Did she expect the men to say: "Well, now that you're here we might as well allow women in from now on". Imagine it would have been a couple of men entering a women only/girls only? Maybe I'm thinking the wrong way but I don't want to be somewhere where I'm not welcome anyway. I mean I can survive brilliantly without being a member of a club.

      @@martinamoskale2445 can you though? You can survive, but perhaps not so brilliantly. These are places were powerful people meet to make deals: its exclusivity is meant to keep you from having any such opportunity, so not only women, but anyone excluded suffers. I actually like the idea of clubs, and exclusivity, as it brings together like minded individuals with a set of common rules regarding attire, music, etc, but I can see the issues that arise when power and business is mixed in: it creates a further obstacle for others to get necessary contacts. That said, I don’t know how to fix that, or how one could ever try to: even if you close such clubs or remove exclusivity, people can just meet in their living room and these guys can afford mansions...

    There’s a confusion here. Nowadays, virtually all Gentlemen’s Clubs have female members, but women have always been allowed inside most Gentlemen’s Clubs - but only as guests, and only to certain areas. They were not allowed to be members or vote, just as men could not join Ladies social groups. Clubs really existed because upper class gentlemen who were not fully occupied (didn’t work but had private income) needed somewhere in Central London to go, eat, drink, refresh, change (dress codes for day and evening wear were strict) between meetings and activities without having to go all the way home. Ladies did not work or even go out unaccompanied in the city. Nowadays, clubs are far less formal but still used in the same way, they are meeting, dining, drinking and entertaining places for like minded, same-profession or same-politics people. There are many new clubs for new professions, that’s what Soho House was originally, like the Groucho Club, a club for the upper echelons of the TV and film industry, though now Soho House is just a mass-market national/international business admitting virtually anyone who pays.

There are plenty of bars, houses of worship, schools, gyms, etc. where men and women can spend time together.

    The reason for the decline of these clubs in later years is in large part due to the upsurge of the modern mancave. They are in essence the exact same thing.

      What's a modern mancave?

    • @Dampfish
      @Dampfish 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@user-ov2fc5sd1e A mancave (or man cave) is somewhere a man can retreat to, sometimes with friends, and generally just hang out without the risk of being judged as behaving childishly etc. Nowadays it's usually the room of the house where they keep for instance a gaming console/computer, home cinema, wargaming table, shelves of comic books or collectibles, or whatever really. Usually decked out with comfortable furniture.
      Every man has one, in some form or another.

    • @kencur9690
      @kencur9690 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What? Lol nonsense. These people already had “mancaves” - they had whole mansions: they don’t need the “invention” of dedicating a room in the basement to put their PlayStation in. I mean, wtf are you talking about? How would a mancave compete with this when they could have easily had one (and did) and not just relegated to one room but to whole wings and estates? In fact, if this and a mancave is the same thing, why not just keep these since they are, according to you, just one big mancave.
      There are special privileges that a club gets from being listed. Ironically and despite the immense wealth of members, in many cases they get tax breaks and even subsidies (well, no surprise there: taxes are for the poor).
      The truth is that these clubs hosted a distinct class of people: affluent and classy. Some would say aristocratic. These people still exist, but the business world has been inundated with other kinds of “entrepreneurs” of a rather shady background. It’s the same reason taste in attire has changed among the rich: tasteless bling bling is what sells most these days. Even cars like Mercedes have changed from elegant vehicles to “more aggressive” styling. BMW changed their grill to satisfy the Chinese market.
      It’s a different business world out there, one with celebrity rappers, Russian mafia tycoons, and Chinese nouveau riche. And these go to night clubs, not gentlemen’s clubs.That’s the real reason these clubs declined.

    • @Dampfish
      @Dampfish 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kencur9690 Wow, you really missed my point there.
      The reason I compared the two is that the clubs were always a way to "get away from their wives" so to speak, and that is essentially what a mancave is (somewhere men can act immaturely without worry of being judged). And since it has been made more affordable to put aside even a sizeable chunk of your own home purely for leisure nowadays, the ability to make these kind of spaces have been democratized, therefore these clubs aren't as important or prestigious anymore and have declined in popularity.
      I won't deny that the kind of favours you're talking about actually happens, because they do, but the way you describe it makes it sound like some clandestine conspiracy when the reality is far less exciting than that.
      It's natural that if you're in a club with other people you get to know them and possibly grow quite close, but the atmosphere in these kind of places is much closer to boys dorm than it is board room.
      And yes, you do have a point about the business world changing from when these clubs were at their peak. Of course it has. Some of these clubs have existed for a couple hundred years at least. It's inevitable that things change. I never claimed my point was the only reason they declined, but it was certainly a contributing factor.
      Although re-reading my comment now (9 months later, I might add) I can see how it can be interpreted as such.

    • @kencur9690
      @kencur9690 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dampfish I didn’t miss any point, you are simply wrong. The decline of these clubs has nothing to do with the emergence of the mancave (and this within the lower classes who weren’t members of these clubs anyway!) How can you even think I missed the point when I pointed out that the two are clearly unrelated. Perhaps you are the one missing my point.
      These clubs were not meant to “escape the wife”. You have no idea of history it seems. Women were already barred from rooms *within* the house: there was no need for a special club in the city. A gentleman would have a study, a smoking room and even a billiard room where he would spend time with his guests. Wives were forbidden. Once again, the rich and affluent already had their “mancaves”, which is a new concept only for the working classes which, as I already said, were not even members of these clubs.
      The gentlemen did not even care about women’s opinion, much less being “judged” by them. The democratization of mancaves has absolutely nothing to do with the decline of clubs which were and are entirely undemocratic to begin with. You are assuming a phenomenon affecting mass society to be the cause of another phenomenon affecting a small, privileged portion of it, which is entirely silly.

    I was excited to watch this as I used to work in a Private Member's club in London (Home House). Then at the 6 minute 18 second mark I found that you have footage of two of my old bosses! I should say that Home House is not a Gentleman's club, as it is open to men and women. It's kind of an anti-club in that way, it was (when I worked there) trying to expand its membership and the male/female ratio seemed to be 50:50

    • @leangrypoulet7523
      @leangrypoulet7523 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Home house is more of a private ‘hotel’ than gentleman’s club. Many of the traditional gentlemen’s clubs in London don’t have bedrooms that are as well appointed as those found in HH, they’re more places to fall into after a hearty dinner rather than a place to stay when spending a weekend in London.
      Traditionally (as highlighted in the piece) most London clubs were used by men who resided in London or at least had a home in London as well as the country. Their purpose was to offer fine dining, drink and some entertainment (gambling, snooker etc), away from the main residence, the family and the wife. And being private, away from the masses.
      With the explosion in dining, drinking and partying available to all people, at all levels of quality/price in the 80s and beyond, those traditional reasons for joining a club have become less valid. Now they offer some sense of privacy and calm in a bustling city, away from tourists, the masses (still) and the constant noise of a large metropolis. What’s more, they do so with like minded people and, once you’ve paid your membership fee and subs, often at a price far lower than equivalent eateries and drinking establishments in the same corners of London. Further, you feel welcomed as if you are a regular, the staff and members know your name.
      And given the political elite always came from the gentry, networking within a club was not its main purpose, as you’d be as likely to meet the same people at dinner parties, country estates, within your regiment etc. However, much like the expansion of access to ‘lifestyle’ for the masses in the 80s, so access by the masses into the political classes has meant that the clubs now offer a place to ‘talk shop’ away from the proletariat, similarly for media, television etc.
      All you now have to decide is where? If you want a traditional feel and level of service, the established clubs are where you would go. If you’re young, wealthy and a little more hip, then Home House or Soho House would be your spot. Both just as exclusive as their predecessors, just more modern.

      The rules excluded membership to anyone “who has not travelled out of the British islands to a distance of at least five hundred miles from London in a direct line”. In 1819 most people wouldn’t have travelled out of their village, let alone crossed the channel (70miles from London and 20 miles across) and then travelled at least 400 further miles on the Continent. We’d probably be looking at less than 1% of the population and most would have been military, landed gentry (doing the Grand Tour) or seafarers. Different Times. As you say, you can now travel to the opposite side of the globe in 24hrs, something that would have been unachievable to most when the club was founded and for those that did make it would have taken months (if not years in some cases) and required the constitution of a true explorer.

    I was also a resident in Brooks cub as a staff member, the clubs are closed at the week-ends. I was allowed to take my parents there and have them stay for free in their exclusive members bedrooms over the weekends. Sleeping in four poster beds where world leaders and princess have slept in.
    I wasn't at all impressed with how the so called gentlemen conducted themselves and how they treated the staff. I would be serving them food from the buffet in the dinning-room, so I had firsthand observations of how they present themselves away from any cameras or public eye.

      Sure. For some basic general background - wife's father is a member. I'm American, she's not.
      As for the reason why I said it was interesting - as someone coming from a random small town in a backwards part of the United States, I was not used to the type of tradition and setting, I found the entire atmosphere interesting. As for their policy of men's only - I'll reserve judgement.
      Lunch was served on the 2nd floor dining room overlooking St James's st. So next time you walk by the white marble facade, look up - that's the dining room. There are other private dining spaces but not reserved for typical weekday lunch.
      The one dinner I attended was for a birthday of another member and they had reserved a space for a group of 8-10. The club printed out menus w/ the host's name, with a little "celebrating the birthday of..." a 3 course meal, and a few choices of wine the member had requested ahead. The other interesting thing is - most of the food is rather simple, and unfussy and not the decadence one may think. Mostly British w/ French influence as you may expect from a place like this.

    Living on the other side of the world, the clubs of London will never see my face. However, it is my understanding that these are private establishments run by and for their members - so if the members say "gentlemen only", surely women should take it on the chin and do their own thing. I have seen many organisations, and been a member of one when the local Parliament passed an affirmative Action act which force many, like the Jaycees, to accept female members. Those women who joined then proceeded to take over and destroy it, and quite proudly announced that that was their intention from the start.

      You don’t have to be from London. Most clubs (not just London but in all major cities/towns) offer ‘country membership’ which offers reduced rates as you will likely visit far less often and perhaps only at weekends. Further, many clubs have strong networks with other ‘affiliate’ clubs, both within the same country, but in different geographical locations, or abroad, allowing members access to other premises and facilities all over the globe as if they were a club member. Be a member in London but enjoy lunch (or even stay) at a club in Singapore etc etc.

    The reason people have a problem with the traditions of the aristocracy is because they’re not part of it. If you offered a duchy to the biggest objectors they’d be straight in the clubs. Whether you like it not, class distinctions exist and men and women are allowed to be different and should be allowed to avoid each other if they want. Christ, half the aristocracy’s female population are probably counting on these clubs to get their husbands out of the house for a few minutes. If you don’t like the clubs, don’t go there. But don’t ruin it for others because you’re an insecure female desperate for male attention despite your anti-male sentiments. Don’t hear anyone complaining about all female gyms.

Even if I did, I would still have a problem with it. The two are not mutually exclusive, and my problem with is born of reason.
      By the by, the comparison with gyms is silly. A gym allows you to exercise, which really can be done anywhere. These clubs are a bit more serious than “if you don’t like it don’t go”: it is a hub where business is made, and is therefore a place which ensures the status quo is kept, that money and power rests within the already established tight circle and that those class distinctions are kept healthy. In fact, it is the primary reason and raison d’être behind these clubs. It’s a bit more sinister than just having a laugh. And these exclusive practices are indeed questionable, so much so that businesses aren’t allowed, for instance, to create cartels and collude to stifle competition. Well, the same things happen here: they can have exclusive premises to do what is otherwise against competition law.
      Things are not so simple.

      I mean, if they are free to have these exclusive clubs where business is done behind closed doors, why aren’t businesses then free to simply for cartels, following the same logic?

    Did Orson Welles know nothing of the Garrick Club, named after the greatest actor his age and specifically open to actors and other creatives?

    I think Savannah, GA would be a good site for a women's club.

    So that's in England. What must this phenomenon look like in other countries? The gentlemen's clubs of Japan? Russia? Saudi Arabia?
