    you did a nice job. that hairbraid hem was the bane of my existence this past prom season. I think every single dress this year had hairbraid hem and it's really tough to shorten because you have to take it out, clean all the threads off and put it back in at the new length. without all the rippling. I charge a lot because it's a miserable thing to do. I think you should do more wedding dresses. could be fun

      coolirpa I've been doing alterations for a long time. I'm old. it's a good idea to get some practice on a wedding dress that doesn't belong to anybody because brides are INSANE. they will make you cry

      And that's why I'm so afraid to do a wedding dress. The pressure is awful but the rewards of their satisfaction seems so worth it in the end. It's a very special occasion so it can be nerve wrecking.

      Ashili Mcelhaney that’s why I bought a simple lace dress with some sparkle for my wedding. It doesn’t need any alterations.

    This was so stressful and i'm not even getting married yet lol! It's been a long time since I touched up on my fine dressmaking skills so I thought i'd transform a formal gown this time. I'm so rusty! I hope this helps you out and saves you some money :)

      I am currently making my own wedding dress now for my wedding in December. Yes it is very stressful. I would like to see you do another one. I'm glad you did the horsehair and petty coat parts because I have not gotten to those stages yet and will need to know how to do that as I have never made a dress before and this is all new and I am teaching myself along this process. I have chosen also to put a sequin pattern all over the dress because it's based off a haute couture dress I fell in love with. Unfortunately the sequin I chose for it did not come prestrung so I had to teach myself how to hand string them and them apply them following the pattern I drew up. Girl!! I am only halfway done and and I have thousands more sequins to go!! It has been so challenging and stressful but I am so glad I attempted it. I'm so proud of my progress and I can't wait to show the world when I am done. It is so awesome that I get to watch youtubers like you because that helps out so much when I am stuck on something and can't figure out what to do to get past it. Thanks for all the work you put into making creations and filming them, and sharing that process so the world can get a glimpse of how to do it so they can do it too, following your guidance!! I know this was long but I can totally relate to your struggle. :)

    Great job! I worked for two different wedding gown designers and made my own wedding dress years ago. I worked with horsehair many times but never saw it that wide. I had a great time making my dress (and bridesmaids dresses) with my mom. Something I will never forget. :) Happy sewing!

    April, this was exquisite! If you hone these skills, you could so easily get work at a bridal salon -- I think you'd be brilliant at it, really.

    • @coolirpa
      @coolirpa  6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Aww thank you Mari! I can only imagine all the work that goes on in a bridal shop! Seam ripping seam ripping! lol

    • @radioserrelind
      @radioserrelind 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Admittedly, probably a lot of seam ripping, but transformations? Oh, you have that *nailed* because brides clamor for customisations. Speaking as a woman who still hopes to get married, I'm going to be a very non-standard 4'11" and never quite 100 lb: this is not exactly a standard size, and I live in fear of being shown to the children's section since nothing can be done for me. But if someone like you were working with the shop, maybe they'd be able to show me more options.

    • @Ddrhl
      @Ddrhl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I swear that every bridal shop was convinced I should be Scarlett O'Hara from Gone With the Wind, and I was 29!

    • @lvraiderfan
      @lvraiderfan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@radioserrelind I'm 4' 10 3/4" and luckily wedding dresses run so small (like 1-2 sizes smaller) it's a bit easier to find things to fit you. My only (possibly yours too) issue on most things is that they are too long. But that's easily adjustable.

  • @stephiehellyeah2557
    @stephiehellyeah2557 6 ปีที่แล้ว +48

    I rather like the pleats not completely poofed! It gives it a nice box pleat, structural element that works with the simplicity of the design. Very elegant!

  • @cherylmaloney8435
    @cherylmaloney8435 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Overall, It's beautiful. Wedding dresses and horsehair and petticoats are a major pain. That's why I had to charge so much as a dressmaker and people don't really understand all of the work that it entails. They'll say, oh, but it's a really simple design. The design can be deceptive. One suggestion for the hem .... You can cover the awkward look of the stitching with some lace trim (iron on would be easiest). If you add a few simple lace touches elsewhere, it will look intentional.

    Hi April! I am from the Philippines and I am such a fan of your transformations since year 2015. So much that it inspired me to become one so I attended a dressmaking training. Right after I learned how, I started doing gowns which helped a lot. Because I was able to make my own wedding gown and the rest of my bridesmaids' gowns. Thanks so much for the inspiration and will continue to watch your transformation videos that up to now amazes and inspires me how brilliant and talented you are. :) Keep it up! And thanks also for sharing easy sewing hacks and techniques.

    That dress is so beautiful! As a seamstress for bridal/formal wear, I'm impressed by your patience, especially stitching that horsehair by hand.
    If you wanna made the bottom more full, see if you can get some crinoline instead of tulle. Crinoline is stiffer, and that's what is normally in bridal gowns (hemming crinoline is the bane of my existence). For gowns that are puffy or flare, the crinolines are 15+ yards around (hence why I hate hemming it), and normally there are 3 layers stacked on top of each other, each with different fullnesses.

    Wow this turned out so nice!! You're so humble when you were sewing the horse hair braid on because you admitted to making mistakes, but used them to help us learn from them. I liked the flower beading, and I wished you left it on or did some new design with beads since the end product was a little plain. I liked how you turned the straight design of the dress into a mermaid design.

    It is a beautiful transformation! Quilters will sometimes have to ease in seam issues like you had in your hem. If the horsehair brade can take heat you could try "Steam a Seam". You may want to test it out on a mock up first. Good luck.

    You can take out the handstitch on the hh braid and just tack it to the seams. Its so wide it will stay up. Most hh braid in gowns is encased in the lining then attached to hem of gown 😊

    Love the wedding dress. I just got married last Saturday. I got my wedding dress at a thrift store for $10. It's this old vintage flowy lace dress. I just changed the top of the dress to make it look more modern. Got rid of the mock neck and added a boat neck. Then added a v shape to the back. A friend did it for me.

    This turned out beautifully. I think the fit and flare is perfect even though you said you wanted it poofier. Love your creative vision to even reimagine a new design! I just subscribed. 💓

    I love the dress. I wonder if you can dye the fabric so that you can wear it to a regular formal occasion

      You can! Fit dye now has dye for synthetic fabric. Does a nice job.
