So torn on this one. Theres something iconic about the flat shaded polygon look of the early Sega 3D games, and the Remix definitely misses some of that charm. However, as a competitive fighting game on the console market, Remix is more something that could go toe to toe against Tekken or Battle Arena Toshinden. It’s kind of crazy to think that even though the original Saturn VF is the better fighting game, BAT ended up being more well received mainly because of the textured graphics. I think if Remix was the game that launched with the Saturn it would’ve done all that more to edge it out against the PSX. @@sonicecho5235 I don't know, people keep recommending me to switch to the JP console, but I just feel like the PAL versions have a charm unmatched by those "superior" Japanese copies. But to each their own I guess...

I've been waiting for this comparison. The original version of this game used polygons for the floor/fighting platform; the impoved Remix version on the right used a VDP2 background layer and raster effects (the same used by 16-bit Super Famicom Mario Kart) to render the floor/fighting platform. This delivered something far better looking for a fraction of the cost computationally; and it's the perfect demonstration of the fact that *the Saturn's 2D VDP2 was always intended for and designed to augment the Saturn's 3D system* . That's why it's the VDP2 and not the VDP1 (which is he 3D GPU.) It will take a while to lay to rest the myths that "the Saturn was built from the ground-up up to be a two-dee powerhouse!" and "The Saturn's 3D VDP was only an afterthought!" but lately folks are starting to wise up to the facts -- especially considering it was Sega themselves who kickstarted the 3D revolution in arcades with their Virtua-series of games.
Exactly! It's clear VDP1 and VDP2 were designed to be used in tandem. Same with the SH2s. The SH2 CPU was designed to be used in a 2-CPU setup. The idea Sega could throw in an extra CPU thus requiring a motherboard, OS, and probably an external casing redesign and release the console earlier than intended is insane. Plus the Saturn has excellent gouraud shading and a form of perspective correction - the later the Playstation didn't have - which are not applicable to 2D shows the Saturn was developed with 3D in mind.

I prefer Remix version ! The characters are detailed enough for that time ! I have played the arcade version when I was a Kid , I ve Got my first pc in 96 but way before that I had an Atari and a NES
Some characters look a bit awkward, Kage I think they honestly did a disservice, but Remix Lau looks _really_ good. Impressively so, to the point he almost sticks out.
Its kinda like a professional romhack, or quality hack, or like when they add CD audio on cart systems, things like that. Maybe younger gamer might not want care but playing new games and romhacks on 20 & 30 year old consoles is so epic remakes and remixes are great but id like things like this on retro consoles more.

While it makes total sense that they'd release Remix back then (trying to show the power of the Saturn, etc) I can't help but prefer the original low poly one more now years later. I just love the cheesiness of it :P
I bought the console and the game at launch, for the time it looked amazing, and it was fun to play. For one of the first real 3d games at the time i say they did a good job, people judge them too harshly.
The more expressive shadows of the original version gives more depth to the visuals, but the polygons and textures from the remix make it look better in general.
I do like the new style. Very informative. Yeah I agree about the original version. It gives the impression that your wasting your money on a under performing gaming console. I doubt a lot of people had the arcade at home experience on their mind at the time. The mentality was this should be SEGA's cutting edge new system. Also Tekken coming to North America on the Playstation in November 1995 didn't help either.
Vf1 poly version isn't bad at all. Better then the 32x one. Also consider the difference in hardware between arcade and even saturn. Different machines. The arcade machine was a beast.
Even the floor textures look better... except for the second stage, where it actually looks worse in Remix. Sure, the concrete does have added detail, but it's less noticeable than the faded textures and extra details on the rim of the arena in the original. For some reason, that floor texture was reused for the fight against Dural instead of reusing Akira's floor texture.
"Patience grasshopper." A piece of advice that Sega itself must have heard in 1994 when considering the launch of Saturn. A few extra months would have allowed the programmers to polish the launch games and get good reviews.
I am still shocked that Sega had 6 months after the Japanese launch to continue working on the original Virtua Fighter and didn't even fix the bugs and a full remake in Remix came out just months later!
i wonder if there is a realistic ultimate mod version which might be for pc is it kinda different than both remix version and original version from 1994?
Excelentes tempos! 👏🙌
as someone who's never played either and who's looking at this for the 1st time, objectively speaking the remix is better(colors and details). but although you would think why would anybody prefer the older version?, there seems to be this phenomenon, where the memories behind the older version gives people who have played it just give them an odd preference to it (yes i know its called nostalgia, it's still the darnest thing about ppl 😂)
In retrospect I prefer the flat shaded polygon of VF, than the unshaded textured one in Remix. Without the lighting it feels really flat. Same goes with the difference between VF2 Arcade and saturn.
Remix looks good but the original is cleaner and soft and you can see the difference in fps value for the remix version that looks so heavy in movements that's why I prefer the original one that has less details and it's not polluted like the remix version
You know I like both of them but I prefer the older one. The first VF was a huge deal. They really were going for the Virtual Reality look and feel minus the headset.
Funny thing is I didn't own a Sega Saturn as a kid even though I wanted it and for some reason the left side is how I remember Virtue Fighter looking but I don't know how I have that memory because I don't remember playing the game and I only briefly had an encounter with a Sega Saturn in my youth at a house with this kid I played baseball with. BTW, the graphics on the right look like it's trying to compete against Tekken 1 for the ps1. It might even beat Tekken 1 in graphics but it definitely doesn't beat Tekken 2 and Tekken 3. I remember those two ps1 fighters having really good graphics for the time period.
Yeah the NV1 card was a huge flop too, because game developers did not want to have to convert all of the models in their games to work with quads instead of tris.
Virtua Fighter Remix is technically more impressive but the original Virtua Fighter has aged better with its classic flat-shaded look. Character models in the sequel are better, the frame rate is doubled and resolution is super high.

Funny thing is I own both. Remix is clearly the better game. But I still play the original from time to time aswell.
I prefer Remix version ! The characters are detailed enough for that time ! I have played the arcade version when I was a Kid , I ve Got my first pc in 96 but way before that I had an Atari and a NES
Patience Grasshopper! 😅
Ok that's infinitely better
When I was a kid in the arcade.. "Akira must think he ryu"....the original still looks fun...Sarah has a cool stage setting
If you keep the punch button + UP pressed, he jumps twice in the enemy's carcass. I found that out by chance after losing 9 times in a row to Pai lol
Lau looks a lot like Mercenary Tao from Dragonball. Or perhaps Mercenary Tao looks a lot like Lau?
They're both so gorgeous. That said, I would have loved to have seen Remix run at 60fps on Saturn.
great video and captions
Some characters look a bit awkward, Kage I think they honestly did a disservice, but Remix Lau looks _really_ good. Impressively so, to the point he almost sticks out.
Its kinda like a professional romhack, or quality hack, or like when they add CD audio on cart systems, things like that. Maybe younger gamer might not want care but playing new games and romhacks on 20 & 30 year old consoles is so epic remakes and remixes are great but id like things like this on retro consoles more.
Excellent, I played VF Remix!
Sarah bryants stage reminds me of being on top of a hill in California at night time
...'Virtua Fighter Remix'...still one of my all time favoritez...and that 'OST'...some of the bezt muzic ever compozed🧐
In the US people had the chance to exchange the 1 for the remix for free
Slightly more polygons, texture mapping, animated textures (for the faces), and Guraud shading goes a long way!
Vf1 poly version isn't bad at all. Better then the 32x one. Also consider the difference in hardware between arcade and even saturn. Different machines. The arcade machine was a beast.
If Virtua Fighter Remix was an launch title of in Japan, Saturn would have a huge lead over Playstation.
It didn't matter how it looked like. It was 3D (!!!!!!) and that was the point back then. :D
"Patience grasshopper."
A piece of advice that Sega itself must have heard in 1994 when considering the launch of Saturn.
One Virtua Fighter ive think is cool us the Sega Genesis version is like Virtua Fighter 2D
The very first case of a remastered game on the same console!!!!
I had no idea the remix was so superior. Why didn t sega also made a remix of house of the dead like that on saturn ?
Because the Saturn was dead to Sega by the time House of the dead came out, it was all about moving to the Dreamcast.
There was nothing to remix with house of the dead. What it did was about the best that the saturn could do at the time.
When i see the npc model are superior to the zombies, when i see vf remix , when i see vf 2 in 640*480, there were things to do.
Excelentes tempos! 👏🙌
Virtua Fighter = Prototype
Virtua Fighter Remix = Classic
as someone who's never played either and who's looking at this for the 1st time, objectively speaking the remix is better(colors and details). but although you would think why would anybody prefer the older version?, there seems to be this phenomenon, where the memories behind the older version gives people who have played it just give them an odd preference to it (yes i know its called nostalgia, it's still the darnest thing about ppl 😂)
In retrospect I prefer the flat shaded polygon of VF, than the unshaded textured one in Remix. Without the lighting it feels really flat. Same goes with the difference between VF2 Arcade and saturn.
Very good 😃
Remix looks good but the original is cleaner and soft and you can see the difference in fps value for the remix version that looks so heavy in movements that's why I prefer the original one that has less details and it's not polluted like the remix version
You know I like both of them but I prefer the older one. The first VF was a huge deal. They really were going for the Virtual Reality look and feel minus the headset.
Daytona USA deserved a remix version, but for some reason it was completely altered to the point it did not feel like the same game.
Lau é pai da Pai e parece com Tao Pai Pai (DB).
Virtua Fighter 2 looks far better than Tekken 2 and Virtua Fighter 3 blows away Tekken 3 graphically.
Nice comparation!
XD
Yeah the NV1 card was a huge flop too, because game developers did not want to have to convert all of the models in their games to work with quads instead of tris.
Virtua Fighter Remix is technically more impressive but the original Virtua Fighter has aged better with its classic flat-shaded look.
Character models in the sequel are better, the frame rate is doubled and resolution is super high.
I probably would have been pissed If I got the original and they came out with th remix shortly after.
