- These recordings were made for a radio transmission at the studios of the Dutch public broadcasting association AVRO (Algemene Vereniging Radio Omroep or General Association of Radio Broadcasting) Hilversum, Holland on 8th June 1939 with the Hilversum Radio Orchestra conducted by Frieder Weissmann.
Jussi was then 28 years old and six months earlier had made a sensational debut at the Metropolitan and, just a month before, at Covent Garden when he was described in the press as "the second Caruso" and "one of the greatest singers of our time".

I have tried to get the best out of the audio but there are some faults in places.

Am originally from Wales, my dear mother introduced me to Bjorling when I was a child. Once actually saw him in concert in Cardiff. Undoubtedly he was the prince of tenors. Thank you so much for this.

One of his best ever concerts, 1939 when he was singing so beautifully and lyrically at age 28.
When I first saw this comment with just a few words and no criticism I thought "poor Shicoff, he must be unwell" but I see from your later messages that you are fully recovered!!
But seriously, yes, I completely agree with you, I think the whole concert is wonderful.Also for a live 1939 concert the audio quality is exceptionally good and I think that it was genuinely live rather than a studio recording with applause added.
The CD notes say "He was invited to inaugurate the concert season at the Kuzaal, Scheveningen, under the baton of Ernest Ansermet. A few days earlier, however, Jussi Bjorling had sung the same programme at a concert conducted by Frieder Weissmann" and I found out from another source that that the concert was at the studios of the Dutch public broadcasting association AVRO (Algemene Vereniging Radio Omroep or General Association of Radio Broadcasting).

@@angelaknebel4156 I agree with you Angela but I put three tenors at the top of my list in equal first place, Jussi, of course, and two that are probably a bit too far in the distant past for you, Enrico Caruso John McCormack.. They are closely followed by various others and especially. Joseph Schmidt, Richard Tauber, Fritz Wunderlich and Beniamino Gigli. However, as you say, there was something very special about Jussi.

@@michaelmcgrailengland Bjoerling was voice wise as great later in the 1940's, but here he gave something even more of himself then in some other concerts, the Faust is sung really fantastically well and partly because he was so comfortable in his own Swedish language, as this Faust aria is in Swedish, his pure Lyric voice in its most beautiful upper reaches, but though I did see him much later in the Chicago opera house, it was very similar, but slightly darker of course in 1958, tat was almost 20 years later, still essentially the same at age 47, when I saw him in 58' as the Duke, a tough lyric role for most tenors and one that Corelli, the big voiced Spinto rage of the 1960's never sang of course. His singing would have not been best at it. In 1956 Bjoerling recorded Rigoletto with Merrill and Roberta Peters, who was then a young wonderful Gilda, at age 26, she and Merrill where also terrific on that LP recording complete, but RCA did not give us their best sound on that particular recording. The sound in the 1956 Boheme is excellent, that same year.

If you haven't already done so have a listen to the video I uploaded recently with six arias Jussi recorded in stereo on 19th Sept 1957. The audio quality is very good and, I think, shows that, even then, only three years before he died, his voice was as good, if not better, than in 1939.

I appreciated every second of this Michael...along with the remarkable collection of photos you have assembled. I have been amazed at how the splendor of his voice rings through even lower quality recordings...almost as if the recording quality does not even matter...but then you come upon a recording done with better equipment, and even more depth of timbre shines through...

Yes I completely agree with you. In the dim, distant past we used to listen to the old 78s and then LPs and the most that you could do to improve the sound was to reduce rumbling and crackling a little, you, basically, just appreciated them and enjoyed them as they were. But the new digital technology has given the opportunity to appreciate them even more and sometimes, with the very old ones like Caruso and McCormack it's almost as though you are hearing the recording for the first time.
I have some nice stereo recordings of Jussi from 1957 that I'm going to upload soon and just that small improvement in quality allows you to hear the detailed beauty of his voice more clearly.

Good job Michael! Again! This was a very good concert by Jussi. His pure, resilient, lyrical voice was at its peak here.
Thank you for listening, I was hoping that you would like this one but I'm still a bit unsure as to whether I did Jussi's voice justice. On one set of headphones it sounded right, on the other set and the hi fi system it sounded a bit harsh so in the end I decided to leave it as it was and hope it sounded good to most listeners.
As you say Jussi was at his very best in this concert. i presume that the recording was made to broadcast on radio because the CD notes say that, a few days later, he was to inaugurate the concert season in Holland with the same programme at Kurzaal, Scheveningen under the baton of Ernest Ansermet. The notes don't actually say where this concert took place.
@@michaelmcgrailengland What I would like to say is that no recording technique could do Jussi's early pure lyrical voice real justice. Especially in the treble, the depth or range is not captured. Gets like a little too sharp. I think it has to do with his tone concentration. But this is just an opinion.
With the material you have to start from, however, it is a very good job you do. There is probably a single recording from the late fifties that somewhat captures Jussis at that time more lyrically-spinto voice. Does not have it in my head right now but will come back about it.

I found the recording. I myself had commented that it sounded authentic. Getting pretty close to Jussi as he sounded. So here he is lyrical-spinto so you should not compare him with the 30s and early 40s.
When listening to this, run the highest volume. Send the wife and dog for a walk and warn your neighbors!

A sensational concert, probably his best musically but the voice was almost always very great as it is here in his 20's.

The only recording of Björling‘s FLOWER SONG where he sings the written diminuendo B flat that I have yet to hear. He could have done this at the end of CELESTE AIDA as well on the AIDA studio recording but someone seemed to have talked him out of it. This is a great compilation & the mid section of the INGEMISCO, may be the best in my experience. It matters little to me that much is sung in his native language. These performances are also included as a bonus on his live ROMEO still available on the MYTOS label hopefully.

These same recordings have turned up in other venues (such as Bonus tracks on some complete Bjorling sets on MYTOS several of which I have.) Some are among the best recordings he made of: INGEMISCO & SALUT DEMEURE (in Swedish), for example. Even at this time Bjorling could show some spinto qualities as in O PARADISO & unusual at the time he sang a diminuendo on the FLOWER Song.

This sounds like a very fine recording for the era. How was it restored?
Sounds like peak Jussi, which means peak tenor.
Thanks for listening John I'm glad that you like the restoration, it's a system that I devised myself about 5 years ago, mainly to try to improve the old acoustic recordings of Caruso, McCormack etc. CD companies seem to concentrate on simply reducing noise rather than improving the sound of the music.
I suppose that Jussi was at his peak then but, if you get time, have a listen to a video that I uploaded recently of six arias that he recorded in stereo on 19th Sept 1957.The recordings were only made to fill one of the LPs in a complete opera recording but I think they captured very well how Jussi's great artistry and vocal powers had remained intact.

@@michaelmcgrailengland I did listen to it. I also have that recording on vinyl, the 4th side of the Cavalleria Rusticana recording. That recording is the first time I ever heard his voice, over 50 years ago.

Hello Sylvia, thanks for your message. I've had a look at your channel content and two that I saw were Richard Tauber recordings with Frieder Weissmann conducting. Richard Tauber is one of my favourite tenors.
I was familiar with Frieder Weissmann's name but didn't know anything about him. I looked him up on Wikipedia and in addition to other details of his interesting life, now know that you and he were good friends. I also know that you are a renowned Sculptor and painter who has produced some beautiful works of art. Congratulations.

I'm not sure but I hear that there's a young man in South Korea called Chang who sings in the mountains and passes messages to me from Caruso perhaps he could be the third Caruso.

T there was only one Caruso, one Bjoerling , one Tucker, one Gigli, one Mc Cormack, one MDM, One Corelli and one film, concert, radio and TV singer Mario Lanza! All are unique.
