All 5 of my eastern Herman's survived a couple of nights at 7 degrees this past winter. I have 2 females that are well over 15 yrs old and they are huge. Over 10 inches long and 8 inches wide. I got them from my nephew who raised them both from hatchling.

Couple months ago I began caring for a Mojave Desert Tortoise as part of a legal rescue. Just started building a burrow outside for him, he likes a lot of room to roam around. I’ll be planting native plants for him, but right now he’s very picky eating dandelion greens. Having a hard time getting him to eat anything else.
Western Hermann's are definitely on my list for a dream species to keep to increase their captive numbers and keep the bloodlines pure. Hopefully I can find a sweet deal on some soon.
I'm watching this wearing my purple Reptile Army hoodie 😁 I have a pair of Russians, but these guys are super cool too. I can't believe they are endangered! I hope enough people are breeding them. Great video! I learned a lot.
I love the education and information you give. Thank you for caring so much about the welfare of the animals kept as pets. Your videos could save someone a lot of stress or an animal's life by helping people determine what is best for their lifestyle. I worked at a pets store years ago and it could be so disappointing at times. I'm so glad there are more resources available for reptiles now.
What would you say is the farthest north in the US that you'd be able to have the Western Herman's Tortoise outside in the winter? For example, would it be possible for someone in central NY to keep them outside and are any kind of modifications needed? For example would you need a deeper burrowing area with a certain kind of substrate? That being said, what is a suitable substrate for them to burrow into to brumate? The ground in certain areas tends to be more clay based which I would assume is not ideal.
Completely agree, I absolutely love western Hermann’s. So full of character, so inquisitive, complete lemmings and their shells are so beautiful especially their keyhole scutes. My Pebble is hilarious and always up to mischief, he acts very much Otis - he loves chasing me around like a puppy. 🤗🐢🤗 I love the #brianstrong tshirt 👌🏻

Thanks. I might be looking to get one of these beautiful tortoises. We keep a Sonoran desert tortoise about a month in the summers for the desert botanical garden. I love him, his name is blue and he is delightful. But he takes the whole yard and does get into mischief. And he is an escape artist. If I could create him a pen from one of my garden beds that would be much easier on me, lol.
I think testudo in general is the best, if only for their size and hardiness once they get past that hatchling stage. In general I'd say you get the giant tortoise attitude in a smaller package
