    I grew up a muscle car guy. I bought a 74 Datsun 260Z while I was in the military. I'm 6'2" and thought I wouldn't fit the car. Got in and put the seat all the way back and couldn't depress the clutch petal all the way down. This car showed me it was just as much fun going around curves as going fast in a straight line. Out of all the cars I've owned over the years. This is the one I wish I could have back.

    126hp at the wheels is pretty spot on for a stock 280Z. They were rated at 149hp SAE net. I'd say getting it to around 190-200 rear wheel horsepower would make it super fun, super usable and very reliable while maintaining it's original appearance(keeping it's value factor high IMO). The more reversible mods performed, the less it permanently hurts it's overall collectability.

    • @SolamenteVees
      @SolamenteVees 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      126 wheel hp is almost exactly 149 SAE net. Really impressive. (not to mention some loss in the fluid link/auto trans)

    • @FixingWithFriends
      @FixingWithFriends 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the enghine hasn't been overhauled that means it has very little power loss (assuming it wasn't above the rated power to start with).

    I still have my 77 (same color) that I bought brand new. It now has a 3.2 stroker (same original block and head) dynoed at 245 hp and 273 ft/lbs torque. And yes, it is an absolute hoot to drive.

      @FixingWithFriends 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you mean deceptively slow. lol
      At the time they would have been pretty competitive, and the barebones construction makes it feel a lot more involved, but you hop in a hyundai accent and the new car is going to win off the line. I am not bashing on it, but let's be realistic here people look at it and see 'Jaguar like', or 'fast car', but it's performance is only (or less than) that of a commuter car these days.

    Just went out to the car to smoke a bowl, and this lil jem popped up. My first car was a 78 280z 2 seater. L28 with fuel injection, and a 5 speed. Loved that car so much, I bought another 280, then a 240, then a 510, then a roadster,and so on. So, to say the least, I'm a Datsun fan. I cant wait to see this thing transform. Definitely a fan of ditching the bumpers. One thing to consider. The 68 and 69 Datsun 510 had a small rear marker light that is about an inch or so in diameter, and a front arrowhead shaped marker light that I always thought would look good on a z. Would take some metal work, but doable. Just a thought. Thanks for the video

    Those L28's are known for being pretty stout motors. I think it'd be really cool to see a triple dual draft carburetor setup, or maybe a custom six carburetor setup, with one carburetor per cylinder.

      I don't know many people do that because it seems simpler than a FI update. FI gives you a better result, but If they go for ITBs with that you still get the cooler look.

    My sister's bf had a 240Z in high school, but he granny shifted constantly and it started running rough, so he asked me to check it out.
    I knew what it needed, so took it out for a "highway tune-up" keeping the rpm's up as much as possible.
    Cleared out the carbon and he was estatic.
    Told him I simply tweaked the timing a little was all 😆.

    Those L28 motors are legendary, ole school fellas would strap on a set of Webers and go racing, the sound is intoxicating but with today’s modern tech you can run it with with either ITB’s or retain the stock EFI intake and run a standalone with great results, refresh the motor, port the head, a big cam, a header and boom you have a winner!

    I clearly remember the introduction of the 240Z and it was a proverbial game changer. It is unfortunate that its predecessor the roadster faded into the background.
    Since the smog tuning in those years so strangled the engines just proper tuning for power and efficiency should pay huge dividends

    I bought a 1978 Datsun 280Z with a 5 Speed new in 78. It was a dark metallic blue with white interior. Red line on the tech is 6400. It would do 45 in 1st, 60 in 2nd, 115 in 3rd, 150 in 4th, and I never red lined it in 5th. I put larger tires and wheels on it and that totally messed up it's handling and steering, went back to normal size which made it steer and handle much better.

    Might I suggest a "Devil Z" themed build inspired by the popular racing anime "Wangan Midnight"? Tuners in Japan can wring over 250hp (naturally aspirated) out of these L series engines, with side draft Mikuni or Weber carbs and with turbos 400 isn't unreasonable.
