The PhD component of MD,PhD is totally dependent upon the kind of research adviser you get the project you're assigned. Hence if you get a bad adviser you're screwed and the PhD might take longer than 4 yrs
Thank you, thank you! I didn't even know this was an option, so as someone with conflicting aspirations for an M.D. vs a Ph.D. it opens up a whole world of possibilities I didn't know existed!
Andrea, your videos have made me love and look forward to Mondays now! Thank you so much for the awesome work you're doing on this channel. You're motivating a lot of people and channeling excellent advice at the same time. Keep it up please!
Hi Andrea, there is a new medical school opening through Washington State University where instead of doing 2 years of study and then 2 years of clinicals, you actually start clinicals your third week! They are trying to adapt a holistic approach where students focus primarily on their own health, family and then school. So it is only open to WA state residents. You don't move!
Hi Andrea! Your past two videos on Post Bacc and MD/PhD have been a huge blessing to me. I am a Nutrition major and want to study medicine...but have been really torn between medicine and research. This video has helped me figure out my options. Also, I have been struggling trying to figure out how I can get my med pre-requs done. The post bacc video answered my question! (I graduate in May.. so its too late to work on pre-reqs in the midst of my undergrad) Thank you so much for being such an inspiring mentor. I have been watching your videos ever since I started thinking I was interested in medicine.
Thanks for this video! I have been thinking about researching neuro/brain type things while in Medical school, specifically at Texas A & M. I'm thinking about going there for undergrad and med school, and this video really helped me know what's expected somewhat. So thank you Dr. Tooley and Dr Roddy! :)
I was wondering if you could post a video on how you paid for medical school? I'm currently a Pre-med and I'm having issues with how I would be able to afford it.
could you maybe interview a md/PhD who is older and has been doing it for longer. they have already finished their residency and fellowship?? i feel like they might have even better advice
I was wondering if you could do a video about doctors without borders or Americans doing international medicine. It's really my dream but I don't know how to go about it.
hi andrea!! In one of your old videos - i remember you talking briefly about how you were in a sorority in College. I was hoping you could elaborate on your experience of being in a sorority and being a pre-med!
This was really helpful, thank you so much! In your opinion, if you were to get your MD and PhD separately (i.e. not a straight MD-PhD program), which would be more advisable: med school first or graduate school?
I am wondering if you can do an MD/PhD in neuro oncology. I really love neurology and oncology. Basically my question is if their is a program of getting your MD in Neuro surgery with a PhD in oncology. And my goal is to become a pediatrics neuro-oncology surgeon.
Love all your videos ! I was wondering if you could interview an anesthesiologist? I am really interested in the specialty and would love to hear about what residency was like for them and their views on the outlook of the specialty. A lot of people are saying the nurse anesthetist are kind of taking over the field because in some states they do not need the supervision of an anesthesiologist.
I am curious if the PhD/MD path is more flexible than the MD only. I'd also love to see you interview someone with a chronic illness or disability who is or has made medical school (or PhD/MD) work. I personally deal with a neurological condition which at times makes anything I do more difficult. As as psychologist, I want to make a career change. Due to the several years investment that is involved and my age of 37, I want to get started ASAP even though I expected to have major surgery before I would complete my program. Do you have any stories (interviews) to share of people who took time off in the middle of their program? What is the best time to take time off for a personal surgery? What is the reality of how less than perfectly healthy people are perceived in the whole process? Thanks for answering any of these questions!!
Hi Andrea. Were you ever shy before med school? I don't know how to overcome my shyness when talking to people/ meeting people and patients. It's really bothering me.
Volunteer at a clinic where you would talk to patients & caregivers in the waiting room. Even outgoing volunteers get nervous in the beginning. The practice will take care of it all.
Hi Andrea! I was wondering if you knew anyone that did a MD/JD program? Would love to see an interview of a MD/JD graduate and a emergency medicine physician!
Hey Andrea. First of all I would like to thank you for being so supportive and answering everyone's questions. Today my question is that On average how many hours will a cardiothoracic surgery resident and a nuerosurgery resident work in a week. And do they get Saturday and Sundays Off
+Asim Sohail The max that you are allowed to work each week is 80, although I think many programs go over that. I think that you can expect to probably work at least 60-80 hours a week. You are required to have 1 day off in 7 days, averaged over 4 weeks, but those days off aren't always Saturdays or Sundays.
Hi Andrea, thank you for consistently bringing supportive and informative videos weekly! For prospective med-school students, your channel has been a great resource for insight! My question is can you still become a Clinical Investigator (i.e. a doctor who spends 50/50 in clinic and research or 75% research and 25%clinician) with a Master's degree only?
+Rose Ennin Do you mean masters degree as well as your MD? You have to have a medical degree to see patients in clinic, but you can definitely do research and run a lab without a PhD
+Andrea Tooley yes, so doing a Masters either before your MD or after. Ok great. And also, if you wanted to practice medicine on a global health scale, would a PhD also lend itself favourably to that? I know many combined MD/PhD programs tend to be more biomedical or lab focused
+35summerlove LOL I love this question! I am currently obsessed with the Tanzania coffee from Dunn Brothers. We get it freshly roasted. I also love peace coffee which you can find at whole foods/health food stores. Kyle and I use an Aeropress to make our coffee every morning and love it!
Heres the thing, These programs are so competitive what is it 2% acceptance rate?, I'm scared no one will take me. Also its not easy to decide because the MD/PhD requires the MCAT and a grad school requires the GRE so studying wise you have to make the decision quickly. its kind of discouraging.
thanks alot for this vid...but its late for tht...m already a M.D... so here i wanted to ask how research will go along residency....n how u think it should be like?? or wtz better way??
I was wondering if you would interview a nurses aid. Being that October is breast cancer awareness month, I really want to shed some light on ectopic expression and herceptin. Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 is a receptor tyrosine kinase that is expressed throughout the body. Many off target hits. That is not ectopic expression. I truly believe that cancer can be viewed as Mendelian. Meaning it's only expressed in this area of the body or on cancer cells. Such the case of Kv10.1 and HLA-G. These can be targeted with monoclonal antibodies. And it's shameful that there isn't much research into it. And yes, I am a nurses aid.
Hi! I am finishing next year with my MD program and although I love medicine and medical practice, I am also strongly interested in research. I am considering to apply for a PhD program before my surgical residency. How possible would be for an MD graduate to find a paid position in a PhD program? Would it be crucial for someone to obtain a masters after MD and before PhD? How negative or positive would be seen as a candidate during the application process someone who spent 6 years in a PhD before applying to residency? Thank you for your time!
If you wanted to get an MD/PhD, could you decide after getting the degrees that you don't want to have to see patients and really just one to research and are there benefits to the research aspect by having the MD degree as well? I love research labs and I know the research is for me, but I'm not sure if the commitment to other people (patients) is for me.
Abraham Rivera MD/PhD programs are typically free due to the PhD portion. So you usually get a stipend while in school. Tradeoff is the 6-8 year commitment.
I cant speak for every school, ywt it seems to be the case that, for MD, mnimum gpa=< or equal to 3.0 whilst MD-PHD= < or equal to 3.5gpa. So I suspect a 3.5gpa is desired at the minimum for an mdphd but at the same time they may not have an exact gpa in all cases. But I ak not an admission officer, so correct me if I am wrong.
This is great. I enjoy your videos. I am a first year med student. I am thinking about urology. Can you interview a urologist ? Find out the pros and cons of urology residency and after ? how to match well ? and Board score ? thanks
thanks for the great insight on PhD i am an international medical graduate, my goals is to get into neurosurgery residency program , i did apply for PhD in neuroscience and i have an interview soon my question is how can I convince the graduate committee that I will complete the whole 4 year program thats is the hardest question for me
hello, i was just wondering how do you become a med school professor? do u do this md/ phd program or ? and what if u want to be a professor that teaches in a med school but still see some patients at a hospital ?
Hey Andrea! I have a question about research, my school offers undergrad research assistant positions in a couple of fields but I recently found a lab from a different school (a medical school) that offers the type of research I'd love to be involved in. Do you think it's worth it for me to try to reach out to the professor running the research? Or are those types of research labs exclusive to medical students?
so I am thinking about going into medical school however I am not sure if I want to go to medical school directly after college. because of that I wanted to ask you if it may be harder to get into medical schools or residency programs at an older age... like say mid 30s? by the way can you do an interview with a doctor with prior military experience? thank you, I love your videos, definitely subscribing.
I recommend you going to medical school earlier because medical school plus a residency is many, many years! But, if it's a financial or emotional problem take as many years as you want. I hope this helped. 😊
no you can choose a pediatric speciality, plastic surgery, general surgery, neurology, neural surgery... you don't cover all these specialties in a class you are taught.... the class times in medical school(which are typically the first two years) cover mainly broad whole body systems and how they were together.. then you last two years is the rotation years where you go through different speciality rotations to kind of get a feel for which speciality you might want to do. then after graduating you do a intern you, then residency, and then a fellowship if you want to do further research
Hey Andrea...I am always looking forward to Monday for this awesome videos...I am a 26 year old single mom.. I am thinking of going back to school to finish my finance degree been out of school for 3 yrs only have one seem left to finish but after having my daughter and going through the process of child birth I wanna become a ObGyn... My question is should I complete my degree then go to post baccalaureate school or get the prerequisite...also I don't have great grades now what do you advice...thanks
+Life as Risper I don't think that going back to school to finish your finance degree would be necessary, but if you don't have a 4 year degree and that's the easiest way to get one, then go for it! You will just need to take all your pre-recs along with your remaining finance classes. That might be faster than a post-bacc, but might be harder! Either way will be challenging but you can do it!
Hi Andrea I'm Christina and I'm only 14 almost 15 and I was wondering if you thought that it's to early for me to be planning colleges and career moves, how old you were when you decided to do med, and is it a good idea to volunteer at a hospital
hey girl! definitely not too early!!! don't be too worried about it though since you are still in high school but it is a good idea to maybe start thinking about which undergrad school you want to go to.. but mainly focus on doing good in high school classes and being involved on your school campus whether volunteering, in a club or sports because extracurriculars like that look good on college application
yes. you can finish medical school but choose to not become a doctor. Getting an MD means you are now a scientist. you can either choose to become a medical doctor and see patients or become secluded at labs and peruse your research and discover the dark twisted abyss of your mind and wonder why you didint choose biochemistry.

She's really a great interviewer I got almost all my questions a new answered
I couldn't stop laughing when he said his name in 3rd person in the beginning LOL! Great video!

Oh my god you are a life saver! So glad I found this channel as a freshman pre-med :)
How are you nowadays?
thank you for this, Andrea! he was so nice to listen to esp for someone doing a masters and aiming for an MD..!
I was wondering if you could do a video about doctors without borders or Americans doing international medicine. It's really my dream but I don't know how to go about it.
+Angelique Jennings YES PLEASE ANDREA
Angelique Jennings DWB would be good
Thanks for doing this interview. It's a great perspective to share.
I really value your insight. It's very appreciated.
hi andrea!!
In one of your old videos - i remember you talking briefly about how you were in a sorority in College.
I was hoping you could elaborate on your experience of being in a sorority and being a pre-med!
Am pleased to have seen this , however i would be happy to see the views of an IMG who has had the experience on the course thanks
A doctor's doctor. Respect.
Amazing interviewer and interviewee. No wonder they are so smart 🙂 thank you for the detailed discussion.
Hey Dr. Tooley, can you do an interview with a D.O physician? Love your video BTW :)
This is my Dr. He’s a great doctor.
Radiologist please! Thank you so much for these videos Andrea!!
niksy me to
Cheers, that was great. Amazing interviewer btw
How could you not have asked him what his PhD was in?!?!
Mary N
Lol ikr?
He said he did research through dental school, idk if that answers your question but it hopefully it helps
This was really helpful, thank you so much! In your opinion, if you were to get your MD and PhD separately (i.e. not a straight MD-PhD program), which would be more advisable: med school first or graduate school?
+heavythinker16 Probably graduate school because it would be hard to go to residency if you had taken 5+ years off to get your PhD :-)
I am wondering if you can do an MD/PhD in neuro oncology. I really love neurology and oncology. Basically my question is if their is a program of getting your MD in Neuro surgery with a PhD in oncology. And my goal is to become a pediatrics neuro-oncology surgeon.

MD/JD is a waste of time tbh

Incredible video!
cous i havent seen anything on how to become a med school professor anywhere

I feel the same exact way. Im so confused right now
Sorry did you say school was essentially "free"?
Abraham Rivera MD/PhD programs are typically free due to the PhD portion. So you usually get a stipend while in school. Tradeoff is the 6-8 year commitment.
That’s true for any Ph.D program in STEM.

No- you can apply with just a bachelors

Could you do a video on how to chose the right specialty for you? And how to know you picked the right choice... Thanks!!
Hey Andrea....I was wondering whether this 60-80 hr work week is same for neurology and cardiology residency. Thanks Alot!!!
depends on where your residency is at but yes for the big competitive/challenging residencies like those two expect long work weeks
so I am thinking about going into medical school however I am not sure if I want to go to medical school directly after college. because of that I wanted to ask you if it may be harder to get into medical schools or residency programs at an older age... like say mid 30s? by the way can you do an interview with a doctor with prior military experience? thank you, I love your videos, definitely subscribing.

Hey, so when you choose your specialty, does it have to be from one of the categories you are taught at med school?
no you can choose a pediatric speciality, plastic surgery, general surgery, neurology, neural surgery... you don't cover all these specialties in a class you are taught.... the class times in medical school(which are typically the first two years) cover mainly broad whole body systems and how they were together.. then you last two years is the rotation years where you go through different speciality rotations to kind of get a feel for which speciality you might want to do. then after graduating you do a intern you, then residency, and then a fellowship if you want to do further research

yes. you can finish medical school but choose to not become a doctor. interview an oncologist? :P
