Thanks for a very interesting and thoughtful discussion about Asherah. Goddesses seem to have been an essential part of human spirituality for tens of thousands of years.. It follows that if a society would later be organised and led by an all-powerful patriarchal king, a religious equivalent would be necessary, with all history of an equally powerful goddess suppressed.

There is a point I’d like to include here. The Mormon church has a Mr and Mrs God tradition in it, so though they don’t call Her Asherah, the concept if still alive in this religion. Also there is a strong Shekinah movement in modern Judaism, the feminine Divine principle.

I've heard a possible theory of why Asherah fell out of favor. (I can't remember where I first heard the idea, possibly a Netflix documentary, so feel free to take it with a grain of salt.)
It may have been one of the many outcomes of the Babylonian occupation. People under prolonged stress will frequently look towards figures of strength, and it seems reasonable to suppose that an occupied and oppressed people would become more drawn to a strong warrior god promising retribution, rather than a motherly fertility goddess offering comfort.
The influence of the Zoroastrian Persians, who ultimately defeated the Babylonians, may have also given Judaism an extra push into monotheism, eliminating the need for Asherah completely.

    • @zaco-km3su

    • @kellydalstok8900

I’ve heard it was a period of climate change, when harvests failed, that drove people to chose the war god Jahweh over the other gods. Perhaps they felt like the fertility goddess let them down, and they needed a strong male god to lead them into the fights with other tribes over resources.

Also of interest, the connection of Asherah to poles (trees), and groves and to serpents, specifically the serpent Nehushtan. A serpent wrapped around a tree or pole, a symbol which survives today as the Greek Rod of Asclepius.
I see such strong imagery also present in the Garden of Eden parts of the mythology, with the serpent in the tree, tempting Eve. If we are to assume something more literal to the story, Nehushtan wrapped around Goddess Asherah, who is a fertility goddess, tempting Eve sexual knowledge, in this case, substituted as fruit, common language associated with reproduction.

I was going to post about the Asherah Towers, which were manmade. They were built aside each House of a God. They got bigger and bigger, as time went on and there were either 2 or 4 "Asherahs" outside of each temple/house. These are even mentioned in the Bible, by name. Also, she's not so much a lioness as those lions are common with her, as are the trees. El, her husband, is shown as touching the loins' mouths - the same way that Asherah was shown, here, in this video. There are depictions of a huge snake framing some of her art pieces, so we know that what you said is correct. Asherah is shown as a tree, as she's the mother of all living/life. Your mention of the Garden of Eden is accurate, yes. The snake is shown as wrapped around the tree, which is Asherah.

I think that the reference to Asherah as the consort of YWHW was kept out of the Bible because by the time it began to be written the society had become totally patriarchal, possibly due to the perceived need for worshipping a strong male deity, one who could smite the enemy. This was engineered into the "history" of the Israelites (remember who "El" actually was), and completely erased the true history of religion in Israel and Judah.

The Israelites were originally Polytheistic. The evidence is in the Hebrew language. Hebrew is a Canaanite language because the Israelites descended from older peoples from the older Canaanite peoples. They worshiped their original god EL Elyon, but Yahweh was introduced. @@angofbew Yes, Yahweh was a originally minor god in the pantheon, called Yahu i think. He was introduced from the southern tribes (Midians most likely) and later incorporated into the Canaanite pantheon. This is where this passage in the Bible alludes to:
"When the Most High (EL Elyon) gave the nations their inheritance (henotheism, each city-state had their own patron deity, but recognized the others) when He divided the sons of man, (Descendants of Noah they think are the ancestors of their neighbours), He set the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God (The Elohim, the children of the Canaanite god El). But the LORD’s (The children of El were all lords, IE Baals. The Baal in this instance is Yahu or Yahweh) portion is His people, Jacob His allotted inheritance.(Judah)" - Deuteronomy 32:9

    1. O my Father, thou that dwellest
In the high and glorious place,
When shall I regain thy presence
    And again behold thy face?
    In thy holy habitation,
    Did my spirit once reside?
    In my first primeval childhood
Was I nurtured near thy side?
    2. For a wise and glorious purpose
Thou hast placed me here on earth
    And withheld the recollection
    Of my former friends and birth;
    Yet ofttimes a secret something
    Whispered, "You're a stranger here,"
And I felt that I had wandered
    From a more exalted sphere.
    3. I had learned to call thee Father,
Thru thy Spirit from on high,

Was restored, I knew not why.
In the heav'ns are parents single?
No, the thought makes reason stare!
    Truth is reason; truth eternal
Tells me I've a mother there.
    4. When I leave this frail existence,
When I lay this mortal by,
Father, Mother, may I meet you
In your royal courts on high?
Then, at length, when I've completed
All you sent me forth to do,
    With your mutual approbation
Let me come and dwell with you.

Agreed. Asherah's nickname was "She who walks on the Sea". This would, indeed, be the Mediterranean. Astarte was known in Caanan, as well as in Kemet/Egypt. They sullied Astarte's name by making the spelling into something shameful. Obviously, she was demoted, as a goddess. I believe that Astarte came to be known as the goddess of love and war. Like Diana and Venus. She was known as the Morning Star (either Mercury or Venus), so was the bearer of light.

Great video! I didn’t know some of these things, and I loved it! Just wanted to say, though, that it’s not entirely true to say that there is no hint of a “Mrs. God” in the Bible. References are not plentiful, but if my understanding is correct, the Hebrew word used for God (at least in the creation story) is both androgynous and plural. Furthermore, in Genesis we have references to gods (plural, even in English) participating in creation, and it is said that man was created in God’s image, male AND female. If “God” referred to a single androgynous entity, then humanity would not truly be made in its image. The variety of Christianity within which I was raised believes in a Heavenly Mother, not just a Father. With this framework, we interpret these verses in Genesis to mean that “God” refers to the union of male and female, and that neither being is God on its own outside the context of the union. This allows humanity to truly be made in God’s image, and sets a heavenly precedent for basic human relationships. It also affects the interpretation of certain verses. For example, at the end of Matthew 5, Christ’s commandment to be perfect (complete) as (in the manner in which) our Father in Heaven is perfect is impossible to fulfil outside of the context of marriage between a man and a woman.

In the Sefer Zohar there is a discussion that the worship of Asherah in Jewish tradition was stopped because of the confusion over "their" Asherah and the Asherah of the Canaanites who is consort to Baal. In some works I've read, Asherah was "hidden" in the aspect of Shekinah (God's presence and power) which is seen as the matronet or consort of the Father. As an aside, when the matronet was in exile, Lilith was the consort of God Most High.

Speculative note: goddess with two lions beside her, reminds me of Sekmet who was changed into Hathor. Sekmet, I think, represented the post catastrophe horrors done by the great flood and Hathor, who is sometimes represented as standing on a lioness, represents the ending of the horror and return to agrarian culture. So, perhaps the goddess with two lions under her control is also a representation of Hathor.

All Pagan Deities are male and female, female and male - the Goddess and God of Nature..
Lucifer the Devil is not the same as Lucifer the Roman or Etruscan god of light, the consort of Diana, the Devine Feminine Principle, whom German tribes used to venerate in the form of a log, or Asherim as it were.
Indeed if one examines Pagan mythology, it becomes clear that all peoples adhered to the same principles in the past, allowing for cultural differences and variations.
But just about all of the Old Gods are lumped together with the stupid debbil in many people's minds nowadays. Which is a pity, because as I say, the Yin and Yang is how nature works - just like us.

Stop throwing around the word Pagan as if it has any meaning. It doesn't.
It's a Roman/Latin word, meaning country dweller. Sometimes used for religion of the country dweller. Specifically it was used for the vikings.
But that's it. It's totally different than the context of heathen or unbeliever.
It's ridiculously overused when it doesn't fit.
Dieties are not male & female.
      Odin is not female.
Unless you are looking at the true aspect of divinity having no gender. Which is basically Yin Yang in nature.

The cycles of nature are our holy days, the earth is our temple, it's creatures our partners and teachers. We worship a deity that is both male and female, a mother Goddess and a father God, who together created all that is, was, and ever shall be. We respect life, cherish the free will of all sentient beings, and accept the sacredness of all creation" - Edain McCoy.
Yes well, nature based spirituality isn't restricted in any way. We can do as we will, so long as no harm is done ! The word pagan may come from a Roman word meaning country-dweller, however it is become a term which denotes a large umbrella of indigenous beliefs which have things in common - such as the belief in a God as well as a Goddess. Every Pagan is unique, and so while I may believe that YHWH or El Elion and Lilith or Asherah is God/dess, you will find that many Pagans believe in Odin and Freya or Isis and Azar, or any of the other deities of nature which correspond in every way to reality - or the Yin and Yang within and without of all beings.
Personally I see that all gods and Goddesses are one God/dess. So sue me lol

I'm expanding on an earlier reply by 'Deidre L' ->
There IS an Abrahamic religion today where God has a wife, although it's not openly discussed with non-members by those (a small percentage?) who are aware of that part of their doctrine. During my youth, I had a few close friends in my neighborhood who were Latter Day Saints - Mormons - from the branch under Brigham Young (one of many) which moved en masse to Utah after their religion's originator, Joseph Smith was murdered. I wasn't a member, but I delved into their history and probably knew more than my friends. The doctrine is called the Adam-God theory. When a couple marries, they are "sealed" together in a secret ceremony (and given what is called 'holy underwear' as a symbol) so that after death, in heaven, they will continue their intimate relationship and produce "spirit children" who will populate a different planet of which the male (who had been ordained as an Elder - like most males in the LDS religion) is God - just like Adam is the God of earth. Because I spent time with my friends, I was frequently saying to others, "But I'm not a Mormon," which is probably why I started reading about it at such a young age.
P.S. As in all those male-dominant religions, the female has no 'power' of her own, but she is God's wife! - usually along with a few other females in a polygamous relationship.

I feel like some of the points you make might be a little confusing, since they risk sounding as though a few passages were skipped. However, what I find interesting is that Asherah, through her equivalents, was seen as the consort of the main god (or one of the main gods) across most of the Middle East. What if she was, originally, the main goddess of the area? We're talking about the Fertile Crescent, one of the places where agriculture first started, so a fertility goddess being the most important one makes sense.
Then, as other religions started developing, Asherah could not have simply disappeared, so she became the consort of the main deity.
Perhaps, those references to Asherah in proto-Jewish artefacts could also be explained by the gradual assimilation into the faith by other cultures, who probably thought that the Abrahamic God was at first just another version of their god, and, as such, Asherah was his consort

    This is base on research.
    1. The Holy Spirit is compare to a dove. John wasn’t saying the Spirit look like one. He said the Spirit was coming down like dove. Doves were use to describe how beautiful a lady was. It was a simile for female beauty. The Bible was saying John saw a pretty lady. Not a feminine looking dude. This only use for women and only women.
    2. The word ek in Greek which means out of or of or from and it is connected to a woman giving birth. The Bible never said begat (genno) by the Holy Spirit. *
    3. There books that go back to the second century AD that describe the Holy Spirit being the Mother and a girl.
    4. Mary conceiving doesn’t mean she conceived from her egg cell. It could mean an egg cell or an embryo was implanted in her. Genesis does mention her seed, but it could be symbolic. Some people think Eve or Mary. That could be it, but the early Jews also saw the Holy Spirit as female, so maybe Her seed.
    6. Some people compare the similarities between Wisdom and the Holy Spirit.
    7. “In the fourth century a monk by the name of Jerome produced the Latin Vulgate translation of the Bible. This became the translation of choice in the Western Roman empire. And in Latin, the word for “Spirit” (spiritus) is a masculine noun
The Bible said the Father begat Jesus and not the Holy Spirit. The Bible said both are God, but that could mean these beings and Their Son act as one symbolically. Plus the Bible has bee edited several times. Jesus was begat from Father out of (ek) the Holy Spirit and put into Mary as an embryo. Humans don’t give birth to embryos (marsupials do), but they aren’t humans. Now they use Mary body as a nest? I have no idea.
The Holy Spirit is female part 2
Continuing: I already explain and gave evidence that the early Jews saw the Holy Spirit as female in the link above. Now there a several more things I want to says
No I don’t believe or think that the Holy Spirit is the queen of heaven.
The word come upon (despite what some people believe) is not sexual and has never been use in a sexual way in the Bible. The word means to arrive. This means the Holy Spirit arrive to Mary for Mary’s implantation.
How did Jesus end up with flesh? Well God is all powerful, so I’m pretty sure he will made a fleshy body for Jesus. Why have Jesus be born that way? So He can relate to us. Again Mary conceiving doesn’t mean sperm and egg. She could got pregnant by having an embryo or egg cell implanted in her. Another possibility is that the Father use his genes, the Holy Spirit genes and genes from Mary. If that was the case, then he was two dads and two moms.
Some Christians teach that all three are the same and that maybe true, but there is not possibility. All of them are separate beings that are one (symbolically).
Both man and woman are said to be made in the image of God. Well if that is true, then what image woman is made from. Some people think it means something symbolic. Sure but when Jesus pre earthly look appear is he is described looking like a man. I mention how doves were use as simile for female beauty and John never said the Holy Spirit came down looking like a dove, but came down as or like a dove, so a has the appearance of a woman. The Father has never been seen, but I assume He looks like a dude.

Story Time. I like to call the The Crinacals of the Heavens”. Let me explain by Just adding on to what this wonderful gentleman is saying in this clip.
This may be long but please be patient in reading. If you read to the end it will help to get a clearer understanding of who Asherah was and why they took her out of the Bible if this topic interest you.
Asherah at one point before time, Heavenly name was known as Catalina was equal to The Most High God. He loved, adore and worshiped the ground she walked on. There was nothing she wanted that he could not make possible for her to have. He made the sun, moon and All the morning stars (Sons of God) in the celestial bodies or worshipped her. However, even with all that, Catalina was not satisfied with her position. She did not like how Yahweh was training and disciplining their children. She thought he was too strict and Boring (Geeky like).
I don’t know what got into her or came over her, she started to look elsewhere beyond The Most High God and ended up sleeping with one of The sons of God who pretended to be like The Most High God. Because this was an abomination to God, seeing that she was the only Goddess he knew that was equal to him sharing the responsibilities of ruling the heavens and universe it was an abominable and unforgivable act. This was the beginning of what cause a shift and division in the Celestial Realm.
She was eventually kicked out of the heavens because she would not stop her adulteress behavior. That is way Yawah kept warning the children of Israel ( whom were spiritual/celebrity beings in human from that he shared with Asherah), to not be an adulteress nation by worshiping other gods of other nations. It was a form of betrayal and disrespect to him because he was the father/ daddy to them. But the reason why they kept turning from Yahweh to turn to Baal and Asherah because Asherah is their celestial mother goddess.
They were torn and inbetween the drama between the Mother and Father. This is the primary story example of what happens to children in divorce cases. This is why Israel was Yahweh chosen or selected people above all nations because they belonged to him. These “other Nations were kingdoms of children of James and Catalina or let say Baal and Asherah as they were known to the nations on Earth.
It got even worse when Earth was formed because She Asherah took the same Son of God (Who heavenly name was (JAMES at the was time) she was sleeping with as her new consort and started to establish their own kingdoms in the celestial realm apart from The Most Highest of the highest God, becoming his opposer and enemy. She was later given the name Asherah and other names by her devotee depending on the nations or kingdoms that worshipped her. (They were both cursed and kicked out of the celestial realm along with everything (including children) in their kingdom becoming the kingdom of darkness creating the Great War in the heavens between the kingdoms of light and the Kingdoms darkness, Good vs Evil, children of light, and children of darkness.
JAMES was also given various names by his children from nations of the Earth. Some famous names of his were Baal, Moloch, the Devil and now Satan.
However, Asherah is the She Devil above Satan because she is the mother or use to be the mother of the old celestial bodies that was once shared with Yahweh. She was stripped of that position and title but she still has her powers and used it to do wicked work of witchcraft, prostitution, mostly evils deeds just to oppose and get back at her former husband the Most High God.
The reason why she is not mentioned that much in the “KING JAMES VERSION BIBLE” fabrication his version of the story, is to cover up the truth by removing vital books that explain the story I am and sharing with you now. They did this in order protect her identity and how she is the mastermind who is really behind the all the wickedness, the mother of devils, demons, Wicked rulers, and principalities that are in high places on this Earth being manipulated by her.
Asherah new consort is Baal aka Satan aka James power can only go so far because he is not the originator of All. However, Asherah was an equal originator in creation as The Most God at one point. Therefore she has more power as The Most Hight God Yahweh but she chooses to use her powers for evil to ruin people and nations on this planet call Earth.
She is the Mother Goddess to most of the people currently living on Earth. They worship and faithfully follow her.
She is the who the Bible describe as The Whore of Babylon, refers to both a symbolic female figure in Revelation 17 (verse 5) as "Mystery, Babylon the Great, Mother of Harlots and Abominations of the Earth" With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.
She still doing it to this day, manipulating everyone and everything bringing Everything that belongs to them down to their Ultimate destruction right along with her and her Satan husband.
I know it was long but I also hope it helped in giving a better understanding of what’s going on currently in our world today.

There IS mention of more gods in the bible. The first commandment says: yI an the lord your god. You shall have no gods before me.
In other words, god says he’s the most important of the gods. It doesn’t say there ARE no other gods.
I don’t remember which OT book it is that implies it, but in ancient times gods only had jurisdiction within the boundaries of the tribe. A biblical character goes on a journey and he’s going to have to pray to a different god.

If one can read between the lines with the bible as well as look at what archeology has found then a lot of this makes perfect sense. The Israelites were never a unified group of people. They were a tribal society. Dare I say semi-nomadic for much of their history. Israelite religion and people that would later change into Judaism and Jews grew out of Canaanite religion and people. Hebrew being a Canaanite dialect is all the proof you need that the Israelites were not outsiders to the area but natives. That includes the religion. Many times in the Bible it talks about how a lot of the people started worshiping other gods and then God abandoned them. These accounts were written much later from Jews who had made the leap to Monotheism telling about sins they believed their ancestors had committed. So Israelites definitely worshiped Asherah and Baal and all sorts of gods that were not Yahweh which probably varied by tribe city and region. Though Yahweh was supposed to be the main god. Later Jews saw all that as them committing idolatry and pissing off God which is why they denounced it every chance they got in the Bible. People living at that time probably did not see it that way other than the Prophets that may or may not have even really existed.

Early Judaism was clearly polytheistic, with the many names for God in the old stories corresponding to older pagan deities (El, Yaweh, El Shaddai, etc.) and many subset groups went back to practicing certain pagan rituals/combined elements of different belief systems including polytheism. In the more recent books of the Torah, specifically Jeremiah (where Ashera is specifically mentioned), the whole story is trying to shame paganized Jews into coming back to the fold, with the exiled Judaic kings trying to stir up religious fervor to get back in power. The theory is that the whole story of Moses was fabricated for the same reason.

I understand this discussion focused on the OT, but the topic is much broader and the "Bible" refers to OT and NT. Therefore, I present these as verses that question if God would actually have a wife.
Matthew 22:30 - For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.
    1 Corinthians
    Chapter 7
1 Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.
2 Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.
27 Art thou bound unto a wife? seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? seek not a wife.

Not quite. Archeologists have found no evidence of Hebrew monotheism before the 6th century BCE. so far the oldest form of monotheism was found in Egypt during the 14th century BCE but this particular God "Atem" had no relation to Yahweh. The oldest form of Hebrew monotheism was found in Iraq which indicates that the Jews did not believe in only one God until the Babylonian exile.
