Especially sad that 3 people can dislike a voice like THAT at only 18..... Envy has many different ways of showing itself. No one will ever compete with this voice, ever!!
His was such a unique voice....unbelievable beauty, strength, timber.....his duet with Merrill, The Pearl Fishers, was absolutely without a doubt the best.
The most beautiful tenor voice. It was at age 16 when I heard this heavenly voice and has never ceased to touch me deep into my soul. My solo regret also being never had the opportunity to hear him live. Most wonderful Jussi. My whole family is ardent Jussi Bjorling fans.
If any tenor ever had a uniquely distinctive voice, instantly recognisable, it was Jussi. I remember his final concerts in the Albert Hall -- no microphone --totally audible. Sublime singing!
Extraordinary - he's 18? So love his voice. Someone here has described it as 'serene.' That's a perfect description. Bjorling was my father's favorite tenor. My father was my favorite tenor.
It's incredible with this masterful singing and breathing technique at 18 only. And the 'tears in the voice' (without sobbing thank God) in the voice is fully noticeable already....
I was in a store in Santa Monica along the 4th St. mall and wanted something Tenor and strong. Kind of an overall operatic sound as an education. I would have gone to Caruso for the epitome, but the man handed me a collection of Jussi's music. Playing this cd to a friend of mine from Suisse brought her to tears. He kept that range for his whole life. A real gift to the world. (I'm not an opera guy at all, I don't like female singers but I know what moves me and that vocal quality is inescapable) I read that no recording could ever represent his true voice, this from a critic or reporter.
In 1956, Datmar, my ex-boss Bruce Graham's Swedish wife, said Bjorling used to sing in his boat in her childhood neighborhood. George Wu, ARCHITECT, A.I.A., NCARB 2019-4-20
Captivating in every way, shape and form! Deeply felt and beautifully expressed, Bjorling was simply one of the greatest singers and musicians to grace our earth! Added to my playlist with deep gratitude! A tenor for the Ages! Wonderful photos!!!
Who knows what talents preceded Caruso and his contemporaries prior to the invention of recordings. There were many outstanding tenors in the first half of the 20th century. JB stands out for the beauty of his voice top to bottom and his superb technique. Regardless of your choices for the top performers of that era, an honest appraisal puts JB right up there.
+Sofie A When I first head a recording of Jussi, I was frozen, standing, not able to move from the tape deck. I just listened, transfixed under such perfection. I have quite a collection. Strange, though the recordings are not of present day-perfection, he still moves me as no other. No force, no overstatement, just sensual perfection. And that was early in my introduction to Opera-what I previously had referred to as chicken squawk. Even this early recording, when he was just barely a young man, that special spark is evident. Thirty years later and I still find no other tenor his match. Namaste and care, mhikl
+Mhi kl I think the 'Jussi effect' hit you. :) The first time you hear his voice you fall in love with it as it moves you so much. He has a tender, passionate expression that is incredibly powerful, I think.
Sofie A. Thanks so much for this. The first 2x I went to the Met (in Nov.1959) I heard Jussi -first as Turiddu and 4 days later as Cavaradossi. Still my favorite tenor!
Of all the great tenors I've listened to, new and old, this is the benchmark I compare them with. I've never heard such a perfect pitch, tone, and control in anyone else. Would have loved to see him perform live.
Richard Hale Before I said someone was great I'd have to think they're better than Webster-Booth, Stuart Burrows, John McCormack or Joseph Schmidt, to name just three or four. I don't think Jussi is. Sorry. His dynamics or/and flow are wrong for me. I may be missing something- rather, I must be missing something because so many people are calling him great. Di Stefano is my idea of great, but many people don't like his voice. It can't be just taste, though, Richard. Any thoughts?
bin don Its your choice of course. "Many people don't like his voice you say". I have no idea where your are coming from here. Those fine singers you mention wouldn't either I suggest. My best wishes but Bjorling was recognised by most of the singing world as in a category of his own pretty much with which I agree
Peter Brewster As it is written in bin dons text it says that it´s DS voice they don´t like, quote: "Di Stefano is my idea of great, but many people don't like his voice".
Get a hearing aide fitted right away ! Di Stefano was a great singer as a young man but lost all the bloom of the voice by staining to sing all the wrong parts,
WOW! Nobody just hearing this rendition would believe that the artist doing it is only a mere kid of eighteen years !!! Here, the great advantage of an extremely early vocal training clearly showed (at 4!) - When other great artist were that age, they were just starting their training as an opera singer, whilst he was already a full fledged professional at the time. And this incredably long training made him also one of the greatest stilists of singing ever, I believe.
Training will only take you so far, though. On top of that, you have to have a God given, very special talent and a unique voice to be able to become as great as Jussi was.
@@blueskygoldensun Very true. His two brothers were also tenors, and had the same training. They had careers, and there exist a few recordings of them as adults. But there is absolutely no comparison with Jussi.
My favourite is the touching love song Summer Night (Sommarnatt). He sings 'I love you' so tenderly and it feels as if he is singing it to you. Very intimate and sweet.

Wonderful!!!, it is amazing how his voice sounded similar over the years (I know a little darker since time passed, as well as more powerful, but in scence very similar). Someone told me sang with his brothers when a child?, is it so?. For me Jussi Björling is like the forrest pictures I saw from Sweeden, with a lot of heat mixed with a wonderful cold...like when at the end of a wonderful day, you seat in front of the chiminy fire...so natural yet so special. Bravo Jussi Björling!!!
Hej! Ja, Jussi kommer alltid att ha en speciell plats i mitt hjärta. Så mycket värme, ömhet och känsla han hade i sin unika röst. Det är så synd att han inte fick leva längre för han hade så mycket mer att ge.
Rooster Lewis Tone Deaf just ignore it this is beautiful. The first time I heard his voice was in The Weeknd Opera show on the radio every Sunday night he played a couple songs I thought the voice of that solutely beautiful almost made you cry. He sang a song and Swedish I wish I knew what it was called. It was an opera it did he ever do The Pearl Fishers? My Dad loved his voice and he knew Opera. He said to me once SON there are good voices and there are great voices he has a great voice don't you think such a gentle pure quality lyrical voice as top notes as low notes middle voice my dad said that's greatness. He also love zinka milanov but not liked tebaldi good night of course. La Divina what's the number one in his heart and soul need I say more thank you for posting excuse my typos I use the microphone when I make a comment.
Du har rätt, han är verkligen en utmärkt saangare, hans röst stämmer samtidigt ljuvlig och säker. Roligt att lyssna paa "Torna a Surriento" paa svenska... En hälsning.
I clipped an article from the American music magazine called The Etude. I think the date is 1947 or so...I have the article. I have it somewhere, I've saved it. It was an interview with Jussi Bjoerling and Jussi said how one has to sing very naturally. Amazing at age 18 his voice was so relaxed and open. He spoke of relaxing the belly and the jaw and you can see in the TH-cam recordings that his mouth showed him very relaxed almost yawning....My best ever Tenor of all time. Thanks for digging this up and posting it.
gurubustercan At 18 many singers are drawn to force notes that don't come naturally. Not Jussi. He never shows off his gifts. He presents what he has beautifully, unforced, pure and lovely without attempting to urge the voice to do more. The result is purity and the promise of future greatness which he certainly delivered.
+gurubustercan This is how the voice, when singing, should be used. I've been taught to sing this way, except breathing from the belly and not the chest. Everything else the same, however.
This voice takes your heart, caresses it for a while .. and puts it back in a better place.
BazzasBest That was beautifully expressed. And very true.
+BazzasBest What a lovely comment! His voice has taken my heart for many years....

The greatest tenor ever and arguably the greatest opera singer ever.
Stefán Arngrímsson Agreed thanks
agreed the greatest tenor
John Davies can't find anything about him
No it is dmitri Vhorstovsky in my humble opinion. No offence
After Enrico Caruso, yes.
Reading his wife's biography of this incredible, complex man. It is wonderful.
In 1945 I saw JB in Mpls. for the first time. These ensuing 70 years leads me to believe all these superlatives!!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!
Extraordinary - he's 18? So love his voice. Someone here has described it as 'serene.' That's a perfect description. Bjorling was my father's favorite tenor. My father was my favorite tenor.
Cryin´ time!
the best tenor voice in the world! tack sa mycket!
The most beatiful voice ever !!!!
such a profound vocal intelligence and musical sensitivity at age 18,,,,,
He is the best. His voice pierces my spirit. Thanks
It's incredible with this masterful singing and breathing technique at 18 only. And the 'tears in the voice' (without sobbing thank God) in the voice is fully noticeable already....
How very beautiful. So well produced,, centered and pure. Even then he sang better than the tenors on the Metropolitan stage today.
MrSkylark1 Do you mean yelling tenors ? Unnatural singing ?
The Best ever !!!
18 anni? Incredibile. Espressione e controllo perfetti.

he was the vocal master...an amazing line.great breath control and he never made a bad recording....
Thanks! Jussy... the best!
The voice was so similar and so good at 18 as when he died
Quite simply, the most beautiful voice ever!
Absolutely wonderful peerless
Jussi bara var/ är bäst! Sikken voice...tar nog förmodligen 400 år tills nästa Jussi kommer fram...
I don´t think we will ever hear something like this again during our lifetime... And i am only 41. :(
A rare lovely voice,, it brings tears to my eyes,,

A perfect singer beautiful from start to finish
When only the best will do. Thank you.
Gorgeous timbre and deep soulful feeling. Amazing for one so young.
The first time I heard him sing (Amor ti Vieta) I knew I'd come home.
it doesn't seem possible he was only eighteen when this was recorded a very mature and beautiful recording a sample for what was to come
Well, why not? I do hear boys to day that are 17 and sing good
Sing 'good' is one thing - singing like Jussi Björling did at that age is extremely rare, and that is an understatement.
You're welcome. :) I am always so happy to hear from others who have the same love and appreciation of Jussi Björling.
The best, forevermore!

Beautiful, warm voice!!!
Remarkable. Love it.

his voice was indeed powerful...and emotive...
Absolutely wonderful.
Det är roligt att du uppskattar Björling. :) Det gör mej alltid lika glad att se andra som känner som jag. Tack ska du ha. Kram

This is wonderful. I think Jussi's "Tonerna" is as good as his 1944 "Nessum Dorma."
Voce unica, meravigliosa ::)))
Fantastiskt!! Naturbegåvning i stora mått!!
There are obvious signs in these early recordings of the greatness yet to come. I like the Elgar salut d' ámore at the end in particular.
+sven sundquist Love "Salut d'amore' but think it was from Bizet's Faust.
