What amazes me is that they do all these various covers just to pass the time and they do them so well; let's not forget they are full time musicians who spend most of their time touring and performing their own music.
It's been 4 years Fil, it's time for another Larkin Poe performance analysis. :-) The problem is that there have been so many great performances in those 4 years that it will be hard to choose just one ;-)
These girls are awesome! I've been watching them for some time, and never saw a performance I didn't like! I love their raw, stripped down covers they do. It really showcases the amount of talent they have. Not many artists can sit down, with 2 guitars in a block room, without auto tune and lots of effects, and sound incredible!👍😎🎸🎶
74dart man If you have never seen them in person you owe it to yourself to catch them live if they are anywhere near you. I saw them open for Elvis Costello in Memphis in 2015, and they were absolutely amazing. They even played a few songs with Elvis Costello. I’m sure I’ll see them again in the near future myself, and they added a drummer and bassist to the band last year so that should be an interesting change as well.
Great analysis of Larkin Poe. I haven't been following them long but they are terrific. Especially in harmonies like you pointed out. Thank you for this video.
Great video. You described perfectly all the things I love about these two. Seeing them live is an even bigger treat. This video was made at the behest of Guitar Center for Dolly Parton's birthday last year. The video was recorded backstage during the time the Lovells were opening for Bob Seger. They are no longer a part of Restoration Hardware, the last 2 albums were published under their own label, Tricki Woo Records.
This is my favorite cover of this song. As haunting as Dolly's vocals are on the original for my ears Rebecca's are even more so. These two ladies really are something special.
This is what I love about TH-cam (I won't mention what I hate about it). I have dicovered so many artists, singers songwriters, cover acts, and a KILLER music Analyst like you, Fil. TH-cam has enabled so many talented people to be heard and discovered.
They grew up singing 3 part harmony with their older sister Jessica as The Lovell Sisters Band. Straight Bluegrass. They were very good. Jessica (violin) quit to go to college, Rebecca (mandolin, guitar) and Megan (Dobro, Lap steel) formed Larkin Poe. Their music has gone through a lot of changes during the past decade, and their sound is unique. A mix of Bluegrass, Pop, Rock, Blues music It's all been good, some of it great. They seem to have settled on Blues based Rock the past few years. I highly recommend delving into their catalog
Fil is a such a great advocate for artists to be independent. We need such voices to encourage young musicians. Plus he encourages them that they can actually create and sell music that is not dependent on autotune!
Isn't it a refreshing thing to see such accomplished artiest that can play and sing together anywhere, just sitting in a room and come up with a performance like this. Love the analysis Fil.
Great analysis and commentary on the industry. These ladies are so talented, and take such joy in singjng and playing that they are always a pleasure to hear and see.
Beautiful! I'm embarrassed to say that I've seen the name but never stopped to listen. I definitely will check out more of their videos. Thanks to you and whoever suggested the analysis.
Thank you for doing this band, they are so talented. Thank you for the way you explain and break everything down, it is a joy to listen to the way you focus on all the different elements, I learn things about music I’ve listened to for years from watching your reactions, again thank you so much
Wonderful job as usual, Fil. Larkin Poe is one of my favorite bands and your insight has given me a little better appreciation of their talent. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for taking a look at them. They´re outstanding artists! Saw ´em live two times yet and was always deeply impressed by them! As you said: the homogeneity of their performing, singing as well as guitar playing, is one of the things that make them so strong...
Great analysis Fil! Many thanks! I started following these two around Nov 2017 after I saw (on TH-cam) their rendition of Preachin' Blues. Great stuff.
I am French from Strasbourg, born in 1950, at the age of 13, my first guitar teacher was BB King (by vinyls interposed). The beautiful BB King star which shines up there is certainly impressed by the talent of Larkin Poe, the magic sisters of the Blues. Thank you Fil for the nice analysis. Larkin Poe deserves maximum encouragement, and Jo Bonamassa was not mistaken playing on stage with these angels. Larkin Poe méritent un maximum d'encouragements, et l'ami Jo Bonamassa ne s'est pas trompé en se produisant sur scène avec ces deux anges.
Thank you for choosing these ladies. I think their work is amazing. I would love to hear your analysis of Rebecca's cover of Chuck Berry's Johnny B Goode.
This version is one that gives me goosebumps and brings tears to my eyes. So hauntingly beautiful. These women are just so good at their craft. I really like the "Tip Of The Hat" series of covers. Great music! BTW... Rebecca was recently married to Tyler Bryant, who has a pretty fine band called "The Shakedown".
Another great analysis. My favorite is Rebecca and Meagan taking on the pre-war blues masters Son House, Skip James, Fred McDowell, Leadbelly, etc. They come alive when playing the blues, especially Meagan on slide. Thanks Fil.!
Second day on the trot you give me something new. I'm obviously missing a lot being a retired grumpy old man in China. Had to do a quick google of course, that led me to "Hard Time Killing Floor Blues", "Preachin' Blues" and more. There is still life in the music business!

Agree entirely with your analysis Fil. I've listened to a huge amount of varied music over the years and I can honestly say these two women are my current favourites - they seem totally comfortable playing covers or original material. Rebecca has a great voice and is a talented guitarist. Meghan provides seamless support vocals and adds another dimension altogether on lap steel guitar. As you say Fil these two sisters have the ability to change the dynamic on any song they perform which always makes for something extraordinary. I also like that they are very articulate and can talk about their music in detail. For me, these two are edging into the Beth Hart, Joe Bonamassa, Richard Thompson category of music - and that is the very best!
So pure and unpretentious. Very talented young ladies. Happy you featured them. They, like you, represent hope for independent artists in this day and age. It really has to be a way of life and a bit of luck in sorrounding yourself with other dedicated like-minded artists. Substance abuse destroyed many of those I played with. Problem I had was that we were overly ambitious in the type of music we wanted to perform and it took many hours of practice to create new music or learn impossible ELP, Yes, King Crimson, Rush, etc. covers. We would get some attention, next thing you know drummer has a near death experince and then try to replace someone who has that level of ability. There was no internet.. This is why I stopped trying to make a living out of it. Larkin Poe will be better known thanks to you Fil!
Thanks for the review, Phil. You´re profound knowledge is appreciated. And I don´t know where else to say it, but everyone please shut up about Bonamassa. I´ve hardly ever seen such a technically accomplished guitar player with soooo little feeling for what he does. Thanks.
Been a huge fan of those girls since I saw them do a 30 minute live PA in a small bar local to me, back in July 2015. No surprise to see them making waves and building a reputation as very, very talented musicians and songwriters. Definitely one of my favourite artists.
Fil, funny you mention Restoration Hardware. I've shopped there many times here in California. It's always a treat to have you mention something from my neck of the woods in your videos. Love you, Fil, thanks for all you do! 😍

Totally new to me Fil! These two young ladies have beautiful voices and are so confident performing together! Excellent! Great analysis Fil! Cheers Mario! 😀🤘🤘
I saw Larkin Poe in Peoria, Il a couple of years ago. They were amazing and I have been a fan ever since. Thanks for the review! Consider an analysis of The Sheepdogs from Canada.
Always a good time..... once again I'm watching a video I wouldn't normally watch...... & loving it ! 😉 That's the reason I stop in every night ...... then we get the analysis & back stories 😎🤘 Thank-you Fil ✌😎 Request: Edgar Winter and Rick Derringer playing Frankenstein with Ringo Star's Allstar band in 2010 Since Halloween is just around the corner I thought inmthis might be a good " treat " ( I couldn't resist 😃 ) Thanx again Fil !
Wow. This was great. I have been trying to learn Dobro - this girl can play. One thing I find difficult with the dobro is the strings are off the frets so there is no tactile feedback if you are off. One thing that I see with the top players like Jerry Douglas is they are always looking at their bar hand to ensure they are exactly over the fret.
These girls are so good! Love their harmony and they are very talented musicians also. I will definitely be looking up more of their music. Really interesting story of how they have handled their careers. Fantastic!
I, too, have never seen nor heard of Larkin Poe. I thought they started out slow, but they actually scared me when they ramped it up, lol. I really enjoyed the way their voices blended together to cover this beautiful song. I'd like to hear more from them and will definitely check them out! Lots of 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙 from Lisa!!
I just have to say Fil, I do hear some powerful singing. That is the gift of live singing, ..you get to learn about it at the time that you hear it!! ❤✌
The two sisters are just amazing Mad as a Hatter, Don't, Jailbreak, and their great covers! Megan and Rebecca are sensational musicians, their supreme playing and harmonies are stunning!
Must be the song, because I have never heard a version I haven't liked. That aside, these women can sing. I will have to listen to more of them. I went back as far as 2014. They are getting better. Heck, they played with Joe Bonamassa and Paul Shaffer
Like you brought out, they seem to "play" the room, or take advantage of the room acoustics and balancing the instruments and vocals on the fly. These two are so creative and dedicated it will be interesting to see where they go in the future.
Brett Phelps I saw them in Memphis on the Detour Tour in 2015. It was one of the best concert experiences of my life and been going to concerts for over 30 years.
Nice analysis. Searching through your catalog, I couldn't find Elliot Randall of Steely Dan's Reelin' In The Years fame. Such a gifted and underrated guitarist. Hope you consider doing an analysis of him.
should check out there cover the Band's Ophelia. part of Megan and Rebecca Lovell and there tip of the hat series. so great harmonies and slide guitar from the Lovell sisters
Brilliant. I'm personally taken in by their positivity as performers. My personal favourite "bed-room" tracks are 'Running with the devil' and 'The Thrill is Gone' (but many of them are really good), and as for their stage performances "Peach Music Festival" is decent video and sound (even though i think Rebecca has a sinus infection). On stage they occasionally make a call-response thing where Meghan mimics the voice of Rebecca on the lap-steel. Those are the golden moments :-)
@@westmus your link made me realize that the call response- thing is more credited to their showmanship, than their virtuosity/improvisation skills (I have just revisited a lot of their concert stuff on You Tube). They may have started as improvisation, but they have clearly been rehearsed and improved upon later. Very urgent: This is not a negative critique of their performance, merely an adjustment of my perception :-) You can see for yourself if you check out the "God closes a door" bit from their "Peach music festival" video (set list in the video description). I still like the girls very much and have a burning wish to see them live.
I've seen a video of them, and they "go to work" sort of as part of their creative process. They see it as their job, and have a very strong work ethic, they play off of each other, and know each other very well. It's as if they each could finish each others sentences, and sometimes do.
FIL, THANKS FOR THE VIDEO AND YOUR GREAT COMMENTS, LAP STEEL & RESONATOR GUITARS ARE MY BEST FRIEND, I ALWAYS WANTED A PEDAL STEEL, YOU HAVE TO BE A MUSICAL SCIENTIST TO PLAY ONE , ROCK ON, COUSIN FIGEL
@@slowbluesmaster Interesting that you mention War Pigs in a thread on Larkin Poe. The Lovells have recorded A War Pigs cover in their living room with Rebecca doubling on kick drum. They bring this song to life with no session musicians. In fact, Rebecca plays some ten different instruments, and the Lovells have made their last two recordings playing nearly all the parts with no session players. th-cam.com/video/Vj4SJolBPt0/w-d-xo.html I love First Aid Kit. These are talented sisters with integrity and musical subtlety. All of us have heard them on the radio for many years. You won't hear Larkin Poe on the air ever. First Aid Kit has enjoyed much more commercial success, but no one familiar with both groups would seriously argue that Klara and Johanna inhabit the same musical peak as Megan and Rebecca. Both pairs of sisters seem to have integrity and independence. Some things are hard to understand.
I LOVED this so very talented duos rendition of Jolene!! These young ladies performed this song excellently. Much , much, more enjoyable than Miley Cyrus' version.
Interesting what you say about signing to labels. Winners of the TV Sing Off Pentatonix were signed to to Sony as part of the prize, Sony didn't know how to market an a cappella band and failed to give them the next part of their career after the boost of TV. The next year's winners, Home Free, took the contract but forewarned by Px started building on their (temporary) fame to create a live shows/YT career. They bought themselves out of the contract after a few years with no loss of momentum. Their lead singer is often asked why he isn't signed to a major label for his solo stuff but he knows your contract is likely to be gathering dust while your career languishes if they can't pigeonhole you.
Thanks for covering these ladies. As other folks have mentioned, they were originally The Lovell Sisters Band from about 2004-2009, pure Bluegrass, until oldest sister Jessica resigned from the group to go to college and get married. They had a whole different sound than what Rebecca and Megan do now. Plenty of Lovell sisters live performances on YT to check out. (just a suggestion...) I'm including the links for two of my favorites. Unfortunately, the audio volume on both of these seems to have been turned down in the last year or two. But you could turn it back up. My favorite song... an original... When Forever Rolls Around. Jessica on lead vocal. th-cam.com/video/GrFOkP4Q0sg/w-d-xo.html
Another favorite of mine. Cover of "I've Forgotten you." Rebecca on lead vocals. In 2006, at age 15, Rebecca won the MerleFest mandolin contest. Youngest person, and first female, to ever win it. th-cam.com/video/tS4MPBUvSGM/w-d-xo.html
I have known about these girls for a while now. I believe this is part of their tip of the hat series (as the playlist is called) they're a breath of fresh air in the modern music world.
I embarrassed myself first time I saw them on video. I saw them and thought, oh, an artsy girl band. Then they played and I realized that they were awesome by any measure.
Hi, Fil, THANK YOU SO MUCH for finally analyzing Larkin Poe, who are my absolute favorites. Your analysis absolutely hits the point. The interaction between the two sisters is just incredible! In this performance the really express the drama of the song. Rebecca and Megan are making music since baby age, they are performing since they were teenagers and their expression and soul is deeply touching. I would be very happy, if you would check out one of their live performances with a full band setup, one of the best on TH-cam is their appearance on the Spring Leaf Festival (an independant one), you can choose any of their songs there, they have it all: great musicianship, great songwriting, great interaction with the audience, great performance, enthusiastic playing, superb vocals: th-cam.com/video/r-bZ-UQezbw/w-d-xo.html Thanks again, also for your discipline and steadyness of producing such competent and insightful videos on such a regular basis! Extra thumbs up!!
Fill, you will absolutely love this one of Larkin Poe. First time I've ever seen this version. Absolutely haunting. Rebecca wrote this one when she was 17. Its about her grandfather losing his mind to Schizophrenia. Her father's father. Later on it extended it's meaning to the girl's grandparents from their mother's side, with Alzheimer's and dementia. It's called, "Mad as a Hatter" Do a reaction to this!! th-cam.com/video/U8QKE-Q43W0/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for reacting to Larkin Poe! I might have suggested this one when you did a reaction to Miley Cyrus's version of this song. These sisters are so talented and can literally play dang near any genre. Their versatility is amazing. Their main direction is blues/rock, Americana. They grew up as bluegrass players, but always had an affinity for classic rock (their parents influence) and later a massive affinity for traditional blues. There is a massive amount of material on TH-cam of them performing live, both their original material and paying homage to their influences with covers straight from their bedrooms or hotel rooms. Here's enough selection to keep you going for quite a while!! It's somewhat chronological. From most recent to the beginning. Check it out!! 🤘🏼🎸🎶🔥 th-cam.com/play/PLAOGal7pIOOjFmgnfF5rqPCJsORje73Lq.html
One of my favorite artists Is a band from Canada. Afie Jernigan brings his unique style of guitar playing to the stage (usually) with only a drummer and two backup singers. Please, (if you have a chance) listen to his group "The Bahamas"'. In particular the I Tunes festival performance. 2015? Many good to great songs of which he has been nominated for 'Juno' awards by the Canadian Music Industry. Of course the ending song is always a barn burner. Thanks, very honest and no BS in this channel.
these ladies are the best thing to hit the music industry in a very long time. I truly hope that they get the recognition they so deserve.
What amazes me is that they do all these various covers just to pass the time and they do them so well; let's not forget they are full time musicians who spend most of their time touring and performing their own music.

It’s so fun to meets new artists. Song is familiar, but doing it differently than Dolly Parton is so amazing. I loved it.
Excellent analysis with light on so many aspects !!!
I wonder how Rebecca gets this almost acoustic like sound....
Maybe an acoustic amp ?
Big fan. Saw them in a club in Seattle. Great show, great music!
You are a busy boy Fil with all of these analysis videos.
Always a good time..... once again I'm watching a video I wouldn't normally watch...... & loving it ! 😉
That's the reason I stop in every night ...... then we get the analysis & back stories 😎🤘
Thank-you Fil ✌😎
Request: Edgar Winter and Rick Derringer playing Frankenstein with Ringo Star's Allstar band in 2010
Since Halloween is just around the corner I thought inmthis might be a good " treat " ( I couldn't resist 😃 ) Thanx again Fil !
Lots of 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙 from Lisa!!
professional since childhood, toured with, opened for and backed up Elvis Costello. They release a cover weekly. New album do out June 2020
Larkin Poe are fantastic. I can't wait to see them live.
These two are so good and I am surprised they are not hitting the big time.
I do admire these sisters, bless them deeply. Rodge David Kidderminster UK
Must be the song, because I have never heard a version I haven't liked. That aside, these women can sing. I will have to listen to more of them. I went back as far as 2014. They are getting better. Heck, they played with Joe Bonamassa and Paul Shaffer
Megan kicked Joe Bonamasa's ass. He bailed in the end!
Rebecca's guitar playing is improving , but still doesn't come close to her mandolin .
Like you brought out, they seem to "play" the room, or take advantage of the room acoustics and balancing the instruments and vocals on the fly. These two are so creative and dedicated it will be interesting to see where they go in the future.
You could have picked any Vid. these ladies have and it would have been exactly the same breakdown. They THAT good!
Saw Larkin Poe with Elvis Costello a few years back...they are terrific! (As is Elvis Costello of course)
Brett Phelps
I saw them in Memphis on the Detour Tour in 2015.
Can do!
Parents: get a job.
Girls: Phil just featured us.
Parents: so proud, knew you would make it.
should check out there cover the Band's Ophelia. part of Megan and Rebecca Lovell and there tip of the hat series.
so great harmonies and slide guitar from the Lovell sisters
Their cover of Ophelia is awesome....agreed!

Thanks for introducing me to new artists. They are very talented.
They have the call-response thing going in the end of one of my personal favorit live videos with the ladies: th-cam.com/video/YpDYVx7bB1k/w-d-xo.html
What about an analysis of First Aid Kit covering America by Simon and Garfunkel,so good.
I second this First Aid Kit request but prefer their War Pigs (Black Sabbath cover): th-cam.com/video/xXRcDERfnZE/w-d-xo.html
Larkin Poe are rapidly becoming one of my favourite bands.

Love these two ladies. Real deal. And i love their style and tone.
Never heard of them but you learn something new every day. I like this one better than the Dolly or Mileys' version . Good analysis ,Fil .😎
Larkin Poe are amazing Blues players
I have known about these girls for a while now. I believe this is part of their tip of the hat series (as the playlist is called) they're a breath of fresh air in the modern music world.
Awesome review! Have you checked out little wing live at hard rock cafe by Alex Kilroy? Aka Alex Musat. The guy is unreal!
I would be very happy, if you would check out one of their live performances with a full band setup, one of the best on TH-cam is their appearance on the Spring Leaf Festival (an independant one), you can choose any of their songs there, they have it all: great musicianship, great songwriting, great interaction with the audience, great performance, enthusiastic playing, superb vocals:

Thanks again, also for your discipline and steadyness of producing such competent and insightful videos on such a regular basis! Extra thumbs up!!
Never heard of them...I will check t them out!...👍😁.Thanks Fil!...✌❤🤘
POWERFUL VOICES!
Sublime vocals, and beautifully in sync. Their cover of 'Cocaine' is just as good.
I’d love to hear your critique of Danni Rabin from Marbin .. a jazz Fusion band who tours the USA....

@@loripond1839 You're welcome! Enjoy!!
Nice acoustics wherever they are. It’s like an a cappella performance. 👏🏽
