  • Just a quick no frills video on how standalone ECU / EFI tuning works. Nothing fancy, but maybe it gives some of you guys a little insight on the basics of how this stuff works.

    Welcome to The Fab Forums. My name is Kyle Voss and I am a maker that produces Custom Automotive Fabrication content of all forms for you. Carbon Fiber, TIG Welding, Metal Shaping, Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Custom Choppers, and everything in between. I work hard to bring you new content on a weekly basis.
    Here are some of the builds you can find on this channel.
    I have built several Chevy trucks on this channel. The first was my 1964 C10 named Crown Spoyal and the most recent C10 truck project was the 1969 I currently have named the Black Pearl.
    I am also finishing up a custom twin turbo Ford Mustang build I call the Gray Goose. It’s a 400 cubic inch Windsor style engine with twin 70mm turbos. I am hoping to make around the 1000 horse power mark to the tires on this particular build.
    Last but not least is the one off custom hot rod build called the Bibbster. This is what I call a modern day hot rod. It’s made from an old Ford Mustang foxbody, but made to look like an old school open wheeled hot rod.
    I also feature other fabricators and shops like Cutworm Specialties hand formed aluminum wide body kit for a BMW e46. Jeb Greenstone has also built a twin turbo, coyote powered model A style hot rod from scratch, and is currently building a Toyota TE72 wagon drift car powered by a 1UZ Lexus v8. Jeb’s custom fabrication skills are fun to watch and always make for good videos.
    Check out my playlist to see some or all of these builds.

    It seems quite simple if i understand it correctly, air fuel ratio is too high or too low colour will change to yellow/red, seems quite simple compared to adjusting a carburator doing it all by feelings and listening to the engine on top of removing the carburators many many times.

    From Italy questions:
    What is the difference between working on a standalone ecu and a standard ecu?
    Speaking about the standalone i don't even know how it function, but i suppose that you shouldn't start from zero and reprogram all the ECU code probably you will change some parameters wright?
    Another question, given that every tuning in probably unique, how can you be able to know how to adjust parameters to gain something ?

    Trying to figure out the throttle tip in on my car was so hard for me. The dramatic increase of air from the blower above 1200 -1600 rpm fought me for long time. I finally was able to make sense of what the issue was but it took months of trial and error and several sets of plugs to figure out how to fix it with the different tables. Getting the WOT part was simple compared to the drivability part of the tune.

  • @Maverickf22flyer

    16 to 1? Well, that's a relatively nice lean burn for that muscled engine. I'd love to have to option to play with my Focus 3 1.0 Ecoboost 125hp engine's AFR tables and simply increase it at lower loads (for all RPM) more than it is already (I want more of the lean-clean burn), but leave the 12 to 1 where it is for high engine loads to help cool the burning mixture to not get into an engine overheat issue. Although the Ecoboost was initially notorious for ending up in flames due to getting overheated, that obviously happened when the people where abusing the engine without properly let the engine cool for a while and so the later models done by Ford had tweaked the AFR tables to make the mixture richer at higher loads and protect the engine. But still, I believe that at lower loads such as driving constantly at 40-45mph I shouldn't have an overheat issue if I have my AFR closer to 16.

    • @chrishernandez2490
      @chrishernandez2490 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely. An unfinished tune means your car is most likely not running right. If your car is running too lean, too rich, or is misfiring you'll definitely get a DTC

    100kPa is 1bar of pressure,
    101.303kPa is 14.7psi or 1atmosphere.
    The load I believe is the break mean effective pressure (bmep), which is the amount of resistance required to stop the engine from moving at the crank.
    The formula is
    bmep=4*3.14*Torque/(VolumeOfCylinder*RevolutionsPerSecond)

    • @Thefabforums
      @Thefabforums  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah...I'm pretty sure 1 bar is much more than 10kpa, that 101.303kpa atmosphere is at sea level. That number reduces as you climb in elevation. Most boosted setups run a 3 bar map which I think is good for around 30psi

    • @RecklessRegal
      @RecklessRegal 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1 BAR = 103ish kPa = 14.7ish PSI.
      The weather and elevation can change this formula though.

    • @gordowg1wg145
      @gordowg1wg145 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You slipped a zero there - 100kPa is ~1 Bar. ;-)
      Brake Mean Effective Pressure is the 'average' pressure in the cylinder acting on the piston - it gets rather complicated from there, but there are some good primers on the interweb. Pressure and force may be related, but they are different and NOT interchangable terms.

    • @DodgyBrothersEngineering
      @DodgyBrothersEngineering 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Thefabforums your right it's just shy of 30 psi, my logs showed something like 29.6 psi which was the 3 bar MAP sensor maxed out.

    There is some vehicles that have both mass air flow sensors and also map sensors sometimes multiple map sensors, why is that? Is it just to verify the correct fuel pressure?

    • @Thefabforums
      @Thefabforums  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No really sure to be honest

    • @Dannerrrr
      @Dannerrrr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Each type of sensor has advantages and disadvantages. Accuracy. During transient measurements like stabs of the accelerator pedal, you might want to read from multiple sensors to understand what's going on with the airflow, and use a hybrid measurement to calculate the fuel needed. Sometimes you use 2 MAP sensors because you want one always measuring atmospheric, and then compare that to the manifold pressure, so if you change elevation, your tune can calibrate. With only one MAP sensor, it reads the atmospheric pressure when you start the car, then just assumes that is constant.
      You'd definitely want 2 MAP sensors if you were in a hill climb, for instance.

      Every mass air car ever made (at least GM and Ford) also runs speed density, it's a failover and a system of checks and balances.

      The more they push for efficiency and performance the computer needs more information and it needs it faster
      A selection of sensors can be called for and the computer can compare all the info available to get the engine running perfect for that spit second time frame
      Rather than carb or even older efi the aim was only to get it to idle and run perfect at a set rpm/load and the rest of the time it simply ran how it ran
      Pretty broad explanation but you may get the idea

    • @fowletm1992
      @fowletm1992 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also emissions control adds a few curve balls
      Trying to monitor air flow when you have exhaust routing back though the intake (egr)
      Bypassing the maf
      They may need to monitor manifold pressures from a few diferant places so the computer can verify its self the egr is opening and closing as it signals
      You can also get some high end cars such as Mercedes limousines or other top of town oriented cars that run V8s or larger that run each bank as a totally separate engine so each bank has it's own ecu and own set of sensors
      One side can suffer total electrical failure and the car will still run
      Cause you don't want to be driving a CEO to the airport and have him miss his flight waiting for road side assistance
      Or have the car shut off when the bad guys are chasing you
      Or the good guys chasing you depending who you are
      Lol
      Watch the skid factory
      Al is doing a Toyota V12 swap and explains the 2 ecu theory in a little more detail

    I learning Micro Squirt atm. I had fi tech efi on it and it trash. Wished I had went with a sniper. But my buddy had the MS I traded a spare t5 for. Just with the base tune it's already night and day compared to that other trash.

      Im currently running megasquirt on my 13b with ITBs and i will say megasquirt is probably the best system to learn on if you're starting from nothing. I knew very little about tuning and i have my car pretty dialed in. How do you like the microsquirt?

      Jaime I haven't really spent much time tuning with it yet I'll have to get back with you on that. But I will say that with just the generic base tune my buddy did it is 10x better than with the fi tech. I was actually able to build around 5 psi of boost. Before it was breaking up real bad and couldn't get into boost and none of my buds nor myself could figure out the fi tech.

    THANK YOU. I am retired racer trying to learn a new world. I have watched sooo many videos that it is unhealthy and from some very smart tuners and venders. When they put their cursors on boost i am done. Very good at what they do but piss ass poor teachers. Very little tuning for bracket car but 90 per cent for TUrbO.
