I use both Goodnotes and Notability and have done for years. One of the biggest differences which can be a dealbreaker for some of your viewers, especially those using smaller capacity iPads is the difference in file size. Goodnotes files tend to be 10-20x larger than Notability which can result in you filling up your IPad if you make a lot of notes. Especially if you have a 32/64GB model. I believe this is because Notability has a vector description of the page whereas Goodnotes saves it as a raster image. For this reason I default to Notability even though I like a lot of the Goodnotes features as I take so many notes I can’t afford for it to hog that much storage. You can google and many have done comparisons on file size between the two.
Great genius at Apple goes hand in hand with unthinkable stupidity. First they churn out a machine(like ipad pro) that would not have a problem handling 3 OS-es with all their apps in the same time . Then they put in it so much storage as the ancient computers had circa 2000. I mean , what ....... Apart from the fact that these apps may be inefficient in their storage handling, the ipad and every computer in these days should have orders of magnitude larger storage than what we would need(because of bad apps) at the same price, because this is the natural evolution of silicon. Artificially limiting RAM and permanent storage to squeeze just a bit of a dollar more is lame. Even tablets should get out of the factory with minimum 1 tb of storage and 16 gb of RAM(and memory slots for redundancy). Desktops and laptops should have triple that as minimum.
@@dry509 I do not recommend sth different than already there. I am just saying storage space should not be our problem. Yet here we are on 2022 being troubled whether our personal computing device would handle a few notes more.
Going paperless for work simplified so much of my life, and I wish it had been an option when I was a student. I upgraded to the iPad Air 4 last year, and I agree that you don't need the Pro if you're not a content creator. My iPad is my primary device, so I also use it for streaming shows/twitch and even gaming without any performance issues. The screen is big enough to comfortably work in split screen mode if you want to have your preferred note taking app open while you're writing, which is what I typically do with Scrivner and Goodnotes. However, I would say that if you're not planning on primarily typing to take notes, a normal case and a separate bluetooth keyboard is a far better user experience than a case with a keyboard. It offers more flexibility and opens up additional options for a keyboard suited to your preferences and needs.
I got the iPad pro for medical school. Personally, it depends on need what you need to buy. I used the 11-inch and it was okay but then upgraded to 12.9-inch. I needed the larger screen because I did a lot of split-screen work using books and my not apps. For medical students, the Pro is probably best because we watch a lot of videos and do quite a lot of video work and also work with flashcards and VERY LARGE textbooks and the larger processing was more comfortable as was the larger screen. The Air would be easier on the budget and almost as good, but it is size restricted. The paperlike screen protector is amazing and a must. I use notability and goodnotes for notes, notability for school, and good notes for my own notes. I prefer Notability for note-taking, My organization was fairly easy because I use it like I did my binder in school. Some people prefer printed textbooks but most schools give the PDF textbook and it's easier to take them around because they are HUGE and heavy and expensive. Even the files are huge digitally so I had to have the larger 1TB where I used to use the smaller 64GB because anything smaller that 256 or 512 is too small with the large volume of notes and

I’m working on my Masters in History on line while working 45 hours a week as a litigation Paralegal. I also did not major in history for undergrad, I was a Sociology and Political Science major. It has been a challenge learning to study history mostly because of the enormous amount of reading required. I study every evening for 4 hours and all day on weekends. Our discussions are done via video and I also find it challenging to find materials that are only available at my university’s library ( we have a lot available on line but not everything) my school is in VA and I’m in TEXAS so I have really had to learn how to access online archives through Oxford and library of Congress. I don’t recommend doing a masters online if you can go in person. I’d love to hear about your file organization for your course work. I only have 3 semesters of coursework before my prospectus. Hi. Thanks for the video. Just to let you know that a lot of us find an informational video like this especially hard to listen to when there is repetitive music in the background. Hard to listen to and anxiety producing. Just an fyi. I do appreciate your video. Thanks! 😊

Your comparison of the note-taking apps Goodnotes and Notability was clear and useful. Also useful was your approach to the different types of notes that you take. I found it difficult, however, to remain focused on your comments due to the distracting music. This was particularly noticeable in the Goodnotes vs. Notability clips. When you used a voice-over for the Notability segment, and your words were a bit easier to follow, compared to the preceding Goodnotes segment. Maybe the music volume level in this segment was lower, or perhaps you used a different microphone, mic placement or acoustic setting for the voice-over audio. My advice would be to avoid music in an instructional video of this type, or at least confine the background music to limited parts of the video that do not require the viewer's intense focus. Overall good video, but please dial down or eliminate the music.
would love to see a future video on all of the apps you have on your ipad!! i was just admitted to phd programs for fall 2022 and i am straight out of my bachelors so i am anxiously binging your videoes to prepare for the life of a phd student.

Paper like isn't a good screen protector. Many reviews have said that it does long term damage to the pencil and that there are cheaper alternatives that feel better when writing. Keep in mind this video is sponsored so watch other reviews about the product before you buy
I personally love it and just replace the tip of my pencil every six months or so. This was an ideal partnership for my channel because I genuinely love and use the product and have for the last two years
I study with summaries written by me and this usually takes around 30 written pages. I want to start using my ipad for this specifically, however i feel unsure that it will give me the same feel that paper gives me. I normally pace around while studying a subject with all my papers in hand, so when it come to an ipad I feel like the “feel” of studying won’t really cut it. I don’t know if this makes sense, hopefully it does.
Guys, which iPad do you recommend for crafts, such as taking notes on crochet patterns, writing patterns and say, taking a screen shot of s written pattern & being able to highlight text? Thanks
OK. Very insightful. When I tried to read and take notes on my tablet, the problem I faced was not having both the article and notes open at the same time. I found it difficult to go back and forth between apps to read and write. How do you do it?
@@KaelynGraceApple That would kill my eyes. I think I found a solution. After I annotate on the tablet, open it on the laptop and take notes on the tablet from the laptop. I'll give it a try next semester.
Also a phd student but in English. I bought an iPad and pencil to do all that you mentioned. However I couldn’t make the transition from a standard notebook and pencil to iPad. I think maybe the screen protector is what’s missing. Does it affect the view, as in does it dull the image if I wanted to watch videos?
I've been curious about note-taking techniques on a mobile device for some time. I take old-fashioned business-meeting notes (to be converted into meeting minutes) for work that I do. Doing this in a meeting setting with binder-filler paper and a mechanical pencil works for me, but I hate having to take what I've already written down in notes and then work in front of a computer later to type it out in MS Word for draft meeting minutes. I've been thinking about getting a late-model iPad (possibly an iPad Mini) and streamlining my meeting notes->minutes process. I was thinking that taking an iPad Mini with me to remote locations for on-site project meetings would be handy, as I could snap photos with the Mini while also taking notes standing up. Are Goodnotes and Notability strictly cloud-based? The reason I ask is because if I'm on-site in my rural area there may not be cellular signal readily available and I wanted to know if these apps could still take notes in isolation.
Someone mentioned that Goodnotes takes a lot more storage than Notability (just wanted to mention that since the base option is 64gb) so I say just keep that in mind. Other than that you can also purchase the cellular version of the iPad Mini, although it is only necessary depending on your use case and also of course cellular data is not as reliable as wifi.
I love your content so much. Does Goodnotes link with your Notion somehow? How do you store/organize your pdfs for compatibility between desktop and iPad?
I’m a 2nd year CJ PhD student and this video was incredibly helpful! Do you annotate PDFs then write your article notes, or do you annotate and write notes simultaneously?
Love this! I have been straddling the fence on taking notes with my iPad, so I am going to try this! Oh I have been meaning to ask you where did you get your gold spiral notebook?
@@KaelynGraceApple also, I implemented many of your tips from this video, they helped immensely in my research and writing process! I re-watched because I'm planning to use Notion when I start law school in August.
HI TH-camrs, I was wondering what are the advantages of Goodnotes vs the new Apple notes? Also, mindful if Goodnotes upgrade if this could cause problems in accessing old data. I'm currently studying masters. Looking to create a lifetime library of resources including journal articles I can save as PDF's etc after I get kicked off my academic institutions resources when I graduate. Considering a whole bunch of things including Medalay but I like the interactiveness of the Ipad.
Hi, I just wondered why you take notes on iPad when reading an article but on Notion when reading a book? Do you also type out or summarize on Notion what you have on your GoodNotes?
Which case brand are you using for your iPad pro? I was checking Amazon for one like yours but couldn’t find one that matched what you had. That marble aesthetic is fantastic
Looks good, but you never came across Liquidtext, MarginNote or Altas Ti for multiple paper management and linking of the huge amount of scientific research you have to process for your PhD? If you ever plan to do so, skip Liquidtext as it is too expensive for what it can do. I would go for MarginNote instead as long as it is not top secret (government) stuff you are working with (It is Chinese)... Atlas Ti is maybe a bit too massive and complex and the most "expensive" subscription offer. I just used it for one project, but pretty quickly dropped it as I got "lost" with all my papers....
Apart from the lack of an undo function and being easy to delete whole blocks of text & not being able to save on the fly & obviously unable to utilise other document file types, apples default ‘Notes’ app is okay.
Would you still recommend that screen size compared to getting a iPad mini 6? I would mainly use it for reading articles etc (also a history Phd candidate)
hello! I like this video and has some good tips in it. However, the music is very distracting to listen to what you are saying... maybe just have the volume down a little on the music for future videos
what is the difference between seminar and lecture? from your video it seems seminars are more participatory where as lecture you are less of an active participant?
What about pdfs? When you write on pdfs, does it make pdf large file size? Does it make lag on pdf scrolling and writing if pdf file have more than 500 pages an large file size?
Now I'm really regretting going with a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 over the iPad. Note taking is... difficult, to say the least. And the tips for the S pen just keep breaking. Aesthetically pleasing note taking apps also basically do not exist. Hopefully I can pay it off and get my an iPad Pro instead come tax season. It'll be so much easier for notes.

My advice would be to avoid music in an instructional video of this type, or at least confine the background music to limited parts of the video that do not require the viewer's intense focus. Overall good video, but please dial down or eliminate the music.
Thanks so much for the constructive and kind feedback!! I will definitely keep this in mind when editing in the future!!!
I agree. I didn’t see this post before I made mine but I find the same distraction. Thanks for replying to the og poster. 😊
would love to see a future video on all of the apps you have on your ipad!! i was just admitted to phd programs for fall 2022 and i am straight out of my bachelors so i am anxiously binging your videoes to prepare for the life of a phd student.
Thank you so much for this video! I am starting my master's program in healthcare administration next month and I now have an idea on how to organize my notes on my ipad :)
Completed my majors recently now will be getting into Masters next month or so this time I’ll use my iPad rather than pen n paper.
Love the mindmap idea, thanks for this video!
Thank you for your video! This is so informative and insightful. Your handwriting is very beautiful, even on ipad.
Thank you!
Excellent video! So helpful. I really appreciate all the great examples and suggestions you provided. Thank you. 🙏
I use the side by side feature on the ipad
@@KaelynGraceApple That would kill my eyes. I think I found a solution. After I annotate on the tablet, open it on the laptop and take notes on the tablet from the laptop. I'll give it a try next semester.
@@KaelynGraceApple Update! I went out today and got a Samsung Tab 7FE. I'm going to make an effort to go as digital as I can for this second year.
The music behind this video is very distracting
really helped a great deal. about to start my Ph.D. program in 2 weeks so I'm a bit nervous. but this video helped a lot
It does by a bit but it doesn’t bother me :)
You don’t need to be connected to Wi-Fi to use Goodnotes or notability but you do in order for the files to sync between devices
Just curious as to what your dissertation topic is…
I learned so much overall. Very informative Great Job!!
I love your content so much. Does Goodnotes link with your Notion somehow? How do you store/organize your pdfs for compatibility between desktop and iPad?
Unfortunately not. I just use them separately
I’m a 2nd year CJ PhD student and this video was incredibly helpful! Do you annotate PDFs then write your article notes, or do you annotate and write notes simultaneously?
I tend to read first and take notes after
Love this! I have been straddling the fence on taking notes with my iPad, so I am going to try this! Oh I have been meaning to ask you where did you get your gold spiral notebook?
It’s from golden coil!
@@KaelynGraceApple thank you!
Great video! I'm curious about your highlighting code system. Can you share your color scheme/key?
My senior thesis advisor is Stephanie Jones-Rogers! She’s absolutely amazing!
I am dying for her to publish her upcoming project on matrilineal descent
@@KaelynGraceApple I am as well, she's an excellent writer.
@@KaelynGraceApple also, I implemented many of your tips from this video, they helped immensely in my research and writing process! I re-watched because I'm planning to use Notion when I start law school in August.
this is a fantastic set of tips! Any thoughts on using iPad for in-person class?
I used mine to in person lectures/seminars!
Do the 2 apps you use have good/any backup options? (Like, my Notability notes get backed up to Google drive frequently…)
finally just invested in an ipad 11 pro! got the pencil too!
I personally use a combination of Goodnotes, Notion, and Zotero
Hi, I just wondered why you take notes on iPad when reading an article but on Notion when reading a book? Do you also type out or summarize on Notion what you have on your GoodNotes?
I type my annotations from the book and articles in notion!
@@KaelynGraceApple I see! Thank you for your reply!😊
Which case brand are you using for your iPad pro? I was checking Amazon for one like yours but couldn’t find one that matched what you had. That marble aesthetic is fantastic
I bought it over three years ago on amazon in the UK so not quite sure where to find it again 😅
Hi! Any advice on what apps or where to go for help when checking grammar on essays, dissertation, long writing pieces? :)
Thank you❤️
I used to use grammarly!
recommend by utube. not going to school. feel like PhD Student already.
i know why. bcuz i watching advance music theory.
Nice to see a note taking review from someone other than a science student.🤓
I might've missed this in the video, but did you add the article to one of the notetaking apps? Or where are you annotating it? Thanks so much
Looks good, but you never came across Liquidtext, MarginNote or Altas Ti for multiple paper management and linking of the huge amount of scientific research you have to process for your PhD? If you ever plan to do so, skip Liquidtext as it is too expensive for what it can do. I would go for MarginNote instead as long as it is not top secret (government) stuff you are working with (It is Chinese)... Atlas Ti is maybe a bit too massive and complex and the most "expensive" subscription offer. I just used it for one project, but pretty quickly dropped it as I got "lost" with all my papers....
Great video! Have you used or tried Nebo? Thanks. I’m using an iPad Air 4 for work.
Okay I have question? What do you think about the apple notes app vs the one that you recommended.I love the video much appreciated!
Apart from the lack of an undo function and being easy to delete whole blocks of text & not being able to save on the fly & obviously unable to utilise other document file types, apples default ‘Notes’ app is okay.
Do you think the new Mini IPad is to small for note taking?
Goodnotes 7? Strange, Goodnotes 5 is the latest version, isn't it?
I use good notes and wish I could add or even better it recognises hyperlinks. Unless it does and I’m doing it wrong
Good luck with your studies 💙
Thank you ♥️
Do you still use any physical notebook like even one notebook? or only this iPad to uni?
I use a physical notebook for my ideas and business related concepts but only use my iPad for school
Would you still recommend that screen size compared to getting a iPad mini 6? I would mainly use it for reading articles etc (also a history Phd candidate)
When I read that you major history, I automatically subscribed bec we have the same major omg finally someone I can relate to. 😍😍😍
Are your eyes blue or gray? They’re really a striking color.
Wait, did it skip the formatting section? From 25:15 to 25:20?
Very helpful video. Liked and subscribed.
hello! I like this video and has some good tips in it. However, the music is very distracting to listen to what you are saying... maybe just have the volume down a little on the music for future videos
Thank you for the constructive feedback!
Archaeology will have some good arguments regarding culture as a term and tool!
Yep!
what is the difference between seminar and lecture? from your video it seems seminars are more participatory where as lecture you are less of an active participant?
Will there be any noise if you write fast with a paperlike screen protector in a library?
I'm going to buy 9th generation... great video
I just bought a 9 as well! I like it so far I'm considering returning to get a different size
Nice Video, Thanks for sharing.
Please make the video about what apps you use to take notes
It’s in this video!
How do you get good notes 7? I can only found good notes 5 in Apple App Store on my iPad?
What about pdfs? When you write on pdfs, does it make pdf large file size?
Does it make lag on pdf scrolling and writing if pdf file have more than 500 pages an large file size?
I’ve never had an issue with file sizes :) and I have hundreds of articles and books saved
What would you say is the difference between this and an iPad Air in terms of being a student/grad student?
Honestly not much other than processing power, screen size, and weight
Hi thanks for the video, could you please confirm if MS word app is paid or free for Ipad pro? Thanks!
Great video! Thank you!
