the entire system, and buy the standard HVAC controller module (the one you have at the top of your center console), and install a double din android stereo where the navigation system was, to upgrade to a modern nav/multimedia system. Both the plastic stereo trim kit, and the fake wood sticker on the HVAC controller, were not worthy, so I laminated both with real burled walnut veneer and an 1/8" of clear table top epoxy (the 2nd attempt turned out dope!). Now the rest of the factory wood trim looks inferior, dough! I also replaced the LED's behind the HVAC controller (half were burned out). I used "WLJH 10x Green T4.2 Neo Wedge Led 3030 Chipest 10mm". Then I replaced the OEM interior lighting bulbs with white LED's (9LEXGS30098-05W), which made a huge difference (I didn't know how much I hated the yellow incandescent interior lights!). You'll also need these for the 2X under-dash lights: WLJH 6x T5 LED Wedge Bulbs Canbus Error Free 74 73 17 Extremely Bright White 3030 Chipsets. I know most of this has nothing to do with your awesome rear diff swap, but I want to give a little back to the GS community, and I'm honored to drop it here :) Stay awesome Bud!
Lots of great info man thank you very much.Have been wanting to do a lot of the mods you just mentioned and now it’s way easier.I have a tan interior champagne exterior 98 gs400 with 200k
Indeed, it's annoying how few videos do that. Not everyone can find or access the FSMs to find this info and some of them are so difficult to search through if you can.
Great video!! Lots of useful information. I really like how you take the time to clearly explain what you are doing and why. Most of the other automotive youtube channels would just speed through the install with music then cut to doing donuts and burnouts with no actual information.
BRZ/FRS/86 LSD is direct fit on first gen IS300's you just have to use a step bit to slightly drill the bottom of the bushing because the IS300 bolts taper at the end and the BRZ bolts don't
Bolts unexpectedly coming out fast like that (plus the risk of snapping heads off) is why I got into the habit of starting on the lowest impact setting and working my way up until the bolt loosens. Nice job though, only thing I would have done extra would be take the opportunity to upgrade to polyurethane bushings while the diff was off the car as it would be the perfect time. Also thanks for providing torque values, DIY videos so rarely bother to.
Christian I love the channel.. heres another Avenue for gs400 430 diff swap.i bought an SC300 (4.27 ratio)diff at a pick a part junk yard for 130 dollars and had it welded... instead of swapping companion flange and running the risk of messing up preload and backlash just buy the back half of a gs300 driveshaft and its splined the same as gs400 430 fron half so it slides right together at slip joint ..easy easy and only about 250 dollars with everything... 4.27 gears made the car a different beast....I'm building for my 16 yr old son .. love your videos...
As an SC owner i know our Diff options as they are bolt in for the 2gs. 91-97 SC400 is a 3.91 same diff as GS300. SC300 manual is 4.08. SC300 auto is 4.27. 98-00 SC400 is 3.26. I am working on a budget LSD solution for the SC/GS. Currently doing the testing now.
I was just having to source a new diff for my Soarer since it's making noise. The 4.08 is common to the Soarer TT, manual SC300, and 93-95 GS300. I got my new diff out of a 94 GS300. This video will be helpful for that swap too.
Probably the best video I've seen very detailed I've got 2001 gs300 looking into swapping with a 3.26 diff to lowering rpm on highway and possibly increase mpg
You should state your camspecs, and gear the diff according. On my "project" IS300, i foud a lsd diff at a pull-it and bought a Tacoma 3.58 r/p and had it installed. The IS300 is a little piggy for its size. So going for a cam with a peak of around 5200-5500. That'll be great for all round torque curve, and way better mileage than the 2j dog.
Stock cams (4) and 3.7 as mentioned in the vid. Most my viewers have zero desire to screw with a r/p swap and are looking for an easy, budget swap instead. 3.5 would be a sweet spot on the 1UZ, but it’s so close to 3.7 that swapping the entire 3.7 diff is easier and more economical.
Congrats on the swap. Can most definitely see a gain in acceleration. The link you provided for this Aristo TT i couldn't find find that he had more. Looks like you may have gotten the only one. Any thoughts on other diffs? Did you consider the Supra TT LSD? You mentioned price so I am guessing not, i think they run north of 1k
Thanks! Try giving them a call. They might be able to source one. The Supra LSD runs nearly $2K so yeah, way too much and not necessary with my power levels right now.
Nice work! Hey I noticed when your GS was in the air, it seems like the inside of your tires are wearing faster than the outside..is that because the spacers?
Just found your channel to find more information on differentials. I have an IS300, so most of this is similar but not exact. I just came in to ask what kind of floor do you have in your garage? Looks nifty. Enjoy the video, so I subscribed.
Been following your channel like what you're doing. I did find that CBS Racing makes a torsen limited slip for the 200mm diff. I got one for my gs but it got wrecked before I could put it in. I think the limited slip would be a must if going to a more aggressive rear gearset the added traction would get you out of the hole much harder. I already leave the peg leg with a stock engine and I wanted to add ported heads and a set of cams. Keep up the good work!!!
A 4.27 diff sure does exist. I have a N/A Supra LSD 4.27 in my GS. I have not driven the car as it is not ready to drive. But i'm sure 1st gear will be useless. Need to figure out if a GS300 ring and pinon gears swap over.
I´m about to swap a Supra Torsen 4.09 diff into my Aristo, so this is very helpful :) Thank you for the great information and showing us everything. The speedo is based of the ABS sensor´s right? Therefore it´s not off, if you change the gear ratio?
Good content Sir!! Can I ask about your mud guards cause I need a set! I've been looking and haven't seen anything online about them. Do you have any clues? Thanks man
Last digit of the axle code from the donor vehicle will be a “B” if it has a LSD. That or removing the rear cover and looking at it. Otherwise you’re putting a lot of trust in a seller.
Are there numbers on the actual differential to verify gear ratio? I bought one used and before I do all the work I want to make sure that I have a 300 diff
You will have to take the diff cover off OR count the revolutions of the output shaft(s) / cups carefully. If I recall, 1 rotation of the driveshaft and then watch as the output cup goes around, but it’s going to be really hard to see a .5-.7 rotation difference that way.
I definitely considered it. My friend who has experimented with it advised not to because it made little difference on his and increased NVH. That would be the time to do it, no argument there.
The 3.77 diff with the manual is insane. It revs up quick. However, I cannot say what the 3.27 would be like because I never ran that diff with my MT swap. I did the diff swap before I went manual. 👍
That’s going to be a crazy difference. I don’t even recommend it. But if you must, I believe it’s just swapping the entire thing and the companion flanges out.
I travel mostly 60-70mph highways, so I'm not in terrible shape. May lose a few MPGs. I'll just let the wife know it'll go faster, but forget to mention the MPG factor. Lol
Correct. You should plug that into an online calculator. That’s going to turn a crazy RPM at 70MPH compared to the 3.2. Anyway, it’s your car. If that’s your thing, go for it. 👍
Yes, top speed is much more than 120 with the 3.77. Assuming the tire diameter in the rear is the same, all you need is the A650 5th gear ratio, diff ratio and engine redline to figure it out.
I have my gs300 2004 hit 202k miles now, I def wanna make it last pretty long any advice on what I should do? I been doing the rotations and oil changes every 5k on the dot.
Have the Lower Ball Joints been done? If not or even if you don’t know, do them immediately. OEM or Senkei 555’s seem to have the best reviews. Aside from that, follow the LEXUS maintenance intervals and you should be good!
@@02maddman unfortunately not. It was custom done. Mine is for sale if you’re interested. As mentioned in the video and description, IPT will also mod a VB, and John is a good guy. Basically, my VB has everything done to it that IPT will do. I’ll be selling my modded VB for $350 shipped in the lower 48.
Have you had any transmission issues in general?I just put my timing belt on my 200,000 mile 98 gs400 on the 1rst but my transmission neutrals out intermittently
Yes, mine started crapping out a few years ago, which is why I manually swapped it. At first R would be delayed by 5-10’seconds on a cold start. Then it started slipping at WOT. So long AT!
@@ForwardMomentum was the manual swap a nightmare?Im about to hop on your video for the manual swap but I’ve watched it before you’re the absolute best channel for gs400 information.cartunez in New Zealand has great videos for diagnosis on 1uzfe/ecm harness/immobilizer delete and other good bits for us jdm enthusiast’s .
Agreed, Kelvin is great. Good info on his channel. Not gonna lie, the MT swap was a lot of work and expensive; more so now with inflation. If I didn’t have the YT channel I probably would have thrown a used AT in and purchased a purpose-built factory manual car. But it’s a lot of fun and now that it’s supercharged it rips around pretty well.
Yes, it’s quicker. 0-60 is a bad measurement because 2nd tops out at 58 with my 3.77 diff. 1/4 mile might be a better measure. I’ll do that eventually.
@@ForwardMomentum Did you ever get acceleration numbers with both diffs to compare? Your channel has helped me save lots of time and research building my own GS. Thank you!
You can use an online calculator to figure out the difference. You didn’t say what you currently drive, so I don’t know what you have and what you want to go to. 2GS GS300: 3.9, GS400/430: 3.2, Aristo TT: 3.7.
0-60 isn’t a good measure because with this diff the 2-3 shift must occur prior to 60, unlike when it had the 3.27. I can assure you the car was much quicker from a dig under the exact same circumstances. It felt like the car shed 100-150lbs. Best way I can describe it.
Generally speaking, yes. However I only lost about 15-20 miles total per tank. It really didn’t change that much. Instead of 300mi per tank I get about 280-290.
Yeah, lots of rumors out there. Typically it’s from crappy tuning. Then the ring lands go and then other stuff. Everyone likes to focus on the size of the rods, which certainly come into play at some point, but with a safe tune these can handle 6-8psi easily.
It made a very noticeable difference in acceleration. Unfortunately it pushed my old tranny over the edge and fried a couple clutch packs. So I manual swapped it. 😎
@@ForwardMomentum how many miles did your trans have and why would it fry? And it fried it with the shift kit? My trans is rebuilt with new clutch packs. Think I should be good and I also have to install the shift kit?
The diff acts as a force multiplier, so the only thing I can surmise is that it was on the edge of going out for some time. 166K miles. It shifted perfectly otherwise, but WOT acceleration resulted in a noticeable 1-2 slip and occasionally 2-3 if I held it that long. I guess there’s a chance it was the TC, but now I’ll never know. 🤣
Define “really cheap.” I’m guessing no cheaper than the $250 I spent on this one. Locking diffs suck around turns anyway. I’m trying to keep this thing as OEM+ as I can.

Looking to swapp differential in gs300 with a sc300 diff
Does your car have a phone? Or what are those controls for on the steering wheel?
It does! The original phone. The network of course no longer works, but it still turns on and makes funny 90’s noises at start up. 🤣
@@ForwardMomentum That’s pretty cool, I didn’t know there was an option for a phone in the GS
Good content Sir!! Can I ask about your mud guards cause I need a set! I've been looking and haven't seen anything online about them. Do you have any clues? Thanks man
Thx. They are universal NAPA flaps that I cut to fit. I’ve had them for 8 yrs now. No link sorry!
thank you
Where is the link to purchase the LSD differential that you used in the video?
I didn’t use an LSD in the vid. That’s an open diff. Stay tuned though, I have an LSD vid in the works.
what do you have to look for one the vin to know if it has an LSD ARISTO 3.77
Last digit of the axle code from the donor vehicle will be a “B” if it has a LSD. That or removing the rear cover and looking at it. Otherwise you’re putting a lot of trust in a seller.
Would a LSD From a mk4 Supra fit???
I believe so, but the diff is often $3K-$5K if you can even find one.
Are there numbers on the actual differential to verify gear ratio? I bought one used and before I do all the work I want to make sure that I have a 300 diff
You will have to take the diff cover off OR count the revolutions of the output shaft(s) / cups carefully. If I recall, 1 rotation of the driveshaft and then watch as the output cup goes around, but it’s going to be really hard to see a .5-.7 rotation difference that way.
just curious while you had the diff out you didn't consider doing some solid or poly diff bushings ?
I definitely considered it. My friend who has experimented with it advised not to because it made little difference on his and increased NVH. That would be the time to do it, no argument there.
Did you have to change the drive shaft to fit the new differential? Is that a thing?
No. Every required step is in the video. The exception, as noted, would be the companion flange difference between the GS3 and GS4 diffs.
❤❤ gracias 🙏
Any lsd solutions for gs300s without breaking the bank?
Not really. Unless you score a used one that was priced wrong, it’s going to be expensive.
@@ForwardMomentum :'T
Hey just want to know how is the 3.76 ratio compered to the 3.26 with the manual transmission?
The 3.77 diff with the manual is insane. It revs up quick. However, I cannot say what the 3.27 would be like because I never ran that diff with my MT swap. I did the diff swap before I went manual. 👍
What size are the tires
245/40/18
So I have lucked out and scored a working SC400 4.27 diff in my garage. What all do I need to make it work in my 2000 GS400?
@forward momentum
Lol
I should be able to just move the companion flanges over from my stock diff, correct?
Correct. You should plug that into an online calculator. That’s going to turn a crazy RPM at 70MPH compared to the 3.2. Anyway, it’s your car. If that’s your thing, go for it. 👍
how much top speed did you lose i want to put a 4.27 in my 99 LS
Just use an online calculator and you can figure it out. That’s a drastic change (if yours is 3.2 currently).
Why is the speed 80 RPM 3.000?
Because I swapped the diff.
He went from 3.2 to 3.7 diff ratio. This is great for acceleration but, will add a few more revs on the freeway.
Then the acceleration will be from 0 to 120 only, and not to 155
Yes, top speed is much more than 120 with the 3.77.
What diff would you suggest to improve acceleration for the GS 300?
4.27 might be the only readily available option that makes a noticeable difference.. I believe the SC300 had that ratio, but don’t quote me on that.
How much your MGP changed after this mod? Or you did not felt the difference?
MPG change was very small. Went from 18.75 to 18.60.
What lift do you have?????
Setting up and using the STRATUS mid rise lift (MS9000E). Spoiler: I'm impressed!
th-cam.com/video/8UF7Yruiy98/w-d-xo.html
does doing this totally limit the top speed or could you still hit 150 if you tried with that lsd
It’s not an LSD. But as to your question I don’t know because I never tried to hit top speed with the 3.7 diff.
Awesome video, what valve body upgrade do you have?
Thanks! There isn’t really a name for it. The entire VB was worked over to strengthen and speed up shifts.
@@ForwardMomentum did you send the trans out?
@@02maddman no, the VB gets removed from the trans, worked over, then reinstalled.
Can you link me to whomever did your work?
@@02maddman unfortunately not. It was custom done. Mine is for sale if you’re interested. As mentioned in the video and description, IPT will also mod a VB, and John is a good guy. Basically, my VB has everything done to it that IPT will do. I’ll be selling my modded VB for $350 shipped in the lower 48.
Where did you get your valve body upgrade? Need one bad!!
My friend built it. I recommend IPT.
@@ForwardMomentum I think to get any more power out of your car than what you have would be cams or methane
Well headers are next, then LSD. That should put me about 425 crank HP.
How do think the 4,27 ratio diff would have worked for you in the auto trans?
It would have been too much. I can’t imagine what RPM it would turn at highway speeds.
Is it actually quicker or just go through the gears quicker in shorter time? Like is 0-60 quicker ?
Yes, it’s quicker. 0-60 is a bad measurement because 2nd tops out at 58 with my 3.77 diff. 1/4 mile might be a better measure. I’ll do that eventually.
@@ForwardMomentum Did you ever get acceleration numbers with both diffs to compare? Your channel has helped me save lots of time and research building my own GS. Thank you!
@@chaseteter I’m sorry I haven’t yet. Since supercharging I have new issues, like my clutch slipping. I’ll fix that soon. 👍
and did doing this make both of your tires spin ?
It made them easier to spin.
Omg at track iv done it just by pushing it up...
does this swap work for a 430
Of course. If it’s a 2GS 430.
Can you point out a source that willing to ship sc300 4.27 diff?
Sorry, I am not aware of one. You just have to hustle it online until you find one.
What’s the difference in performance if I put aristo diff over gs300
You can use an online calculator to figure out the difference. You didn’t say what you currently drive, so I don’t know what you have and what you want to go to. 2GS GS300: 3.9, GS400/430: 3.2, Aristo TT: 3.7.
@@ForwardMomentum I got the same gs400
The 3.7 is great. Really woke mine up when I was auto.
0-60 time difference?
0-60 isn’t a good measure because with this diff the 2-3 shift must occur prior to 60, unlike when it had the 3.27. I can assure you the car was much quicker from a dig under the exact same circumstances. It felt like the car shed 100-150lbs. Best way I can describe it.
Are you still running this diff?
Yes.
@@ForwardMomentum Awesome
Will the Aristo TT fit the 2002 GS430?
It should.
so with higher revs on the highway does that mean worse mpg?
Generally speaking, yes. However I only lost about 15-20 miles total per tank. It really didn’t change that much. Instead of 300mi per tank I get about 280-290.
@@ForwardMomentum thanks for always replying man this channel is a huge service to the lexus community
Ive heard of people differentials exploding on gs430s easiest aint always the best
Ok?
@@ForwardMomentum engine not differentials my bad they handle speeding rpms
Yeah, lots of rumors out there. Typically it’s from crappy tuning. Then the ring lands go and then other stuff. Everyone likes to focus on the size of the rods, which certainly come into play at some point, but with a safe tune these can handle 6-8psi easily.
We have the same cars lol I think. I got a Lexus Gs300 follow you from the FB group / and a Honda Pilot AwD
How funny! The Pilot is very reliable but not very exciting. I hate driving it. 🤣
Is it a lot quicker with that gear? I just bought a 3.92 gs300 diff for my 99 ls400. A little nervous of rpm at 80.
@@ForwardMomentum what do you mean could of been the tc? Traction control was interfering somehow or you were spinning the in between gears?
Torque Converter. 😎
Just got my gs 430 what do u think I should do to it it’s stock right now!
Maintenance items first. Lower ball joints should be #1. Once maintenance is in order and you want to mod it, it really just depends on your style.
@@ForwardMomentum I’m tryna make it fast any tips

Already sold it a month ago to a Supra guy.
@@ForwardMomentum must be CD swapping a supra?
No idea. He drove a decent distance to get it. Money talks. Got $100 for it.
No bs
You could of put a locker in it for really Cheap
Define “really cheap.” I’m guessing no cheaper than the $250 I spent on this one. Locking diffs suck around turns anyway. I’m trying to keep this thing as OEM+ as I can.
This is one of those awesome mods that nobody ever thinks of. Although 2500rpm at 65mph is a bit high... my GS430 does about 75mph at 2k rpm.
Do some donuts
When I get my manual swap in I’ll do some. 😎
I got a video on my channel of my gs400 doing donuts , welded diff but I was wondering if I can put a sc300 diff.
Do you know if the GS430 has an LSD diff?
Negative. It does not.
So how long this take to do
3-4hrs.
