@ Silent Mind I'm pretty sure, by definition, these people were all perfect examples of being stubborn. I think people aren't exactly sure of what the word stubborn means. Everyone is getting all defensive like them being called stubborn is a bad thing. All being stubborn means in this case is that people are strong-willed and won't change very easily. That is exactly what was said and meant, and that's not a bad thing. It is good to be stubborn about your morals and things you believe in, don't just follow people and go with the flow because everyone else is doing it. Just because someone doesn't agree with you, it doesn't make you wrong.

If they can't build the road straight ahead, they don't build it at all or do dumb things like 4:07 (it was plenty of space to build the road beside the house). I'm also pretty shure at least some of the owners of the houses beside the farm would sell (just enough to get the road beside the farm). I could get it if it was a high speed rail they built, since they radius of the turns has to be enormous - but a few more turns on a road just make it more fun to drive, LOL!!

Houses can be lifted off of foundations and relocated intact, if not, in sections. There are special trailers that the buildings are transported on and, depending upon the size of the house, a space allowance on upwards of four lanes or more are required. It can cost as much as two hundred-thousand USD to move a large house only a few miles away. An Amish family in the Roaring Springs/Martinsburg, PA, USA area had their home moved years ago, and they paid in cash upfront. It's a sizeable farmhouse.

They claimed that the "for public use" was satisfied cuz the City was going to get MORE Real Estate Taxes which it could then put to "public use" for all in the community. I believe the case went all the way to the US Supreme Court, which actually ruled in favor of the Developer/City/State and against the people.

The Developer just had the State take all these homes by Eminent Domain. The people didn't even know what was going on, had no say in it. The utilities belong to the government in most countries and they can do with it as they please. These people do not own the pipes around their land, only what's on their land.

As a Chinese living in the centure of my country, take my grandparents' village as example, due to the expending of the city(WuHan), the householder living there would be offerred compensation from 1.5M to 5M RMB, depending on the area and whether has farmland or other things, and in the nearest suburb of Wuhan, the cost of apartment is just around 7k per square meter which means each family could get at least 2 apartments. The goverment is clever enough that they made a policy that the earlier you sign the contract, the more bonus(money and some gifts like air-condioner) you get. Even though, it was still hard to reach to agreement, negetiation between villagers and goverment last for more than one year. Long before the young generation had already moved out, there are only old peoples and empty house.

Apparently their governments understood otherwise they would have just killed them and their whole families, like they do when they don't agree with a citezen's decision or when they break the law...

Reminds me of the classic 1943 children’s book The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton. It’s not about refusing to sell, more about the story of a little house watching the world encroach around it and growing dilapidated and sad, missing the days of open fields and apple trees. But it has a happy ending! It’s a cute book.
