Same thing with me and The Lion King I was so shocked when my mom told me that she took my older brother to see it when he was a child because I thought it just came out
I liked the idea of the vault as it forced Disney to revisit and remaster their films and it did make them highly coveted items. They felt rare! Because they were rare. I didn’t love it but I did love them revisiting them.
Yeah i realized that after i posted it, i was more coming from the perspective of specific movies being rereleased everytime. Like mainly the 3 collections in the 2000s were all the same movies in a different box.
In the days before VHS and DVDs, the vault made a lot of sense. Re-releasing movies only in theatres rather than tv, did make that movie going experience fresh for new audiences. we were familiar with the stories, as they featured in Little Golden Books, but it was great to see them on the big screen. And depending where you lived in the world, if they did release them to tv back then it would have been only in black and white.
Tru Confessions wasn't on Disney+ but they later added it. I'm assuming they rotate movies or they are still adding movies. I think when their stock took a dip, they started removing some content from Disney+
@davida6146 Yeah, Disney does that sometimes to release them on “Disney+ Day.” Gotta have something good. Also, thank goodness they released Tru Confessions onto there.
The popular quote "I like money" is often attributed to Mr. Krabs... Little do people know, Mr. Krabs was not the person to come up with that phrase, as he was actually quoting Mickey Mouse, who said the phrase during a business meeting 25 years prior.
They just removed three Disney Channel shows on Friday, I guess they’re back in the vault. I can’t really trust Disney+ anymore. 😭 They removed Saturdays, Pretty Freekin Scary, and Hailey’s On It! I didn’t like the last show, but I liked the first 2 and it’s sad that they barely promoted them and only gave them a year to live on the streaming platform smh…
I don’t understand why removing it, wouldn’t more shows make the platform for appealing? I get that it costs money to have them on it, but Disney is definitely not short on money
Yes, exactly! Now they’re probably gonna LOSE subscribers cause some people sign up to watch a specific show smh. Disney never fails to disappoint me.
You don’t like Snow White because you’re watching it from a modern Disney perspective. You’re not understanding that the sound effects were all practical, the art was all hand drawn, and that it was the first ever full length animated feature film that inspired a whole generation and legacy of movies. You have to take yourself back in time and remember that nothing like it had ever been done. In fact many people laughed at Walt and called him crazy for trying to make an animated movie. The movie however received a standing ovation and shaped the landscape of animation. Please show a little more respect. It simply was not meant for your time.
In other words the movie doesn't hold up then if you actually have to take yourself back to when it came out. That said I like it but I can see why others don't
The reason “16 Wishes” isn’t on Disney+ is because Disney didn’t make it (completely). It was a co-production with MarVista Entertainment. MarVista owns the rights to the movie. Disney Channel just distributed. Similar cases with “Radio Rebel” and “Zapped” which feel like Disney Channel Original Movies but weren’t fully made by Disney.
Thanks very much for doing this video mate and you have a new subscriber :) 6:17 ooooo I dont know about that. The genius behind the movie is the fact that it was the first feature lengh animated movie and its execution of comedy timing, music and caring for these characters based from a fairly simple book. Just gotta see it from the point of veiw of those from 1937, especially since it inspired a whole new generation of family movies like the wizard of oz etc :) ha, but its fine if your not a fan. all the best mate
Also the Bluray versions of Snow White, Cinderella, The Sword in the stone and many others look awful because they applied digital noise reduction, so the definitive versions are the 4K Ultra HD editions (The Sword in the stone only exists in Disney+). I also hate that these new "definitive" collections don't include the 3D Blurays! You can't say it's "definitive" or "collector's edition" if you're missing one format.
@ That you don’t like something doesn’t mean there aren’t lots of fans that love it, the fact that they keep releasing 3D movies in theaters in 2024 means there’s still people that watch them, it’s just that Disney decided to not let us watch them at home anymore
You forgot about the 3D era, were they released Lion King Beauty and the Beast and Little Mermaid in 3D. The only way you could see that is if you have a 3D Blu-ray player a 3D TV and the 3D media of those three respective movies. You would think in the era of digital movies you could request a 3D copy of those movies but no there is some economic politics going on about people hating on 3D because of what happened in 2011 of us promised Super Bowl in 3D that got retracted because of 2D incompatibility. After that, it became virtuous to attack 3D. People were willing to pay $200 more for a TV that was unable to be 3D than a TV that had 3D built in, exact same year, exact same brand, exact same size, exact same features other than 3D.
I thought you were going to talk about how the quality of the Blu-ray/DVDS and Disney plus equally going down since plus. Before they announce Plus I was collecting my childhood to show my niece and it was full of hours of extras, scans, etc... After Plus each release is missing more and more and Plus was the one to one backup in the beginning, now it's down to a trailer or two and maybe a behind the scenes compared to when I bought the Aladdin Blu-ray and it's digital format unlocked. All of that stuff is backed up perfectly on Plus but a Turning Red or Soul or Encanto is bare bones in comparison and this is in a time where everything is digital and only needs a flip of a switch to release more. Finally Blu-ray is the same thing nowadays, bare bones of it is available.
The reason for the Disney vault was because Disney realised that keeping movies on sale over time would drop meanwhile during this time, the next generation of fans would be born. So they would re-release these films for the newest generation of young kids to enjoy and grow attached to before the movies would disappear again. Those kids would grow to be adults with nostalgic memories of the movies and have kids of their own...que Disney releasing the movies again for the new generation..rinse repeat. It was BRILLIANT marketing that they were able to do for decades until the medium evolved. Disney vaulting underperforming movies and shows from Disney plus doesn't lead to people clamouring to buy them on DVD or blu ray instead people move on to other shows/stream services or simply Pirate the shows. I watched the mighty ducks game changers on Disney plus but they stopped making new seasons and then removed the show altogether....so I downloaded it.....
There was actually sort of an attempt to recreate the theatrical re-releases with Disney+ day. Where they would show various Disney films in theaters. But it seems to have ended. Personally I think they should bring it back and maybe make it more event like. Double features or more stuff if you go?
You completely skipped the television aspect. Because the classic movie _The Wizard of Oz_ is a direct beneficiary of the Disney vault. When television was first starting to become a mainstream thing, they wanted to air movies on television. Specifically tv stations wanted to air Disney movies. But Walt Disney said no. They were still very profitable in the theaters, and if people were paying to see them, it didn't make any sense to give them away for free on television. So they aired _The Wizard of Oz_ instead. And thats how Oz became a classic film. Because believe it or not, Oz actually wasn't a big hit movie when it was released. It only became popular decades later through hundreds and thousands of TV airings of Oz throughout the last 70 years.
I was completely unaware, in the video i was mainly focused on the collections. Because there are so many nuances with the Vault that I wanted to keep it focused on one aspect. But thank you for this, I will try and do better on future uploads
You forgot about the Walt Disney Classics Collection (where the Disney Vault thing started home media wise), the Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection, and the Walt Disney Gold Classics Collection
Even worse than 16 Wishes, there's one Walt Disney Animation Studios movie not on Disney+. Make Mine Music has a very rocky road with rereleleases, and Disney+ is no exception.
I think that part of the reason why "16 Wishes" (2010) isn't on Disney+ is because much of its production was done by "Family Channel" in Canada. Which doesn't completely make sense, given how a decent array of DCOMs were filmed in Ontario and British Columbia before this.
It was really big in the late 80s and 90s with VHS cassette. It started with the Classics, then the Masterpiece Collection, before coming out on Disney DVD. I believe there is a deeper business reason for taking the movies off the market and then releasing them every seven years. That happens to correspond with the copyright ownership of a title and renewal of that title - so if they’re releasing that title every seven years, they can say they still have ownership of it. So the making kind of monopoly of it and prevent competition from bringing out major motion pictures with the same title, subject matter. I saw Song of the South in 1982, last time it was in the theaters and have an European release of it, I think it’s heartwarming. And I think it should be brought out with a warning of a time that it is depicting in American history.
I remember those advertisements for the Disney Vault during the 90’s. There a lot of Disney movies / cartoons that’s not even on Disney+ and it’s so annoying since I really want to watch cartoons I grew up watching but they never released them physically or digitally and it just annoys me. It’s one of the reasons why I prefer to own things physically because you never know if they will get removed or go missing or even censored.
I have a Day One copy of the Signature release of TLK, and the first run had a collector's edition film strip as a prize. It has all the LaserDisc special features fully remastered in crystal clear quality, includes a lot of bonus features from other releases... And the DVD included in the first run appears to be a conversion of the RealD release in theaters because they accidentally deleted Mufasa's cloud layer in the disc, so you can watch a version of the film that doesn't include Mufasa actually there during that pivotal scene, ha ha ha 😆
@@reeceprime Yeah! I found this out while ripping the DVD to use for footage in an old video edit, and found this out because I'd only been watching the Blu-ray disc up into that point. They just repackaged an old release for the DVD disc in the pack, or at least used the same files and didn't bother to double check, lol. Not surprised, to be honest. Disney has always had a track record of dropping the ball on thier releases. For example, in 2007 ((and in the 2011 reissue)) Darkwing Duck's series release on DVD only had 54 episodes of the 91 episode series put out, completely ignoring the third season, put the episodes in airdate order instead of production order ((meaning that any continuity is completely shattered when, for example, QuackerJack makes three major appearances before his debut episode in this lineup)), and reused the menu system for Volume 1 as Volume 2's menu... And didn't even bother to change the episode numbers to reflect that, and even used footage that is slightly muddy in some episodes... And they have yet to re-release the series again in "full" unless you pay for Disney+, and even then, they changed the aspect ratio slightly and apparently pulled a few scenes and a whole episode. There are episodes that have never been properly released on home media in America uncut, and only outside of Disney's services through fans circulating the German release with English audio tracks as video files. Presumably, Disney has stuff in "The Vault" for the series, because they've released concept art sketches and special information a few years ago as an anniversary thing. Surely they have the entire series waiting to be rendered on a box set, it's been nearly 20 years since the last time...
Is there even a disney film outside Song of the South that carries any physical value? Once D+ launched almost all the home media took a nosedive in terms of prices online. You can piece together a legacy set of all of Disney now for an insanely affordable price
The Disney Vault isn't really true and is just a clever FOMO marketing trick. I managed to pick up Jungle Book, New Groove, Cinderella and Lady and the Tramp DVDs about a decade after they came out. Always check your local stores and bargain bins. 👍
Even as a kid I knew all the rereleases were just cash grabs however there were some movies I wish I had because they had better bonus features. I remember my cousin had a copy of the Jungle book that had an extra of the Jonas Brothers singing ‘I wanna be like you’. My sister and I would play it all the time but after he moved we couldn’t watch it, way later my mom found a copy of the movie in a bin but because it was a later release it didn’t have that which was disappointing.
You want to know what made no sense during the diamond edition releases? They had standalone DVD variants of the movies, which seemed to not be mentioned by disney as existing. These releases are different from where disney offered the diamond edition blu ray in dvd packaging, these quite literally only had the dvd, and were more basic than the platinum releases. Disney Movie Insiders gave me a standalone dvd copy of sleeping beauty diamond edition, and I was so disappointed with it that I actually want to just buy the platinum edition.
I've watched Song of the South, it sucked and not for the reason you might think. The racist elements are pretty obvious to anyone who understands US history and even American history in general. Plus from what I understand even back then people were calling the film out. Staying away from such a whitewashing of history is one of the positive things Disney has done, but that's not saying much. There isn't much to say on that front because Song of the South is part of a larger issue with the legacy of racism in this country and people trying to rewrite history involving slavery. As a movie, Song of the South's real crime is being really a lazy, repetitive clip show of a movie. This is a oversimplification but you have a little white boy who meets Uncle Remus, white boy's dad is gone somewhere so Remus becomes like a father figure telling him Brer Rabbit stories. The animation and stories are lighthearted and cute and all but then little white boy then applies what he learned almost to the letter meaning that as the viewer, you're seeing the same events twice once animated and once live action. You can remove the racism out of the movie but it's hard to remove the boring out of this framing. Even if the movie was not trying to whitewash history and was super progressive, having the same thing happen multiple times like that with little else is not fun.
I think the racist elements get overstated, especially when you consider when it was made and what the other movies they are willing to release are. But, you're definitely right, it's a good movie in terms of being technically innovative and having great music, but the movie itself is pretty bad, and I think the fact that it's not a good movie is probably the real reason why it's locked in the vault forever when more racist movies like the Davy Crockett ones get an explanation at the start.
I don't like the movie but I don't really see it as racist. I see a lot of people saying it takes place during slavery, it does not, it takes place during reconstruction (apparently Disney was asked to specify that back in the day and they didn't which was really dumb on their part) at one point Uncle Remus was going to leave, he couldn't have even considered that if he was a slave.
I remember when the blu rays were so expensive on eBay and now there not anymore, Disney + killed the value of the blu rays. I had John Carter Blu Ray 3D I sold it for $120 before Disney + came out.
Don't let them hide their shame. If the movie is even half as bad as the trailers are, that needs to be something that stains their reputation for decades.
7:05 you’ll be surprised to know that Song of the South did indeed get an official home release! Throughout the 90s, they released it on VHS and laserdisc in a good handful of European countries, as well as Japan and Hong Kong up until 2000 when Disney discontinued the movie altogether. However it has never been released in the US or has had a DVD release anywhere, but it has indeed escaped the vault, so anytime you see the movie pop up online or find any bootleg copy of the film, there’s a good chance it’s a rip from the UK VHS.
Yes, although from what I understand those were all foreign releases. I have a bootleg copy and the movie isn't a very good one, the only thing about it that's good is the sound track and the quality of the way the animation was mixed with live action. But, really, the whole business of it being offensive is massively overstated when you compare it with other things that Disney will release, the Davy Crockett films in particular are incredibly offensive in their dealings with the various tribes he was involving himself with both in real life and in the movie.
Its silly the Song of the South is not being released by Disney. The film does have its issues but it is significant from a historical point of view for the company and should be available to the public uncensored.
Disney using cheap noatalgia to safe their dying brand. Nothing new here. They are doing it right now, with there unnecessary sequels and live action remakes.
Having a copy of the Song of the South and having watched some of the stuff that is on Disney+, it's kind of a head scratcher as to why SotS is so offensive, when Davy Crockett is OK to be streamed now. Considering that most of the people taking issue with the movie are too young to have actually seen it, it seems kind of backwards minded and ignorant when the film itself is kind of a mixed bag. It's not something that I would personally support being made now without a lot of changes, but it was arguably kind of progressive in the sense that you had a major character being played by a black actor, the black characters do get one up on the white ones several times during the film and it was based in black culture of the South that probably wouldn't have received any sort of promotion to the rest of the country otherwise. The movie should be re-released so that we can at least make a decision based on the actual merits, or lack there of, rather than on what people were told about the movie based on having seen it decades earlier.
7:20 no no, try and seek the movie out. Its up there with Derby ogill, marry poppins and so on and its really sad that it'll never truly see the light of day. especially since its the first to have live action and animation in one movie. Its hardly, offensive. Maybe a disclaimer at the begining about the subject matter, thats all
I doubt it, Disney has, on the whole, been better about preserving their stuff than most other studios have been. It's why there are still film copies of most of those movies that are in good enough condition to affordably transfer multiple times for new digital media. It's a bit of a moot point as there are copies of the original theatrical films out there that have already been scanned to Blu Ray sizes, so there's probably more out there and allegedly, the movie is already public domain in some parts of the world.
@@1993digifanNot really, it's going to probably still be controversial in 2041 which is when it will hit public domain and they can't really make money off it then.

Same thing with me and The Lion King I was so shocked when my mom told me that she took my older brother to see it when he was a child because I thought it just came out
Yo i remember that too. Like they really hyped it up like it was the big new thing.
"Not including any of the direct-to-DVD sequels".
Actually, it did include Return to Neverland and Jungle Book 2.
This is cool! I didn’t know that
Those 2 sequels you mentioned were released in theaters.
I’m waiting for shows like house of mouse , buzz lightyear of star command and Tarzan animated series to be Disney plus
same!!
I liked the idea of the vault as it forced Disney to revisit and remaster their films and it did make them highly coveted items. They felt rare! Because they were rare. I didn’t love it but I did love them revisiting them.
This did not start with DVD. They did this back in the 80s & 90s with video tape too.
Yeah, this was either rushed or badly researched
Bruh you missed three collections (the black diamond Classics, the Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection, and the Walt Disney Gold Classics Collection).
My biggest regret is getting rid of all our VHS tapes so many great Disney VHS from the mid to late 90's early 2000's
They don’t have 16 wishes but something as old as Wendy Wu is crazy
They removed Saturdays, Pretty Freekin Scary, and Hailey’s On It!
Moon Girl and the Devil Dinosaur got removed in some countries.
Nice video man 🔥
Thanks very much for doing this video mate and you have a new subscriber :)
6:17 ooooo I dont know about that.
The trailer for the 2011 70th anniversary DVD and Blu-Ray release of Dumbo(1941) was hype as heck as a kid
3D is just a cheap gimmick that barely did anything
@ That you don’t like something doesn’t mean there aren’t lots of fans that love it, the fact that they keep releasing 3D movies in theaters in 2024 means there’s still people that watch them, it’s just that Disney decided to not let us watch them at home anymore
You forgot about 3d Blu-ray Disney releases
@@reeceprime your video was great.
The Wizard of Oz was public domain at that point, it probably always would have been shown on TV, just because doing so was practically free.
@@SmallSpoonBrigade the books are public domain. Not the 1939 movie. That movie doesn't become public until 2035.
You forgot about the Walt Disney Classics Collection (where the Disney Vault thing started home media wise), the Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection, and the Walt Disney Gold Classics Collection
I did NOT realize the amount of time that had gone for those things
The collections started in 1984.
Even worse than 16 Wishes, there's one Walt Disney Animation Studios movie not on Disney+. Make Mine Music has a very rocky road with rereleleases, and Disney+ is no exception.
I think some song or story in it needed to be re-licensed or something.
@@mattwolf7698 Peter and The Wolf became copyrighted in 1994
I think that part of the reason why "16 Wishes" (2010) isn't on Disney+ is because much of its production was done by "Family Channel" in Canada. Which doesn't completely make sense, given how a decent array of DCOMs were filmed in Ontario and British Columbia before this.
Atrocious Snow White take.
16 wishes was produced. By Marvista Entertainment and Unity Pictures Group it is NOT a disney production it was just shown on the disney channel
I have a Day One copy of the Signature release of TLK, and the first run had a collector's edition film strip as a prize. It has all the LaserDisc special features fully remastered in crystal clear quality, includes a lot of bonus features from other releases... And the DVD included in the first run appears to be a conversion of the RealD release in theaters because they accidentally deleted Mufasa's cloud layer in the disc, so you can watch a version of the film that doesn't include Mufasa actually there during that pivotal scene, ha ha ha 😆
wait i think i have this? i had no idea about that, bout to rewatch it tonight!
When I was young, I used to ask my family to buy the animated Disney movies on DVD’s along with the sequels before the vault would get them.
Is there even a disney film outside Song of the South that carries any physical value? Once D+ launched almost all the home media took a nosedive in terms of prices online. You can piece together a legacy set of all of Disney now for an insanely affordable price
I think some people caught on to the Disney vault trickery.....but their voices were drowned out by the mega-fans.
Disney does own hulu though 😂
8:07 also directed by Peter Deluise. That itself makes it good
"Pirates know no 'Time Limited Exclusives'
-Just How Stupid the Disney Vault is in the Internet Age.
The Disney Vault isn't really true and is just a clever FOMO marketing trick. I managed to pick up Jungle Book, New Groove, Cinderella and Lady and the Tramp DVDs about a decade after they came out. Always check your local stores and bargain bins. 👍
this is a great video, subscribed
i appreciate it! thanks for the sub!
Song of the South should be re-released. If you ignore the past, you're doomed to repeate it
Everyone has their tastes and point of views, mine is that I would consider Snow White the be the best movie Disney ever made.
I watched most these from renting them from the library
Snow White is worth the hype
You want to know what made no sense during the diamond edition releases? They had standalone DVD variants of the movies, which seemed to not be mentioned by disney as existing. These releases are different from where disney offered the diamond edition blu ray in dvd packaging, these quite literally only had the dvd, and were more basic than the platinum releases. Disney Movie Insiders gave me a standalone dvd copy of sleeping beauty diamond edition, and I was so disappointed with it that I actually want to just buy the platinum edition.
dude what? that sucks!
@reeceprime It truly does
pretty sure Song of The South is on youtube. it was on the archive before that went.
I still own Tarzan and cars on vhs just because of its value
My favorite Disney movie is Aladdin and The little mermaid, I do like to get a dvd for It even the squeal.
Snow White is celebrated because it's a film milestone. It is historic and groundbreaking for its time
I remember when the blu rays were so expensive on eBay and now there not anymore, Disney + killed the value of the blu rays. I had John Carter Blu Ray 3D I sold it for $120 before Disney + came out.
Physical media is still king.
The live action snow white deserves in vault.
Meanwhile they won't give Gummi Bears a decent full DVD release...
Most of the Disney and Pixar movies currently on home releases doesn't match the versions released in theaters.
Disney using cheap noatalgia to safe their dying brand. Nothing new here. They are doing it right now, with there unnecessary sequels and live action remakes.
Dying brand? Bruh, null periods are normal for big corpos
The Disney Vault is honestly not that bad of an idea, it made the older titles felt more special and more viewers on the title.
7:20 no no, try and seek the movie out. Its up there with Derby ogill, marry poppins and so on and its really sad that it'll never truly see the light of day. especially since its the first to have live action and animation in one movie.
Its hardly, offensive. Maybe a disclaimer at the begining about the subject matter, thats all
VHS went into the vault and DVD blue ray
Do you think Disney burned all traces of Song of the South from the vault?
Probably
No
Likely no, just in case at some point it can be a source of profit for them.
Why Mario Galaxy Music in a Disney Video?
Or you could just rent them from Block Buster
The Disney Vault is dead now that Disney+ exists.
Yep, which makes this a particularly good job to snap up whatever DVDs and Blurays are available, including any previous editions if those are more to your liking.
Yes, though it's possible that in future Disney could decide to make only a selection of their stuff available on D+.
WTH was The Disney Valut? bossman Imao
Lucky i know a "legal" way to get these
☠️
hop off snow white
