  • In this video I deal with a situation where I had to add some crown after the fact. Normally this would be no big deal, but with an uncopeable crown its a little tricky and a little ugly making it all mesh together.

Recently found myself in the exact position with a coping challenge and after staring at it for what seemed an eternity I finally dove in. I always look at those things so critically and kick myself, feeling like a cat could pass through the gaps. In all actuality, I've never had someone else come to me and point out the areas I know to be flawed. Your end result looks great and I appreciate you sharing how you approach these tricky challenges.

Since I've found color-matched caulk for our custom cabinets I install,it gives a little forgiveness.
On a double cope (of which I had yesterday, around a tall range cabinet hiding the vent pipe),I try to cut my double mitered front 1/16 long.
That allows 1/32 per side to flex into the cope.
Since our vent hoods are ceiling height, they usually get copes on both returns.
When stained meets painted it can be a challenge, often the projection varies up to 1/4 from one side to the other on existing.
Add wavy ceilings and walls makes me happy to have learned pre-assembley👍.
This past Thursday I drilled a 3 drawer stack of drawers for the wrong hardware😶.
Thankfully our painter stayed late and fixed them,so I could install them today !
Thanks for all the tips, and content Spencer! 🙏

"Do your best and caulk the rest".
    Consider that stolen!
I also like the one I got from the Perkins Brothers....
"Yeah, it's got that far-away look...the farther away I get the better it looks!"
Now you need a sliding mirror clamp so you can see around the corners when you put something like that up!
    Great work.

what I do in these types of copes is score the trouble spots on the installed piece with a knife at a 45 and dive into it with a small chisel . this allows me to leave some meat on the coped piece at the thinnest spots. Thirty years and still coping!!!lol!

I have been faced with this problem several times, my solution is to use a plumb line laser up at the crown where the cut should be and use a multi tool to perform the cut. It's how I tie into a flex/rubber crown.

I use a table saw to cope that crown. It was a method i learned from a friend years ago and thought, "cool. Glad i know how to do that.. i will never put it to use." Sure enough, it comes in really handy with that exact crown. The height adjustment of the blade determines the back-bevel/back-cut. I agree, it really should be mitered. However, there are invariably a few instances which dictate a cope. Nice work, man. I have learned tons from you. Thank you

Glad I saw this video. I crowned my master bath using double bead - smaller profile - in three piece MDF. Well, I never coped before and decided to try it in the small room that has the commode. Using my abrasive cut-off wheel, I coped the ends and they were paper thin as you demonstrated. I was worried. Installing it was worse. It cracked. I caulked and then switched to conventional miters. Relieved to know that it might not have been me, just the double bead. I’ll try the cope again with different profile. 👍

I had a house a few years back and we had a lot of radius flex crown and it was all 7 1/4" double beaded crown. So I came up with a way to run all of the flex crown first and then cope the straight into it. I made a jig out of a peice of crown to mark the top of the flex where the miter hits, then with a multi tool just cut out the top bead. So the straight crown was mostly coped except for the very top. Worked awesome, no open meters, all tight. Mabe give it a try if the situation comes up. By the way great videos keep up the good work.

With Carolina crown, miter just the uncopeable bead and cope the rest. You can miter the adjacent part with a multi master if the part is already installed.

It's great with music! 👍👍👍 As in Hollywood movies. Council. Oak dust causes lung cancer. When you work with a special jigsaw, it is inconvenient with a vacuum cleaner hose. You can use a blowing fan. When I work on the end saw, I cover it with plastic wrap on top. Like a tent. I'm duct tape. I'm tucking in from below. I'm plugging in a vacuum cleaner. Behind the saw creates an area with discharge of air. Dust almost all flies into the vacuum cleaner. Clean.

Spencer, I've heard it said that a craftsman is only as good as his ability to cover his mistakes!! Most guys wouldn't have admitted this. I personally think you did it justice and and you commented, it will paint up fine. I always admitted my mistake to others and some could see it while other couldn't. In the end as long as the customer is happy, that's what matters. You file these away in your memory and the next time you'll remember. Just that simple. Nice fix. Ron

When doing my pre-glue ups, I will often hit the joint with my 23 gauge to ensure the lock on the outside mitres. 2p-10 is awesome but having it blow out on an integral piece is a pain in the ass.

When he bumped the crown on ceiling and it broke apart, I could feel the pain. Then that last piece wouldn’t go in and that’s where I unload a barrage of cuss words. I use a pin nailer first b/c it allows me to move the crown a bit to get better fit. Then I nail it off with brads.

The trick on coping that crown is to have a over coped sample and you need to lay it on the already up pc to see on the roll where the top miter on the bead lands and dig it out with a chisel or just cut the bead with a multi tool (miter cope) . i did a 8k house with this exact crown. started in the kitchen coffered ceiling i mitered it all but was told i can not miter the whole house i must cope it. Some people stuck in there ways. I figured it out and everthing worked out. Double copes were a pain but after doing everthing in the summer and now in the winter things still tight.

    Hey it happens to everybody.
I just finished a job when the previous carpentry , well floor installer, tried to install trim.
The base board was 1/2" off the floor, and in one location he used several finish nails to draw it back to the wall it didn't.
So they fired him, that and even nail he used nail set.
He told them would take 2 weeks.
I installed the egg crown, vase door x3 2 window casings, pocket doors to be hung, fit exact fit counter top.
    All in 5 1/2 days.
Gvr we'd that built the dining room addition a whopping 6x12 only took 6 months with s crew of12.
They would work 3 or 4 hours a day and quit, not me u show up at 7 or 8am stay until 5 or 6pm. Agreed upon withe homeowner.

That wasn't quite the approach I would have taken. You can cut in the miter on the top part of the existing crown with a fein tool. put blue tape on the ceiling to bisect the angle. It looked like you just cut 45s. But I guess it worked for you.

Hi spencer, couldn’t help but notice that you seem to have a dewalt battery on your Milwaukee nailer. Are the dewalt batteries compatible with all Milwaukee tools?

PS- don’t be ashamed of the red nailer, it’s legit. Glad you found a battery adapter to make use of all of your yellow batteries 👍

Spencer, for the longest time I thought you were robot!! I had never seen any fallacies on your channel. Nice recovery and thanks for sharing the video.
It sucks when it doesn't go the way you need it to go, I speak from experience. Stuff like that keeps me awake at night. I was surprised you didn't use Big Stretch, particularly for this job.
