    OK y'all I was hangin hard at 7th Ave South in those days w/ Steve Jordan n all the cats.He was doin the Pearl tom Gretsch BD thing ala Gadd before Yamaha. Saw him play this kit many a night w/ the 24th St Band Mike brecker sittin in . You thought the club was going to explode they grooved so hard and deep .Great memories!!!!!!!!! My favorite Brecker Bros.era

      DT-I remember those times well. I used to work there in the mid 80's but was going in there to see shows when I was technically a minor 17. Fantastic vibe many nights. Great memories and I just saw Randy Brecker last night with Stern at Iridium. He still sounds great as do they all.

      Those Pearl toms (Pearl concert toms where customized by Frank Ippolito's Professional Percussion
      Center in New York. Steve Gadd began the whole 8x10, 8x12, 14x14, 16x16 lay out, that is now considered the norm.) cut through the mix, with the Fiberglass over wood shells, they sound great, especially for the time period.

    I digitized it some time back and worked hard to keep the warm sound
    early Breckers at their best

    Boy I wish there was more video available from this concert. I believe this is the year they recorded the Atlantic Family Live record. That's one of my favorites, and Mike was absolutely smoking on Bahia, and Pick up The Pieces.

    Interesting at 9:04 there's an issue with the sound clipping...Randy looks to Mike "wow" and Mike just shakes his head. Probably because the gig was being recorded. They were still able to use it for the record, sounds great other than the mixing glitch or whatever that was.

    Epic band and epic track. I have both albums from this concert Blue Montreux I & II. Fun fact: the horn pick-up line at 1:56 was repaired for the album release. This is one of those super rare occasions I've ever heard the B-Bros. play a wrong note. Compare it to the released version here th-cam.com/video/IzOvw1nGXrU/w-d-xo.html

  • @bryandickerson5365

    Wow - this is the same as the live record, right? I bought the ‘Blue Montreux’ record when it was new at the record store and listened to it over and over! I can’t remember if I knew about the Brecker Brothers yet, but I did know that Michael Brecker was the guy that played a really cool tenor solo on ‘Operator’ by Manhattan Transfer! ;^)

    • @ewi4000
      @ewi4000  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not quite the same. Mike's solo is not on the album. Edited out.

      OK, that makes sense. When listening to his solo I was not recognizing it. Apparently they also edited out a few reading mistakes. He actually made a few clams on entrances and at the ending. It's kinda nice to be reminded that Michael was actually human!
      Thanks again for posting all these wonderful performances!

    Hey Louis, any chance you have a recording of Brecker with Mike Manieri playing Flying Colors? It’s a live version and it’s got a crazy good piano solo but there’s a Version online but it cuts off before Mainieri’s solo. Just curious!

    Lol! Brecker gets totally lost from 8:20 to 8:36. I wonder how many people in the World would notice or care? I think this is the first go at it. You see him trying to go over the chords through Randy's solo. A later, more developed one was put on the album, and it didn't have a tenor solo. Great post, thanks.

    • @waynewinborne6462
      @waynewinborne6462 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't think he's totally lost but I do think he's not really familiar with the tune. Both horns flub the melody at the beginning (1:56) and again at the end 10:26, 10:31, and 11:03. The album doesn't have a tenor solo but I'm pretty sure that Randy's solo here is what is on the LP. My memory of it could be off but I don't think so. Anyway, it's still a great band, great tune, and a great performance, however human it may be.
