I had never heard of the word overland in 2015. I bought an FJ Cruiser in 2017 and went to my first Overland Expo in 2018 and camped there in 2019. What a difference from 2018 and 2019, the expo is gigantic compared to 2015!! Thanks for the look back.

So glad you've hooked up with a Sportsmobile, I've been drooling over them for years and would love to buy one someday (when I can afford it).

What a great video! There's something about being able to tough out ugly situations be it weather or other kinds of challenges that bring like minded people together. For me I find it fun to rough it in stormy weather testing out gear and it doesn't matter whether or not it fails, what matters was the adventure and that marks success!

Awesome!!!!! I hope the weather was a bit more accommodating this year; and you're right as rain (excuse the pun), it's all about the people. We love having our cousins from across the pond coming over to visit us. We also love what you do in other parts of the world with your mutual passion. Cheers! Sorry, I'm out of Coke! ;)

Great video. This year was my 2nd as well and I loved it. I plan to go every year. I learned something this year.
With the rain and snow and mud and cold....I will not be using a ground tent again. I was not comfortable. My tent got poked on the floor and watery mud kept getting my feet wet since I was wearing slippers in the tent and not my muddy boots.
I can totally justify spending the money on a nice overland vehicle now. Off the ground. Protected from the rain and wind and snow. Snug as abug. I was so jealous seeing you sleeping in a sports mobile in this video lol.
I am not a pro film maker but my youtube channel has had some success. Maybe I should take a film class?
    See you next year.

The smaller units with canvas pop up or extensions are fine for warmer and temperate weather but I'll stick to larger expedition vehicles for true cold weather like the Alcan Highway and for security.

Those are the guys that had to brave the Mckenzie Trail with vehicle damage right? It was scratching and shallow dents from a tire chain break that they couldn't hear with the windows up as I recall it.

The Overland vehicles are somewhat comfortable but not as off road capable. The Jeeple are similar and travel in 10-20 traffic doing 5-15 mph on desert roads with 1' whoops. They spot each other off a curb. I could not deal with with being part of their groups. Others like me may buy a Raptor. While they are good and the best off the lot they are expensive and not all that for the style they are made for. I bought an 87 Ford Bronco and built it not with the 4 wheel parts kind of shops disco kits. I have a cut and turned lifted twin traction beam lift and I plated and gusseted the beams and use long chromoly heim jointed radius arms. Tall shock tower mounts with King shocks. No blocks under the rear springs! Deaver springs and a frame to frame upper shock mount for long King Shocks. There are other good shocks like Fox, Sway Away, Icon etc.. Not Ranchos I have had in previous 4x4's I have had. Beefed up axles transmission, gears, lockers, fiberglass fenders for clearance and hood less weight etc.. Took off sway bars and cycled the wheel travel making needed clearance and limit straps and bump stops that work. While a new Raptor has 13" front and 13.9" of wheel travel. My Bronco has 17-18" front travel and 20" in the rear. I take out the rear seat for overland and this is how my 4x4 works. Links.... th-cam.com/video/OIYPKwUbzNE/w-d-xo.html over rough
    th-cam.com/video/tGPiooXsEyQ/w-d-xo.html in deep silt
th-cam.com/video/LtuWtuR2qIg/w-d-xo.html A clip on an overland 1st time on the 150 mile Mojave Road at late sunset with my Canadian.
If you like groups we do it like this....
    th-cam.com/video/tvfO78JNcJQ/w-d-xo.html
Nothing like passing Jeeple or Vans crawling over 1" whoops at 70 mph over 3" whoops toasting out the window nor spilling your drink with an ear to ear grin in comfort. :)

Ah man, had I known you were going to make it out... I would have made the trip. Would have been an honor to meet you out there at the expo. I will definitely head out there next year, looks like a really fun venue. That mud looked nasty.

That mud is the reason I'm so torn on getting bfg KO2's and BFG Mud terrain KM2's, I'm tired of havin the weather dictate whether I can go have fun offroad, I certainly don't like the basically street tires my poor ranger is on now but being 16 years old it's hard to buy mud terrains

Andrew you did not answer your own question, which was could you live in your small Toyota (The Ultimate Camper) for a year. When you embark on a life of full time Overland travel you would not be able to seriously undertake it in a converted weekend warrior 4X4. The best & only (In my opinion) vehicle is a outfitted expedition truck, either 4X4, 6X6 or an 8X8, yes these machines are large but extremely capable & very comfortable for the long haul full time over-lander. Being a very experienced & widely traveled overland reporter & journalist could you at some of these events cover a few of the larger trucks for those of us that do have these types of vehicles, to have someone of your caliber & style of reporting it would be very much appreciated as I am sure others would also be interested in seeing the larger vehicles please think on it as I have not been able to find any good English spoken coverage on them of any worth.

It's got to be a Ford Transit OR a Mercedes Sprinter BUT in saying that I must stipulate, LEAVE IT ALONE !
All TOO Many people ruin their vans by doing this and that and changing it into a monstrosity, so STOP !
Stop right there ! Buy the right van OR just put a Hammock in the back, BUT whatever you do, DO NOT make it vulgar !
Ps, ANY old sleeper-cab, Lorry will have a Battery Powered Night Heater which is easy to take out and donate into your van AND doesn't take any of the messing around that gas powered heaters do !

I heard you mention a few times you had video making seminars Do you teach people? If so please change the heading or stop teaching because this video was not about an expo but just you blabbing away The heading leads a person to believe your going to show the expo Oh we'll good thing others that make videos did what their headings said their videos were about
