    It’s just amazing how every part of the production is a masterclass. The actors acting around characters that aren’t there, the puppeteers and effects people creating live action perfection, and of course the animators themselves, making the entire thing seamless and natural. I don’t think any other live action/animation mix has ever come close.

    "..to add animation to the scene every frame of live action was made into a still photograph,and the animators had to hand draw every frame on top of each photo."
    Geezus christ.
    "...no computers were used."

      Everything was animated in ones. Think about that for a second. They had to make a slight change to the character EVERY. SINGLE. FRAME. And each second of animation is 24 frames of drawing.

    The only Roger Rabbit film from the late 80s used traditional cel animation with no computers, Space Jam however used digitally inked & painted 2D animation with computers.

    THIS is what separated the animators back then, and the ones we have today.
    these days, its efficiency over effort, if its easier to do, then that route is taken, thats why most cartoons are in CGI nowadays.

      That's a different field of work, 3D artists. And they were around back then, just in a smaller field. But they still worked on films like The Abyss and Young Sherlock Holmes. Also on hand-drawn films that integrated CG like Oliver & Company.

      Saying CGI animation isn't real animation is like saying clothes made with a sewing machine aren't real clothes. Sure it's less tedious but it's still art in it's own way. They had to program a new water animation engine from SCRATCH to make Moana

    • @rckblzr
      @rckblzr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think that’s a very dismissive attitude to say that CGI doesn’t take effort.

    • @britneybritney
      @britneybritney 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@voidify3 I think they’re referring to flash animation. Like how family guy is animated today, or think of any modern day children’s cartoon. It’s too perfect, that it ends up lacking identity & soul
      CGI is kind of in its own category as usually it’s on the realms of realism.

    I think what works in this film and makes all the other films of the genre crap is that this film ogles between the hilarious side of the toon and the very mature side of the humans without compromise.
    We have some really scary scenes with the judge and some really creepy stuff. While on the other hand we have the joyful madness of toons.
    And the pitch of the film is incredible. What would happen if a toon were to kill humans? Pure genius!!!

    It would also be awesome to have the story elude to the fact that 2D animation is getting under appreciated now that CG animation is getting better and more popular.

    Mary Poppins did this first 24 years ago.

    • @LextheRobot
      @LextheRobot 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Mary Poppins certainly did it earlier than Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but by no means first. It wasn't even the first Disney movie to mix cartoons with live-action. Look up Three Cabelleros from 1944 where Carmen Miranda's sister dances with the likes of Donald Duck. Two years later, they used the technique again in Song of the South. At other studios, they had Gene Kelly dancing with Jerry the mouse in Anchors Aweigh, some 20+ years before Poppins, while in the black-and-white days Daffy Duck and Porky Pig interacted with live-action producer Leon Schlesinger in You Ought to Be in Pictures a few years before that. Other notable precursors are Walt Disney's Alice Comedies in the 20s, Max Fleischer's Out of the Inkwell series starting in 1918, and I'd even include Windsor McKay's 1914 Gertie the dinosaur, and the Enchanted Drawing from 1900 as films which had cartoons and live humans interacting, though in some of those cases the cartoons were limited to their paper pages and unable to truly jump into the real world. This list is by no means comprehensive, but should give you some fun ones to explore.
