It completely blows my mind that the ENTIRE complex went up like this, end-to-end… I’ve seen so many fires like this and even the most basic building codes and decent construction can effectively isolate a fire; at least to an extent where you don’t lose the entire structure or other exposures.
This is just an example of something that should be totally impossible. 😕

The American way of building surely has its advantages, but one serious setback is the increased fire hazard. The closeup at 4:50 pretty much shows that the entire structure is about 100% flammable! The building ITSELF is the fireload - not what's inside.

How does an ENTIRE building like this go up so darn fast, you may ask yourself? The answer is modern buildings are made of sawdust, glues, and plastic. Modern lumber is also grown really fast, and harvested very young. Therefore much lower density, and thus faster burning. All of that burns REALLY fast.

I'm a volunteer FF and just like your brother we just do what we can when the alarm sounds. No matter what the weather or time of day we go and battle the flames that destroy the dreams of the people of our town. Sometimes we are lucky and little damage is done and times we lose, and the family loses everything they worked hard for. That is why I encourage home owners to have insurance to cover for this type of lose, even if you rent so that you can restart your life with a fresh start.

In 1979, Tulsa Oklahoma, we had 178 apartments go up just like this. Common attic spaces, limited fire walls that were breached, high winds, difficult access to buildings, long hose lay for supply. The fire ran faster than we could keep up. Residents were moving belongings out of apartments as the fire progressed. The apartment complex was down the street a couple blocks from the nearest fire station. Became an inferno within 10-20 minutes

My home just turned 100 years old. It is built with very thick wide boards. It's very solid. I hardly hear storms when they pass threw. My brother's house was like 25 years old, and I felt very unsafe in his cardboard house. I often told him that house was 2x4's and pressed wood. I would never live in a new home.

First thing I thought of from the start. I grew up in a two family house built in 1918. 12" thick solid poured concrete foundation, balloon construction, fire wall from the basement up but not all the way up. Loser cousin set his mattress on fire on the second floor. It got up to that common cockloft....and away it went.

I grew up in a small town and ended up on the volunteer fire department. If we had 11 firefighters at a scene, 10 were actually working the fire (assistant chief or chief is calling the shots). At this fire I see A LOT of firefighters standing around. I see fire equipment being under utilized. Granted, the building had no firewalls, but IMO, it looks like the firefighters have the opinion "Oh, we'll just let this burn to the foundation." We only did that twice, and ironically, these two houses were next to each other (but only one burned at a time). Both houses were only 20' by 20' and made entirely of wood and were at least 50 years old, and both were fully involved on our arrival. Glad I don't live in the Nashville area.

@@kentcarter835 Hi. I don't know if your comment was meant as a compliment or insult. In the 1970's, we had booster reels on trucks and we used them on every single fire. Every time. Within 30 seconds of arrival, we were putting water on the fire. We aggressively fought fires. I see so many YT videos where they are pulling 2 1/2 lines, stretching them out all over God's creation and waiting 5 to 10 minutes to put water on the fire.
The way firefighters are trained today, to make an analogy, is tantamount to a football game where the offense takes a knee on every single play and then their defense watches as the other team scores on five straight drives before they actually do something about it. It's frustrating as heck to me.

In my opinion, fault lies with the city of Nashville, they decide what building codes and life safety codes to follow and it is up to the building inspection department to review the construction plans before construction begins. Then to make scheduled inspections during construction to insure compliance. It certainly appears changes need to be made. An adequate water supple also appears to be an issue.

Agreed, this is a common problem
With this type of construction. They need and new construction in certain states require these buildings to be fully sprinklered even in attic spaces and be compartmented thru out with 2 hr fire separation. Sadly the lax on building codes with allowing fully type 5 construction aka wood instead of ordinary or fire resistive due to cost measures. Plus fire alarm system monitoring water flow and tampers and any non residential areas with system smoke detection. Of course hard wire interconnected smokes thru out residences and co detection shall also be installed.

It's a little more complicated than that. Code officials have a lot of responsibilities. For one, the codes are adopted by the state and the municipality can make certain amendments. It's not like the city is writing their own code. The IBC/IRC codes are also usually adopted later. For example: It's 2022 and some states might be using the IBC/IRC from 2013 (hypothetical). While there might be reasons for this, it's important to note there are usually critical changes to the int'l code which affects things. For example: we are in a seismic zone here. Products for anchoring brick-for example-require more reinforcement but the code is looking to limit how much steel reinforcement goes into a wall so they've made changes to the code as it's written every 3 years but that doesn't mean it's adopted every 3 years. This is out of the code officials' hands. The other thing is, they absolutely do review plans and specifications for conformance. As an owner of a building materials manufacturer I can tell you we are constantly sending product submittals, testing data, manufacturing COCs, QC compliances, CSI specifications, and even raw material COAs. We check, double check, then triple check that we send the correct building materials where the general and subcontractors are properly receiving materials and doing all installations and construction exactly how the manufacturer specifies. Code officials are just one part of the equation. There are a lot of people and procedures that go into building a structure of that size. Shit happens.
The one thing I believe you're saying is safety is paramount. If you're saying that, I agree with you 100%. Safety meetings are a big part of construction and there are a ton of OSHA and state-run department regulations and SOP to be in full conformance with. But code doesn't have everything in the prevailing code. That's why in the IBC or IRC they use trade codes such as the ACI530 for masonry or ASTM (American Standard Testing Materials) standards for materials.
Changes do need to be made but one thing is, with building codes, changes are made every single day in construction as well as fire codes

Ok, I'm no firefighting professional, I have zero experience. I'm just an armchair gawker. However, in the first scene when I saw ONE hose on that fire, I about freaked! That is a fairly long building and it appears that the fire spread so fast that the entire building appeared to be burning evenly. As if someone had started it along the entire length at the same time. I realize that those attics are sometimes connected, but the entire BASE was burning pretty well. How would that happen?
Now you know why I'll never live in a wood-framed apartment building EVER. It's bad enough in a wood-framed house, but I can control fire safety in my house much more effectively than trying to control fire safety among 10 different families. You never know what fire risks your neighbors are presenting at any given time.... in a wood-framed building.

There’s usually no fire 🔥 breaks in any apartment complex. Even older apartments, but they do take on a safer design, due to the brick 🧱 walls between each unit. Even if one unit is engulfed, it usually won’t spread to adjacent units. If it does, at least the fire 🔥 will be greatly slowed down on its spread. Even newer day wooden 🪵 apartments still can be made safe by fire 🔥 breaks. Sprinklers are another option. I guess everybody wants to cut corners on safety of these buildings. Doesn’t make sense when human lives are lost. Your friend, Jeff.

There should never be pressure issues like this there should always be multiple mains to pull from anytime there's a very large multi-family structure like this. Also did anyone find out what kept popping in that far left unit? Was it ammo, lines arcing, possibly fireworks?

@@davidhelsem8794 That makes a lot of sense and begs the question as to why the framing for each individual unit is not required to extend into the attic space clear to the roof. This would isolate a fire and contain it above the unit where it started at least long enough for fire fighters to contain it.

I’m not one to criticize, especially firefighters, because firefighters are the ones you can depend on the most, but ether the apartment complex was a fire boxes just waiting to burst into a Inferno, because of bad construction, or It had to be the dispatcher, that was the middle man between the caller and fire department. So what happened someone Drop the ball, on this one, I hope know one was hurt, or killed. The only thing I can see happening was know one called or wrong address, because this fire was going going a long time before water was used. Let’s hope this never happens again.
