Atleast won other oscar like for best special effects
And RIP Bob Hoskins and Richard Williams
And Richard couldn't not complete The Thief and The Cobbler
And also when i grow up i will become a famous film director of animation and i will won the oscar or maybe not or i don't know
Bob Hoskins was an extremely underrated and talented actor. I loved him in this, Brazil and Hook. Actually, a little piece of trivia for Pink Floyd fans, he played the band manager in The Wall movie. RIP Bob; so long and thanks for all the fish.
Hi vinne. Nice seein ya her.
vinesauce I agree. He really should have received the Academy Award that year. Even though he suffered bumps and bruises he soldiered on. A really dedicated man, he was. God Bless him and may he R.I.P.
+vinesauce Talented? No doubt about it. EXTREMELY underrated? Not exactly true. Mr. Hoskins was quite a popular and loved actor back in the days, but he just made some not so good movie choices, especially the infamous Super Mario movie (this is one of the prime examples how a bad role choice can do a lot of harm to your career). I specifically remember how he got trashed a LOT after the Mario role, even though it wasn't his fault (the whole production was a mess). But generally the audience was very disappointed, that he had starred such a bad movie and sold it with his name.
He has also been recognized with lot of nominations and awards thru his career, including a Golden Globe, BAFTA and Cannes awards. So he did got also critical recognition.
Sure, he was hard to market for that permanent "A-list" status, especially as Danny DeVito had already filled the void, so to speak (although Bob was a WAY better _actor_ IMO and in hindsight I kinda don't understand why people even compared them) and because he had chosen roles in films, that then flopped.
So long and thanks for all the fish? I don't think he was ever in any version of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the galaxy
so strange quote
GRAND DAD?
That has got to be the hardest way to act, absolute genius. R.I.P Bob Hoskins, Legend!
I agree.
He was the best actor in many films, especially this one.
Damn I didn’t know he died. Rip
Yeah, although I understand that the Super Mario movie was bad, but I usually thought Bob Hoskins did a great job at portraying Mario, I mean I don't really know what went wrong.
it's a shame
Apparently he started hallucinating the characters offset.
watching this just gave me an even bigger appreciation for his acting. dude was a fucking legend.
another great work he was in that no one can forget even if people bash the movie was Super Mario Brothers, loved the movie as a kid and i still do today just like this one
+satmtcak (satmtcak) javed
This cannot be redone in todays world even with the newer technology they had the right actors/actresses and the right crew to bring it all to life and this technology was ahead of it's time but the credit definitely goes to Bob Hoskins for making it look so real and entertaining
@@drewski1535 its truly a masterpiece. And one of the most rewatchable films of all time.
don't forget Hook the movie
"Toons... gets em every time"
It's odd that they had him ask for a spare because before that scene he asked for a drink on the rocks & said "& I mean ice" so he knew better & that cartoons take things literally
@Krispysback He probably wasn’t thinking clearly this time since he could’ve potentially died
@@krispysback He didn't ask for a spare tire. He asked for a spare. The context for that being that the toons both had parachutes. The spare he was asking for was a parachute. You only realise the gag is that it's a spare tire once he opens the bag.
Wow. I never realized it, but to pull this off so well they had a pretty good team and pretty damn good actor
saram
The mirrored floor to get actual/real reflections to overlay is GENIUS!
Now this technique is so common today that it's not a big deal anymore. However, seeing it back then, they must be the 1st people to ever attempt it, and it truely amazes me. Majority of it comes from the team but the thing that glues it together is Bob Hoskins performance. The dude had to imagine 90% of the stuff he was doing. And he makes it look so real.
+Vickram1O1
Bob is awesome.....:)
@The Pikachu Brothers Dance with Jerry from Anchors Aweigh probably was there first. It was in 1945. But there were no blue screen.
Indeed, silent black and white cartoons already mixed real action images and animation. Check "The Enchanted Drawing" (1900), Koko the Clown series (20s) or the earlier Looney Tunes shorts (30 onwards).
The idea of mixing live action with animation has been around since 1900 when J. Stuart Blackton created The enchanted drawing.
@@professorxavier3878 I think the only Looney Tunes cartoon I’ve seen that combines live action with animation is You ought to be in pictures starring Porky Pig and Daffy Duck.
why wasn't Hoskins nominated for an Oscar for this performance
Because the Oscar panel are a bunch of morons.
+no hassle yeah, ain't they a bunch of stinkers.
Jake Zolomij yeah poor fella
To be fair the brilliant Director Animator Richard Williams won an Oscar that year for his work on the film.
Gabreya Bradley Oh, I agree. The man was a genius. Did you also know that he was a circus entertainer?
I always loved that Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse seemed to be close friends while Donald and Daffy were enemies.
Just think it’s brilliant that the two studios came together and thought about how their characters would get along together hypothetically and made it all work.
Actually one of the reasons Bugs is with Mickey and Daffy with Donald is because Warner Brothers requested equal screen time with Disney cartoon stars as a condition to allow those characters to appear in the movie. There was a lot of negotiating with various studios to get most of the golden age cartoon characters in a Disney movie The film makers found a way to do it in a nice and unforced way.
I just don't see Bugs being friends with Mickey, he's way more like Chip n Dale, often the nuisance character. Donald and Daffy were on point.
@@themonkeyhand Bugs is usually a trickster on people who are already hostile towards him. Mickey is just an all around nice person. I wouldn't expect them to be enemies myself.
Well Donald and Daffy both have difficult personalities and both are very competitive. They're probably frenemies. Mickey and Bugs probably got along because they worked for different studios and knew they weren't competing for the same films so they had a healthy friendship outside the studios. They were probably even neighbors 😂😂
@@jmhorange I always thought Warner Bros was such a good sport back then to not only allow their characters to appear in a Disney movie, but also their looney toons theme to be used at the end. Whoever was CEO in the late 80's made a VERY smart decision since this movie was such a hit You probably won't ever see that these days.
Hard to believe that Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse, the two biggest names in the history of animation, were represented by just a couple of sticks during the filming of this iconic scene. It's equally hard to believe how natural Bob Hoskins seems to be in his reactions to all of this bluescreen acting. He really was a pro (RIP)!
Actually Hoskins had to put himself in a self induced hallucination so that he could be able to interact better with the Toons, so he really thought he was talking to Bugs and Mickey.
Shanethefilmmaker How the heck do you even do that? I want to do that hullucatoin LOL
Sean Tube
Well there are two ways of doing it. One is to take a self hypnosis class. The other is to eat a shit load of hallucinagenics and focus on toon town.
Shanethefilmmaker hmmm Ima try this myself. So i can interact with spongebob lol
+Shanethefilmmaker Self Hypnosis? Like Kaa?
Some people don’t realize how INCREDIBLY difficult it is to act (convincingly) and interact with things that aren’t there. Brilliant work!
Unless you're paranoid schizophrenic ;)

@@marakarthegreat jumping without a parachute? Kinda dangerous dont ya think?
Just re-watch the film and was scratching my head as to how the actor was able to interact with the cartoons and the environment pretty well (there were a few ansy moments, but they weren't too bad). It's incredible how well he behaved and a telling experience considering Hollywood's obsession of CGI nowadays. Even after watching this it blows my mind.
this comment made me cry a tear of joy!
:,)
The fact that they pulled all this off without a single frame being animated in a computer is a monumental feat. Add in that Richard Williams (the animation director) also insisted on having the camera move at the same time as the toons in many shots - and animated EVERY SINGLE FRAME - is borderline insanity lol.
Best moment is 2:49, but doubly so because of how serious the stagehand looks.
WittyNotes lol. Yeah, like “serious cheek grabbing with serious mustache” it’s almost cartoony in and of itself.
2:49 is great just because of how serious the crew guy looks.
I'm so sad to hear about the loss of Bob Hoskins . Maybe the most underrated actor of our time. RIP:
I couldn't stop laughing at how Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse were literally just poles until post production.
When I was little, I love bob for playing Mario. Now that I’m older, I realize what an incredible actor he was.
He was awesome as Mario! Great movie
@@headassofficial its a great movie
But a bad adaptation
This was so amazing, I always could have guessed he had some undetailed props or something that he was actually playing against but he did ALL OF THIS on his own. This is SO AMAZING!
Bob Hoskins was so committed to imaging cartoon characters right in front of his face over an eight month shoot that he eventually started to hallucinate rabbits and weasels in real life.
Cap
@@hollowspecs3430 how
@@PatrickBergersen It's not true
@@hollowspecs3430 It is.
"Bob Hoskins had to do a lot of his acting in front of a greenscreen, only visualizing the cartoon characters that were added later. In a 1988 interview for Danish television, he said, "I had to learn to hallucinate to do it. After doing it for six months, for sixteen hours a day, I lost control of it, and sort of had weasels and rabbits popping out of the wall at me." Hoskins didn't take another job for a year."
@@ValiantWrestling ok it is it's just hard to believe because the other side of people say that it's real and the other say it
Now that's movie magic!
+biowon There's one question that's still unanswered: How did they make Eddie look flat at 1:01?
Maybe there was a hole in the floor for him to stick his head through and his clothes were flattened? I'm just guessing.
Miss Agent E I guess that's logical enough. I bet they have holes for the hands too.
Robert Walker Oh, I overlooked the hands. Yes. 🙂
All the effects still look pretty good and aged really well.
Well, they are classic cartoons! Although incredibly well and meticulously animated, and expertly composited with a live-action performer. Still, yes, this film absolutely holds up today.
My god, acting this must have been strange.
He nearly had a mental breakdown because of it. Spend several months talking to props day in day out. After that he spent a few months in therapy.
RIP Hoskins
@@jlstuphph Really??? 😮 I didn't know that 😐 That's terrible!
Bro the actor is so good he could make the aimation actually feel real by the way he interact with the world around him
This really shows dudes acting abilities.
Today's TH-camrs only wish they could act like this
Bob Hoskins did a great job interacting with all of these scenes.
I've always wondered how this scene was shot! This is incredible! Very cool to watch. Rest in peace, Bob Hoskins.
Bob was such a great actor, his acting is a major reason why I really enjoyed Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Bob Hoskins had to do a lot of clever mime work to pull this off. Immensely brilliant actor he was.
Amazing that they pulled this off all using hand animation and optical compositing. Such an amazing vfx movie
The fact that they made him stand on a mirror to imitate the reflective floor is just incredible, considering they'd have to animate it to look like flooring. The amount of thought put into this film is astounding.
Goddamn I've seen this movie a million times but I still laughed when his hat stayed there.
Acting with an animated partner can be pretty difficult to pull off, but acting with everything but your clothes being animated takes a very good actor.
2:18
Mickey Mouse saying:
"Yeah. Ha. You could get killed. Haha haha"
Was worth the entire film.
quality acting from a legend x
,,Hi Tweetie!" 😂😂😂 Love the way he says that.
Wow to be able to work with completely nothing and still make it work (god only knows how many takes it might have taken BTW), shows how good of an actor he was!! Also is surprising how much the editing department had to erase to insert the "toon" footage, back then that must have been a nightmare!! Bob was the man and this movie was pure genius, we'll miss you Bob Hoskins.
How did they put him over the toon footage
@@jcharmaine1 Two films were made. One was made with live actors, and each frame of live action was printed up as a still photo. Then, the animation artists drew their characters around him before the two films were mixed together.
@@onemillionseven1 oh thanks
@@onemillionseven1 oh and how did they make the relfections on the floor in 'something's cookin'?
@@onemillionseven1 how did they put bob Hoskins over toon town? Like the part when hes in the building with lena hyena?
Man actually sold everything he was doing. Even today i can tell when people are on a screen they aren’t looking at what they are supposed to look at
this is dope
The movie was like a giant magic trick, one big illusion. People always talk about how good the cartoons played into the real life thing but the story was great too
holy damn....that looks like it'd be SOOOOO hard to pull off on the set....almost NOTHING to work with for the majority of it!
And now he is dead :/
WhiteWolf Darkpaw true it looks hard but imagination is the key
2:05 is an amazingly creative way to get this “falling” scene accomplished!! The wind effect on his coat really sells it!
The most impressive thing is how he interacts with that road when there’s literally nothing there! He’s holding onto nothing! Yet in the movie its flawless!
It's amazing what great camera angles and some innovation can pull off. I especially like the camera on the mini train tracks for the falling away and falling to the ground shots. Looks awesome!
Those are called dolly tracks because it's what you put the camera dolly on. It's basically a fancy cart that holds the camera with amazing stability. They're fun to use, but take awhile to set-up
Fun fact: Droopy in this is voiced by the films director of animation Richard Williams. Williams sadly passed away recently. RIP
Wow all of that emotion, all of that interaction, all of it was literally just him and a screen. He's gotta have a metric ton of spacial memory for that.
Wow ! Bob Hoskins, such an amazing talent. This is by far, one of my favorite movies of all time. Thanks for posting.
I know this is technically not an underrated movie, but it's still an underrated movie.
I dunno. Hearing Mickey giggle unsurreptitiously "Yeah, ha ha, you can can get killed!" (Emphasis on the "you" and "killed") is stupifyingly hilarious. xD
Really can't appreciate the movie without this
Imagine getting paid to pinch Bob Hoskins' cheek
dream job lol
He honestly deserved an Oscar for this movie
To this day the movie still looks fantastic. It was way ahead of its time!
To think it was just him on a stage. Watch him get hit by that cartoon car. He totally sells it. What an artist.
This is incredible. The slapstick comedy genius of Hoskins reminds me of watching Chaplin footage. And the novel ways they achieved some of these shots is amazing, what a different time for film 🎥
Rest In Peace Mr. Hoskins, thanks for the great memories
What an unbelievable achievement this movie was. All the compositing effects were done completely without digital technology. Simply incredible.
25 years later, and quality of acting and production on WFRR still amazes me. We take CG for granted today, don't even give it a second thought. But to do it all with non-computer techniques, *and* make it convincing? Good luck finding a crew now who can do that! A standard and a classic, through and through.
The fact that he didn't even have props to act with just shows how great this acting is.
Bob Hopkins is an amazing actor.
😊♥️
Makes me sad he is no longer with us.
0_0 this is blowing my mind...Bob Hoskins was truly underrated
Holy balls this is amazing. Took all this stuff for granted when I was little.
This is really impressive!
This just shows how great an actor he is, he literally had nothing to work with in the environment
"Uh-oh! Wan out a piddies."
This says a hell of a lot about Bob Hoskins's acting chops. Nice
Wednesday 28th June 2023. I LOVE Who Framed Roger Rabbit, as well as Back to the Future! Robert Zemickis is a brilliant director. Thank you so much! God bless you and have a great time. Love from Virginia Clark.?! ;) ;( :) 😀💕🌍🌏🌎
It's amazing how they took the original low-res low quality footage and upscaled it to better quality that's on the final cut...
It's amazing what could have been done in the 80's. And I saw this as a kid in the 2000's.
Can we all talk about for a second how Tweety knowingly sent a non-toon plummeting to their apparent death?
RIP Bob - you bought laughter to all generations -
Hoskins underrated as hell, not only an incredible actor, he had that ability to keep his eyeline and believability at looking at someone who wasn't really there
The creators behind Roger Rabbit pretty much made this their main priority - because you immediately lose all immersion in the world if the sightline is broken for more than half a second.
Knowing that Wayne Allwine (Mickey Mouse), Bob Hoskins, and Mel Blanc (Bugs Bunny) are all now gone tears one piece of childhood off me
:( r.i.p.
If they do follow through with the second Roger Rabbit movie, please don't fail us, Disney. Have enough heart to make the film memorable and loved.
Hence, why they should just leave this masterpiece alone. It's better this way.
And now June Foray (Lena Hyena, Wheezy Weasel)
They aren't dead. They're up in Heaven shooting the SPIRITUAL sequel. Get it?
Don't worry. When we go to Heaven we'll see them again.
this looks like an insame amount of hard work had to be done to get this movie made
What an amazing actor, and holy shit what an endeavor !
u can still remember the smell of my grandma's house when I first watched this movie 😁
It's amazing how he did the stunt work, too!
WOW, I actually would love to see how they made the scene where Jessica sings! :D
I have to say that acting is even more impressive with just the blue screen, there was startling lack of visual cues for him to act against. They had some for the parachute scene and a couple of others but most of it was just him on an empty stage.
right. like some new stuff u can tell the actor is on a green screen butbthisnlooks like he isbacrualky interacting
Ladies and gentleman, I present to you;
A master of his craft!
2:13 so, bugs and Mickey were actually sticks behind a blue screen.
The combination of practical and visual effects explained by the Corridor Crew made this movie so good.
It's weird after Tweety said "oh look piggy's", he looked more wide awake and alert but then after that he looked like he was about to fall asleep like he found it boring to play "this little piggy."
This was real hard work back in the days
MY GOD WHAT AN AMAZING ACTOR
"What's your experience as a tech crew member?"
"Well, I pinched Mr. Hoskins' cheek once."
1:01 Oh Yeah That Makes so much sense , I would of never come to think that happened in the bts
Noticed how Eddie could hold his whole weight with only a pinkie ? Quite impressive
Amazing, I have more respect for him than ever before
Gotta give Bob Hoskins some acting credits to literally act in front of nothing
1:49.....very clever technique!!
Just found out about Bob Hoskins and i can't bloody believe the man's died, but after watching this it's reminded me just what an epic legend of an actor he was. Rest In Peace Bob, you were great.
Hoskins should have gotten an Oscar nom. Hell, this film was robbed of so many nominations. I'd even go as far as nominated it for Best Picture.
Bob Hoskins was a bloody GENIUS
The two funniest things I ever saw Bob Hoskins do were Roger Rabbit (especially the above moment.) and Frasier's gym teacher!
RIP Bob Hoskins. RIP Mel Blanc.
R I P Wayne Allwine and Russi Taylor
Not too many actors these days can act with nothing this well. Goat for sure.
honestly. his timing is insane and his miming.
Best live-action/animated movie ever!!!
Wow!! Even Jessica’s car was drawn in! Where Eddie hits his head? I always thought that was real 🤪
everybody watches the smooth and incredible animation, but Bob Hoskins' acting is just as incredible!
He was an amazing actor 💔
