    When I was 15 years old, in an Italian museum, in a chamber FULL of popes-portraits, I asked the guide:
    "Who were the cruelest between all of them?" And the guide and all the (religious) people around me, including my mother, laughed at me. The guide answered "Well, no one was cruel. They were popes."
    I was so mad at them... My god, I knew so much more about history at 15 than all the other adults, who go through life like completely blind...

      Yes, I’m afraid there is a female pope. Of course they’ve tried to hide it, it was quite a shame for all the Catholic Church. What gives you the idea, that the Popes profiled here cared anything about Christianity or even knew what Christianity was about? Could it just have been that they simply used the Office of Pope for their personal entertainment, maybe they didn't even believe in God. Just like today we find many clergy who are Atheists and don't know anything about Christian Theology, so to this could have also been the situation 100s of years ago.

      Obviously, powerful oligarchs hoped to use the boy to get their work done! No 12 year old has the wisdom to be a Pope. For some people than as now Christianity was not to be taken seriously and so they used the Faith as a personal play thing a means of entertainment and control. Many of such people were in point of fact Atheists.

    • @Alusnovalotus
      @Alusnovalotus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Not really. The papacy has always been a business venture. Kind of like Disneyland. It proposes a storybook wonderland to the masses but it’s all a plaster facade and we never see the dank underbelly that runs it. Or the lucrative posts filled by the least visionary people to run the racket.

    • @adolphCat
      @adolphCat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Alusnovalotus I believe you need to be more careful and nuanced. The Papacy in it's modern form developed slowly. The 1st man to be given the title Pope i.e. may have been a good man. He probably didn't give himself this title, but the people gave him this title out of affection, not only the Pope of Rome, but the Pope of Alexandria and other ancient bishops have the title Pope. In time however, in the West the Roman Pope became a lawless office, which no one was to judge. In the beginning the title Pope did not denote a lawless dictator over the Church, but a title of affection a 1st among equals. In time the Pope of Rome separated himself from the other 4 patriarchates that were centers of unity within the Church namely Jerusalem, Antioch, Alexandria, and Constantinople. Later still the Pope of Rome effectively freed himself from oversight by the Emperor and kings and princes and the various national churches of Western Europe and became a dictator without any checks and balances. An office holder accountable to no one is by nature going to become Lawless and so evil. Yet, it is very conceivable that the 1st men to be given the title Pope of Rome were good and worthy men. In time however this office would degenerate into evil beyond what anyone previously Pagan or Christian could ever come up with in past ages.

    An informative vdo. Over a span of 56 yrs, I taught college level humanities AND language arts courses, a few in philosophy, art history, and the span of literature (ancient to contemporary [postmodern]). Your research reflects my own as a Roman Catholic.
    Founded by God, incarnate, the Church is holy. On the other hand, the human leaders in their corrupted, mortal nature are sinners from the womb [original sin]. Many who point to our "bad popes" forget the Twelve Apostles selected by Jesus to carry on His work after His Ascension. At one point Judas betrays Jesus with a kiss, Peter boasts to protect Jesus from harm as Jesus's calls him Satan. All 12 ran‐off, abandoning their Master to the Jewish religious leaders. All 12 quarreled over who'd rank highest in Christ's Kingdom, condemned penitant sinners like Mary of Magdalena for squandering money on an ointment worth 300 day's wages, on and on.
    Jesus promises He will remain with His Church till the end of the age, and that it will prevail, even against the gates of Hell.
    Your skill at reconstructing these forgotten faces, especially today, is helpful.
    St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, is reputed to have said that "the floor of Hell is paved with the skulls of bishops". The pope is, after all, the Bishop of Rome. Good job. Thanks, ...
    - RW.

      Did Herr Doctor Luther Protest the Church or did he Protest the Papacy? The Papacy and the Church are not necessarily one and the same organization. Historically, the Church is older than the Papacy. Actually in Luther's mind, I believe he fought for the Church against the Papacy. Luther understood himself to be a minister of the Church and a member of the Church in good standing.
      To this day the interior of many Lutheran Churches are indistinguishable from the interior of Roman Catholic Churches and in many High Church Lutheran parishes the Liturgy is very similar to that found in Roman Catholic Churches. I have witnessed more than one Lutheran Pastor explain that the Confessional Lutheran Church is the Western Catholic Church reformed by the Gospel.

      @@PInk77W1 How could it be possible for the Papacy to exist before the Church? The 1st Church was the Church of Jerusalem founded by St. James the 1st Patriarch who was a close relative of Christ. Saint Peter in time became the 1st Patriarch of Antioch it was only near the end of his life that Sts. Peter and Paul founded the Church in Rome. St. Mark was the 1st Pope of Alexandria, a friend of St. Peter and writer of the Gospel of St. Mark. St. Andrew Peter's older brother was the 1st Patriarch of what was to become Constantinople. It was about 300 years after Christ that the emperors started to call ecumenical councils and the Church started to pass Canon Laws giving the various Patriarchates rankings this was changed from time to time. So, no the Churches existed years and years before the creation of the Papacy and even many more centuries before the creation of the modern Papacy Which is the creation of the Western Church. Like any other Bishop the Bishop of Rome is subject to the authority of the Church as the Church is both older to and superior to the Papacy. It was only after the French Revolution after the ending of Royal Power that the Papacy has taken on dictatorial powers over the Western Church before this time Catholic Kings and Emperors greatly restricted the power of Popes and protected the honor of their national Churches from the overwhelming power of the Papacy, so Popes in the full modern scene only came into being at end of the 18th century.

    It is a commonplace in Catholicism that there have been very bad popes. This is known by everyone. But with one or two rather minor exceptions, all of these have been morally bad, badly misbehaving. What makes the current pope, Francis Bergoglio, unique in the whole 2000 year old line is the extent to which he plays around with doctrine, creating novelty and confusion on an almost weekly basis.
