  • There is an article out in the universe that says, scientists have found that Super worms eat Styrofoam.
Mongo think - wow that awesome. Everybody could have their own little Styrofoam recycle center in their house and that would be a great way to save the landfill and earth. Styrofoam is a GREAT insulator but it have 1 BIG downside... It not easy recycle.
If you want to set up a Super worm farm check out the first video. Link: • DIY Styrofoam Recyclin...
    WORM FARM continue:
The super worms that were in solitary confinement (sounds so bad) with either die OR start to curl up. This signals the start of the transformation process. They will curl, internally transform into pupas, shed their skin and emerge as a pupa. (nicknamed ALIENS, cause they look like little aliens) Once they become Pupas we can transfer them into the small terrarium. As they grow they will get dark in color and then shed their pupa skin and emerge as adult beetles. NOTE: if you already have beetles in the small terrarium don't put the pupas in there until they get dark in color. (the beetles may eat the young pupas). They are usually super hungry. Like the super worms thin slice some baby carrots for them to eat. Do this every other day. They will also eat just about any vegetables and most fruits, and oat meal.
The beetles will bread and lay eggs in the bedding. Those eggs will hatch into Super Worms! When you start to see very small super worms in the tank bedding. Temporarily remove the beetles and transfer the bedding (and small worms) into the large terrarium with the other super worms. then add new bedding to the beetle tank and put the beetles back in. NOW you have a full cycle Super Worm FARM!
The Pupa transformation process usually starts when the super worm food source is gone and their surroundings are dark. This is why we put them in separate sections of the dark box. If you put them together they will try to eat each other.
    RESULTS -
The blue Styrofoam and house Styrofoam. They barely touched the food try and cup Styrofoam.
They seam not to like the Dense packed polystyrene and with all the worms in the tank they really barely touched the other foam.
50 worms - 3 pet smart short Mongo = 47 worms (Mongo still waiting. Pet smart you still owe Mongo 3 super worms)
    47 worms - 16 to pupate = 31 worms
    31 worms - 8 survivors = 23 DEAD WORMS
With "real" food most all the worms will be alive and healthy after 1 month.
Mongo say that article... NOT TRUE!
To make the statement that Super worms eat Styrofoam. That would mean that they would eat it as a source of food, to sustain life. This is not the case. Technically some of them did EAT Styrofoam but we had a 75% mortality rate. Which means in NO way is Styrofoam a food source! Maybe after a few thousand years of evolution.
Mongo was really hoping this would have worked. Nice idea to solve the Styrofoam problem. But life is not going to be that easy and we humans will have to find a better way to solve our waste problem.
Be sure to comment with your thoughts and suggestions.
Hopefully this video help you if you want to start a super worm farm or if you want to see if this a real option to recycle Styrofoam. IT NOT!

So after looking up the original article, there's a couple things that seem like they could matter here.
    1. It looks like superworms like a bit of water. It's not clear if the researchers gave them water during the experiment, but then did control their moisture before it started. Maybe thirsty worms aren't as hungry (and die a lot)?
    2. Since they eat wheat bran and other plants, maybe they preferred that to the syrofoam.
    3. I don't know a lot about plastics, but the research said they used untreated styrofoam. Maybe ther was a coating or something they didn't like on the food-grade stuff.
It could just be scientists looking for funding too, but maybe give it another shot to be sure.

All very good possibilities. Scientific method say change 1 thing at a time and try again.
