1:45 We traveled to Green Island yesterday on that very same boat, the "Reef Rocket", but you couldn't stand in the front where you were because of the massive wind and waves. The island itself was pretty cool. We chose the glass bottom boat to view the coral reef.

not sure what your plans are in Brisbane, but a good day trip is Stradbroke Island (you can book a day trip), Tangalooma Islands you can snorkel amongst shipwrecks (may want to book accommodation for one night as its a bit of hike from here), if you are in central brisbane there is Southbank as its called with museums and free 'beach pool',. Mt cootha where you get a full view of brisbane and there is a cafe there and there are small hiking tracks, then one hour either north or south of brisbane there is the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast with their own sets of beaches! No crocs there!

I love straddie! So easy to do so cheap, without a tour, just catch train to cleveland, ferry walk on & use the circular bus for the day. Then a beer at the pub on the hill overlooking the ocean after doing the gorge walk. tops!

I live in Cairns and it really is the best place to live. Great weather, beautiful scenery in all directions and a nice lifestyle. I’d recommend actually going to the outer reef or Fitzroy instead of Green Island (it’s the last place I recommend for people going out on the reef) but it still looks like you had a nice day. If you can, get to the Atherton Tablelands or the Daintree - my favourite places in the region.

My jumping off place for the Great Barrier Reef was Port Douglas. Then we took a wave piercer out almost 45 minutes to the reef to snorkel. A-mazing!

    • @pl434
      @pl434 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Correction.........it took an hour and 45 minutes to get to the reef where we snorkeled. Well worth the long trip out. We were told the reef is strictly controlled and they grant only a certain number of permits to be able to dive and snorkel. I remember the platform being owned by a company called Quicksilver. I am not sure if it has any affiliation to the clothing company of the same name. Gabe, are you going to try to visit at least the edge of the Outback? Definitely worth the experience. We also visited an Aboriginal community, but prepare a bit in advance because travel into some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities require a permit, similar to visiting a National Park. Well worth the information received from the native people-so interesting. I would not leave Australia without a deeper understanding of the Aboriginal people.

I am Greek and I have an uncle,my father's younger brother, who joined the merchant navy back in the 60s and at the age of 17.He embarked on his first trip and he ended up in Brisbane, where he decided to settle to for ever. And that's what he did and he never came back to Greece, ever. While I was a little kid I used to hear stories about him and in my mind he became something of a mythical figure and because he chose Australia as his home,Australia became mythical too.I am a grown up man now (actually very grown up) and still I had never the money to make a full visit to Australia because it is so effin' expensive.Meanwhile through the years I met Australian people and getting to know them I made a new term about them - Meditarranean Brits ! I mean, they do speak English but they have this other, almost mediterranean mentality. They are very open hearted people, very friendly and also really hard-working and dedicated to what they do.I like them very much and actually one of the best Internet friends I have ever made was a fantastic gentleman from Melbourne, who sadly passed away some years ago,due to skin cancer.Which is a major problem in South Australia,I've read somewhere.Other than that,I love australian cinema and music, especially the left-field and independent ones.Anyone remember Dead Moon, for example ? Or the Nicolas Roeg movie Walkabout, maybe ? I wish I'll make it to Australia one day,for a long visit,to see as much as I can and this must happen before I die,lol 🙂

I've always wanted to visit Cairns, as well as the Whitsunday Islands, both of which are in Northern Queensland. Cairns reminds me somewhat of Naples, Fla, except that Naples has nice beaches bordering the city. The weather looks ideal, and the Great Barrier Reef is obviously a must see. The weird thing for us North Americans about Australia is that it gets warmer and more tropical the further north you go. It seems counter-intuitive. Anyways, enjoy the rest of your stay down under and keep up the great work with the videos!

Every thing is the opposite in the Southern Hemisphere. The further South you go it gets colder because the closer you get to Antartica. Fun fact you may or may not know: In the Northern Hemisphere---
water swirls down the drain in a counter-clockwise direction. In the Southern Hemisphere---water swirls down the drain clock-wise. Everything is backwards.

Also FYI you can sometimes see crocs sunning themselves in the city on the mudflats. It's not for swimming just like you wouldn't get into the Harbour at Darling Harbour and swim. But the beaches in Cairns are 15mins North of the city centre & are absolutely beautiful. I would recommend swimming in nets though and always be CrocWise.

Hi Gabriel. It's been so interesting following your adventures. It's a shame you suffered so much from jet lag and were unable to reorient to the time zone. A tip for travellers, you really need to resist the urge to sleep when you get here. Try and stay awake at least till 7 or 8pm on the day you arrive. Enjoy a nice, long and refreshing sleep and your body clock will adjust pretty quickly. Being on holiday but always heading out to see things in the afternoon on spec limits your opportunities and you end up paying such high prices for things and missing the best of a location. The meals you have shown us on this trip alone have really been eye-wateringly expensive. I wouldn't have considered Green Island to be the best place to try and appreciate the Great Barrier Reef, nor do I remember Cairns as a boring, muddy place infested with crocodiles. Then again, when you're in the tropical north you do become hyper-aware of your croc-etiquette, and I think we chose other places to swim, like on the reef itself, or further south in the Whitsundays. Your Cozumel experience can easily be found in the shallows off many islands on the vast reef with a little more planning. I hope things improve for you on the rest of the trip as you haven't had the best experiences so far.

Unfortunately coral reefs are dying mostly because of the global warming, I know healthy coral reefs in Egypt which are right next to popular hotels, but where is a cold water current, and I've seen dead coral reefs in Indian Ocean where tourists are rare, but the average water temperature is about 30 degrees Celsius.

    Good video,
There used to be a lot of fish around Green Island as depicted in your Mexican video about 20-30 years ago. It may also be seasonal and tide related as well. If you go to Kuranda you can get the train up via the waterfall and the sky rail back for about 100.00 Aud. Otherwise you can save some money buy getting the public bus up from the CBD for 7 bucks and the sky rail back down to Smithfield for 50 bucks, where you catch a public bus back to the CBD.
P.s The turtles are mainly around Lady Musgrave Island off Bundaberg.

The further north you drive out of cairns the nicer it gets. If you get a car you can see a lot in a day…. Cape tribulation is stunning for example. Mosman gorge would make good footage also

Yes & if you go to Mossman Gorge then head to Shannonvale swimming spot. It's a local spot that locals go to to swim in the fresh river water. No Crocs there & after you get out of the water you feel amazing from all the oils of the leaves that end up in the water. The feeling is amazing.

Gabriel Hopefully you will get to see some neat areas . You haven’t mentioned sharks , but I guess they are just a few of the critters that you have to watch for while around the water . I remember watching the Olympics in Australia , and they had net like fences to protect the swimmers in that ocean water event .
I hope that you will plan to go to New Zealand on this trip !
Thank you for sharing your adventures with us ❣️

You are making me feel homesick. Been living in the UK since 2009. Another nasty creature in Cairns is the blue ringed Octopus. You should head up to Kuranda, and if you have a car go to Cape Tribulation.

You lucked out, there is great diving and snorkelling there. Fiajt coam, sea cucumbers, turtles, rays, sharks etc.... such a shame it didnt turn out for you with limited time. You should really get to the Kimberly and Pilbara regoin, thats mire your adventurous style. Its wild and less touristy and you have the Ningaloo reef fringing the shore. The best part of the great Barrier reef in in the open ocean for diving..

Cairns and nearby islands look great, tropical and clean.
    Although:
I thought the veggie burger & chips, two scoops ice-cream & drink lunch cost at $47.00 AUD was on the high side.
The other issue are the Irukandji jellyfish which inhabit the Australian tropics. They are very small and very poisonous and can attach themselves to your face even if you are wearing a wet suit. They can be deadly and can cause a lot of pain to the survivors.

In Darwin you have to worry about salties near the mangrove swamps, stinging box jellyfish and great white sharks. The Barrier Reef adds venomous sea snakes and stonefish with toxic spines. I managed to avoid these on a visit from Canada. Gorgeous scenery.
